The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Walking Dead quick look has possible TellTale version spoilers in it around 9 minute mark, I don't know for sure because I had to skip past it.

Patrick: "Those are Dark moon pieces, right?"
Brad: "I'm not sure... I thought that was the whole point of the game, right?"
Game: "Oh, you're hunting gemstones!"
Patrick: "I don't know what they could be..."
Brad: "Yeah..."

[paraphrased]

At least Brad got it a few rooms later.

I shouldn't watch puzzle game QLs, they're bad for my brain

Goddam Brad and Patrick together is so boring.

And I love pretentious ass Patrick declaring the show is bad like it is fact and then talk about how he doesnt even pay attention to it when he watches it. He can be such a shit-head...

The show definitely isn't great.

The comics are pretty good though, and it's shitty he dismissed them off hand like that.

I fully agree. His flippant dismissal of Kirkman's writing and character development made me think less of Patrick considerably.

Why did he dismiss it? I have not read the comics but I heard a lot of good stuff about them.
if it's because of the Zombie premise than he should know better.

There's a made-for-the-show character that Patrick reckons is a lot more interesting/better written than the characters from the comic, ergo Kirkman sucks.

But that sounds like a hell of a leap.

For the sake of discussion and not misrepresenting his opinion I'm just going to quote what he said in the Quick Look from the 6:36 to 7:45 mark.

Patrick: "I've never read the comics, though or I read like the first anthology. But... I sort of have started developing a theory that Kirkman's - well Robert Kirkman the guy who created the Walking Dead - stumbled upon a really cool concept of like a...serializing a zombie apocalypse... but like, the stuff he is most closely involved in - the comic and the television series - it kinda petered out because they don't have very good characters.

Whereas Telltale, you know, that game is all about the characters. And the characters are extremely well written. And then... I feel like... cuz that's where this lives or dies, right? Like you can only make zombies... zombies are not scary when you're seeing them every week. Or that's a really difficult thing to do, so why try to do it. Instead you try and focus on the characters, the human drama."

Brad: "It can't be about the zombies. The zombies have to be a backdrop, an antagonistic force."

Patrick: "And that's what Telltale's game does wonderfully."

Brad: "Right, and it creates a lot of human drama. I didn't realize that was the opinion of the other Walking Dead stuff."

Given that Kirkman is involved in writing the TV show, who knows. :p

Either way, the TV show vacillates between something watchable and something that deserves to die in a fire like The Killing.

Yeah, Patrick seemed to have an uninformed opinion on the comics. They're actually quite good and the zombies have very little to do with the plot. It's all about the characters, the same way Telltale's game is built. The show on the other hand is a mess.

A shit-head for giving an opinion? And the general consensus is TWD is average at best. Hell, look at the thread on GAF even. Mostly saying how dull the episode was or praising that it was "at least better than last weeks". It's a very hit and miss show. The last couple of episodes have been pure trash.

TWD is a weird show where some episodes can be absolutely brilliant and the week after the episode can be absolute filler and extremely bad. Just depends on whoever is writing the ep I guess. Though it's quite a good sign that the upcoming new showrunner wrote one of the best episodes of the entire series two weeks ago.

Also it was pretty wrong of Patrick to dismiss the comics just because the show handled the comic material wrongly.

Patrick is apparently under the impression that The Walking Dead is the only great thing that Robert Kirkman has ever done.

Hell yes, Invincible is great.

Patrick sucks again. As amazing as Telltale's game is the drama doesn't even come close to what happens in the comics.
The "emotional resonance" of Telltale's game is definitely overrated, I will say that. I enjoy both though, it's really not an either-or situation.

This is one of the sticking points on why I find him insufferable and have drastically slowed down my quicklook watching to avoid hearing him. I find it admirable that he has been widening his videogame pallet and giving things a legitimate shot, but there are so many things he just has a preconceived notion against and he is just naturally absolute speaker who loves his own fucking voice, so even if he has no room to speak on a subject he'll detail against it. This is just another example of that happening.

for some reason this post and your avatar makes me want a Telltale Wire game.

I feel like if they did they the temptation to abuse quotes like "It's all in the game" and the "The game is rigged" would be too much for them. And then the inevitable, "The TV show sucked" from Patrick to top it off.

A young Prop Joe side-story, for some reason, excites me. Omar is too obvious and I don't trust that character in the hands of anybody but Simon.

Uh oh you ran into Omar's trap.

"Listen Omar....:"
  • Give Omar the money
[*]Come at the King. *Courage Insufficient
  • Run
Made it more appropriate.

Alright Ryan you motherfucker. Fuck you, you piece of shit. Fucking cocksucker this is Fucking Rouge Fucking Warrior. Fuck it is. Play this Fucking Bethesda game that came out on Xbox Fucking Three Sixty and Play Motherfucking Station Three. Fucking let's do this!

The lack of QLs is getting to me

I've been catching up on Quick Looks and that ARMA3 one has to be the best of year so far I have to say.

And a Telltale Wire game, I'd pay actual real money for that.

Good Morning, McNulty. What are your plans today?

  • Fuck my own shit up.
  • Fuck up somebody else's shit.
  • Everybody's getting caught in the McNulty shit storm.

"It breaks fiction" is such a bullshit PR excuse for only being able to use characters from that universe in that level when the real reason is almost certainly either "it would be too hard/take too much time or money to get all the characters working in every level" or "the rights holders wouldn't let us".

So those pog like power discs are dlc that are a blind buy like trading cards? That's... that's a new level of evil.

Edit:
Also I gave a shudder when Johnny V said "creative geniuses at Pixar" It's like he had a shock collar attached to him and the PR person off screen had the controller and would push the button unless Johnny said specific key marketing words.

What? The real reason is obviously, "We want to force people to buy all the toys so they can access all the playsets."

It's like they took the idea of Skylanders and made it even more insidious.

That sounds about right.
