The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

It's definitely a good thing. No other game has bothered to explain hit-confirms, pokes, mix-ups to me ever. I've always had to learn that shit from SRK or gaf or something.

But it does suck that it takes a totally different game (well, same mechanics, but you know what I mean) for those explanations to exist in-game. You're right, it's definitely good, it's just crappy that a big reason this game was made was to serve a purpose it needn't have had to serve at all.

I guess it's worth it, because holy crap is it pretty.

Now style-wise, there you might have a point. I can't decide if I like it or not.

They've gone with a style that suits motion, and is poorer for being static. Case in point: the Lesson Select screen is horrid to look at, with that static image of the teacher so big on the screen. But so long as it's animating, it's great to look at.

says you (i'm probably just used to seeing kinuko's art, which has never been animated before this game)

Is this person's art usually this expressive and exaggerated? It seems like it was made to be animated, because of how much is it those things. They picked a good artist for a fighter anyway, ha.

Did you play Shattered Memories? Same artist who did the art for the joke/UFO ending there.

I'd post a link to the old art blog that she, Paul Robertson, and three other artists (at least two of whom also worked on SG, I think) shared and still infrequently update, but it's extremely NSFW.

Skullgirls is like the inverse of SFxT. SFxT is a good looking fighter wrapped in horrible bullshit while Skullgirls is a kinda oogly looking fighter with a lot of smart interface and UI stuff around it.

Except for the movelist thing. That's crazy.

I bet it has something to do with that Namco patent thing they mentioned.

That's something I'd be interested in finding out. You can patent tutorials in fighting games? Harada-san getting good use out of the Battle Lab patent, then.

I've been there before, but I kinda skimmed over anything that wasn't probertson's stuff. I should give it another look!

Are we ever gonna have another Quick Look that doesn't have Brad involved? He's been in virtually every single one since the start of the year, or at least it feels like it. I've really disliked the dude ever since he shitted up the GOTY deliberations with his stupid arguments. Does he have nothing else to do at GB other than be in Quick Looks?

More than just the tutorial. It's the little things like having to hold the start button to pause and "Random Stage" actually randomly selects a stage on rematches.

$5 says you can change the controller config at the character select screen.

That's why the VF4:Evo training mode, which should be above all copied rotely by EVERY Fighter after 2004, cannot be. Sega owns that shit hard. :(

Brad is the glue that keeps the whole damn team together. He keeps those other crazy personalities grounded. Wishing for less Brad is wishing for the end of Giant Bomb as we know it.

Ryan dropping truth bombs about ME3's ending on twitter (like a month late, but whatever)

Also, Brad in the credits for Skullgirls, what?

I'm sort of surprised that there wasn't any "This is objectifying women" and "The fighting game community needs to..." in the Quick Look. Cool, tired of reading that stuff in reviews.

Jeez, 15 minutes of dicking around in a tutorial? Really guys?...

Compelling content.

Pretty good stuff actually, considering fighting games are not known for their tutorial.

More interesting than them just randomly hitting buttons, which was what the actual fighting portion came down to. Though Jeff kind of knew what he was doing.

Hold on... watching them play fighting games is compelling? Jeff knows how to end a chain with a super, but I'm pretty sure Brad is rubbing his face on the buttons. Which is fine for them, but I don't know how someone would find that entertaining to watch. Not exactly a stellar display of mechanics, but never it is. No bear farting moment here (I was kind of hoping they'd freak out a bit over Fortune's head... but it never came off).

Watching tutorials doesn't give you a good idea of what the game is like at all and isn't that the whole point of Quick Looks? I haven't seen much of this game and all they are showing is them trying out combos, great thanks. I don't mind a little bit of it, but it's literally over half the quick look of them going through a tutorial. From an entertainment perspective it's about as compelling as watching paint dry.

It's basically like watching a friend study for a test you don't have to take. I'd prefer if they did that kind of stuff before the quick look started.

When there are plenty of other people not on vacation, going to events, or having kids, I'm sure Brad would be more than happy to sit one out.

It's one of the things that sets the game apart, it deserved some time at least. Fighting games don't really explain that stuff much.

I think Brad is great so nyah.

I was really interested in the tutorial aspect of the game, so I'm glad it's there. I mean, what can you really show off about a fighting game if you don't have competitive-tier skills? From a completely new perspective, the tutorials - a near-unique aspect of the game - is the perfect thing to show off. I would have liked some story mode as well, but fine.

Hell, by comparison I was disappointed in the hitting random buttons section because Mahvel-style games are no fun to watch when nobody really knows what they're doing. There's no sense of competitiveness or even challenge.

The tutorial part of the Quick Look was the most interesting for me. It showed off something unique and cool about the game, and it was definitely better than watching them pick random characters and fight (no offense to them intended, I'd be awful at that game when starting out too).

As an admirer (but not player) of fighting games, that Skullgirls tutorial impressed me. It also cemented my disinterest in buying this game. :[

The problem with tutorials like those is that the things they are teaching you are still so complex when you actually try to put then into practice. Knowing what an option-select is, and being able to effectively know when to use one are two completely different things.

All that stuff that the tutorial was teaching is stuff that you could have found out with about 15 minutes of reading, it's just that the actual barrier to playing those games is putting the stuff into practice, which still requires you to play the game a fucking ton.
