The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I haven't seen the QL yet but that kind of thing may have just sold me on the game. I'm not a completionist so I may end up enjoying Reckoning quite a bit. I suppose at this point it all depends on how I feel about the combat and writing.

edit: oh wait... is this a 60 hour game that can't be played in 25 hours? did I misinterpret the comment?

Jeff pointed out that a lot of his playtime was spent on doing side quests, which he doesn't seem to recommend doing unless you really want to, so I guess the game can be cut down a bit.

The combat looks boring as FUCK. You seem to be able to just stunlock all enemies by mashing the attack button as much as possible. I hope the game at least has a harder difficulty setting which doesn't just give enemies more health for you to churn your way through.

Edit: Also, blue dudes with troll doll style haircuts look stupid.

He recommends doing mostly main quest line and the "second tier" of quest lines and not spend as much time trying to complete tertiary and lesser important quests.

It's a game you can easily spend 100+ hours on, but doing so has the side effect of highlighting the repetition in the combat and delving into less-than-great quests.

Basically the same problem many previous RPG (lately most notably Skyrim) players have run into in the past.

hmm. OK. so it does seem like it could be a fun, "shorter" RPG.

But all this talk of boring combat... eh, I'll have to watch the QL. might need to play the demo, too (I generally prefer to avoid RPG demos. but since this game is so combat focused it seems important)

That Puddle QL is like shorthand for everything I can't bear about physics-based puzzle games. That moment where you've found the solution and you just can't do it because you have extremely poor control over some unpredictable element seems to be every moment in that entire game. Jesus, I was getting irritated just watching it.

Also, I'm no expert here, but I've seen liquids in real life and they don't look like that.

What? Water doesn't behave like friction-less syrup where you're from?

Yeah, I had to turn it off a few minutes in. I got frustrated with it the first time Ryan couldn't complete a task. There's no reason to subject yourself to that sort of irritation.

Wish Vita wasn't coming out so soon. I could justify buying Darkness 2.

Hell, I still could, but I know the price will drop shortly.

That $20 off right? Odds are the Vita will be $20+ off in a month too - I am not saying an official 3DS-like mega drop, but place are going to reduce it.
You said 'much more', how is $20 much more than $20?

Prices are more fluid on a platform than a game certainly, but there is no 3DS-like price slash coming, no matter how poorly it performs.

Vita will probably drop sooner - and drop much more.

No, because Darkness will wait until the next FPS probably(like Syndicate) and already have a deal. sony already loses money on vitas at 250, so I doubt they could even drop it that quick if they wanted to.

Memory cards might get some deals though

Reckoning looks like a Rare game, awful.

Well it's a good thing it actually isn't awful :D

I don't know what it was about that QL, but both Jeff and Brad seemed like just woke up. Jeff especially seemed to let out an audible sigh before he did pretty much anything or after Brad asked him about anything, despite apparently really liking the game. Weird.

The Darkness seems like a cool game. That QL left some good impressions on me.

Reckoning looks like a Rare game, awful.

Funny you say that. I was playing the demo the other day and my brother said the music sounded just like Viva Piñata.

so I’m watching the Reckoning QL now. looks cool. Probably not cool enough for me to get it at launch because I am still recovering from Skyrim and don’t want to glut on fantasy too much in a few months.

But it looks like a great candidate for a summer Steam sale. The combat looked good to me (snappy seems like the right word) and I like the saturated, colourful look as a change of pace.

I didn't really care about the first darkness, but what I've seen of this quicklook really has me interested in 2. Should I play the first one before playing 2? I'll just wait for a sale on steam, but I would like to look into them.

The Darkness 2 looks pretty interesting (the light stuff seems fun) but six to seven hours just isn't good enough at full price. :(

I didn't mean it looks like an awful game, I mean it looks awful, visually. That same over saturated chunky Rare look.
I think it's more a Blizzard-ish look than anything. And I quite like it.
The models are terrible, so plasticky. All the models look like they've got the same ageless face with random beards and earrings/piercings/tattoos sprinkled on them.

The environments look quite nice, though. Colourful and saturated, but not campy. It's cohesive throughout, which helps a lot.

All these Quick Looks for this week so far have been very entertaining, it seems like something may have changed this week or something...

I remember the city in Jak 2 being pretty much pointless, seeing as the meat of the game took place elsewhere. I might pick up the collection, but to be honest just getting J&D on PSN is looking more tempting... depends on prices, I guess.

The city navigation in Jak 2 looks like it'd become really frustrating after a while with all the NPCs around for you to crash into. The controls look awful too.

the vehicle controls are terrible. on foot sections are fine.

Jak 2 is a terrible game in my book. and the quick look just brought back bad memories playing it.
