The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Well they said their initial plan was to run Brad through the entire tutorial and see if he knew anything when he came out, but that was clearly infeasible.

The problem with tutorials like those is that the things they are teaching you are still so complex when you actually try to put then into practice. Knowing what an option-select is, and being able to effectively know when to use one are two completely different things.

All that stuff that the tutorial was teaching is stuff that you could have found out with about 15 minutes of reading, it's just that the actual barrier to playing those games is putting the stuff into practice, which still requires you to play the game a fucking ton.

True, but it's a start. I think Skullgirls is fucking awesome in that regard. Street Fighter has never been that inviting to new players/outsiders.

I'm sort of surprised that there wasn't any "This is objectifying women" and "The fighting game community needs to..." in the Quick Look. Cool, tired of reading that stuff in reviews.

Any review of skullgirls that didn't mention the creepy hentaiish childesque character models would be disingenuous at best.

God forbid someone wants to play a fighting game without the game looking like an intro to a cartoon porno.

Then both you and the people you hang out with have very, very broad definitions of "cartoon porno".

Yup. Its the reviewers job to address potential issues with the appeal of the game to a broader audience. Not mentioning it would just make something biased. It's the games biggest issue on the market.

I wouldn't go that far, but it isn't my forte either.

I think it looks fine, I didn't get a chub or anything either.

I really think Skullgirls would look better if the sprites stayed the size they are on the char select screen. They look awkward and shitty at "full size."

Also, give it a fucking rest with the "BUT OTHER FIGHTING GAMES HAVE BAREASS LADIES!" Yeah, they do. You know what else they have? Characters that aren't bare-ass weeaboo ladies.

watching someone play a tutorial is not good. should've just jumped straight in.

I'm glad they showed it.

One of the bigger things they were talking about is that the tutorial section was actually trying to teach you theory and technique about how to play fighting games at a higher level.

Jeff has been pretty vocal about fighting game tutorials for a while, so I'm not surprised in the least that they made it a significant part of the QL.

Agreed :)

BUT THIS STYLE IS JAPANESE SO IT'S PORN

I don't think the style is even particularly Japanese.

It's maybe on the level of Soul Calibur and DOA at the outside, and I think those are easily worse. You people are just freaking out because it's animated in 2D instead of 3D and you think that makes it "hentai" for some reason.

The characters in Skullgirls are no worse than characters in Marvel or Mortal Kombat.

If someone reviewed mortal kombat without mentioning the outfits/gore it would also be ridiculous. Same with soul calibur the art is fucking disgusting and ignoring that in a review would be insanity.

Well I'd give them a pass because MK is a decades long franchise that is obviously gorey but skullgirls could be literally anything/any art style.

That sounds more like a job for the ESRB than a game review to me, but as long as you aren't claiming that Skullgirls is worse than other fighting games I can at least see where you're coming from.

I was attacking "righteousness". Saying it is a certain way is completely different from saying it is morally wrong. Which is nauseating.

I'd say skull girls/trouble witches neo/gal gun are worse than mk/soul calibur because the gigantic breasts and skimpy outfits are on characters that otherwise look about ten years old which is where is crosses the line from needless tits to creepy and gross for me.

I'm a bit confused as to why you insist that a review needs to address this. Whether sexually charged or not, these are just drawings, and apparent age is arbitrary. I mean, if you're creeped out by drawings, that's fine, but that doesn't imply a reviewer would be. There are things called screenshots, gameplay footage and demos that allow you to make that determination on your own. A reviewer's responsibility is to provide his opinion; whether or not he's creeped out by something, it's not his job to say something like "but others might be".

I think the lamest part of Skullgirls is the constant flashes of panties with leg sweeps and boobs jiggling all of the place. It being a cartoon adds another layer of creepiness also.

It's like, did we really need to do that? Fan service at its absolute worst and these kinds of things make me embarrassed to be a gamer.

I don't know if this is a problem that I have or a problem that you have, because it looks... well, let's not say normal, but I've seen worse stuff in advertising from the 50's.

Personally having just gone to see Tekken Tag 2 (and having had a look at one of their weird Bishoujo statues) it doesn't seem terribly out of place. It's not great, but it doesn't stand out to me the way stuff like the mechanics do.

I will admit to the Nurse character being creepy as fuck though.

What? Soul Calibur has been tits and ass all over the place since day one. Play as Taki and watch the camera pan and zoom over her parts. No game has ever been more blatant.

You never liked cheesecake art?

I think you might be drawing your own images over what is actually there because it is cartoony(in other words: you are susceptible to your knee-jerk reactions). Peacock is the only character that looks anywhere near that young, but she is covered up (and like some other characters not very human looking during her attacks.)

Also cartoons have always been sexualized (simply less so since they began to target kids more and more and America became more PC about them), so I don't know why I don't know why Skullgirls is especially "creepy" for it (like it isn't crossing any lines).

Fan service at its absolute worst and these kinds of things make me embarrassed to be a gamer.

Cognitive dissonance with avatar. Seem very proud of Arkham City's Catwoman (possibly also Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and to a lesser extent any of the female characters in the game) which should embarrass you.

I wonder if people think John K draws "Weeaboo ladies" lol.

Sounds like you have a personal problem. No one gives a shit about your taste in vidya game women. Look at Ivy. Fucking whore. But man since shes not drawn in shitty ass anime art she's like a real life women so its okay!

Awkward and shitty? Fucking looks amazing in motion. Doesn't have jaggies, and is fluid as hell.

Love all the bitching about it though. Games rated M and some of you guys act like fucking 12 year olds when it comes to content.

The 10-year-old complaint makes no sense at all to me. If anything you can say the exact opposite, that half the cast has huge boobs. But still, with the exception of Valentine (the most cheesecakey of all the characters) and maybe Cerebella they're showing less of them than, say, C. Viper. Filia shows less skin than Sakura, for chrissakes. What happened when Rumble Roses came out, did everyone pass out from nosebleeds?

Japanese cultural reference, your post is now hentai.

I'm not really "bitching." I think the animation is well done, and I even like Peacock's design. It's just unfortunate for yet another game that I'm interested to be embarrassing to play in front of almost everyone I know, particularly when it's a competitive game that could be great for local multiplayer.

I agree that tasteless female character designs can be found in pretty much every fighting game (and to address someone's straw man from earlier, the approach Rumble Roses took prevented me from ever being interested in it), but it becomes more noticeable when there are less than ten characters and almost all of them have that problem. I'd feel the same way about Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a game that I love, if every character looked like Felicia.

I know the Skullgirls Quick Look isn't as "entertaining" as others as a result, but the emphasis on training mode is a good thing IMO. People need to make that a big deal, it's the most progressive part of Skullgirls IMO and getting that out there to create that precedent and standard for fighting games is important.

But what's this about Namco holding patents?

The characters look like 10 year olds? Some folks couldn't sound more insecure if they tried.

Thank God I wasn't like this when I was a kid. Everything on cartoon network would have seemed like a moe atrocity to me.

I think they were talking about Sega. They hold some patents for particular things that make VF's tutorial so good. The guys at ASW had to wrangle with limitations and came up with their own unique solutions for those issues in challenge mode replays iirc(probably wrong here). I don't know anything about Namco though. This may be why Capcom never added replays to their mission modes(did they add this in AE 2012? I have no idea).

Giantbomb really should have done the tutorial offscreen so that they could better articulate the ups and downs of that mode while playing it. They probably could have zoomed past it much faster and covered other features of the game. I don't see the point in watching someone struggle with basic concepts for fifteen minutes when a lunch break's worth of playing would have covered the tutorial for someone who is no familiar with the genre. It felt like they were just dialing it in.

It still wasn't that bad, but certainly not amazing either.

I don't get it, either. They don't look like ten year olds, they just look like cartoons. I'm honestly baffled.
