The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Wait, I don't really get the complaints. He seems.. fine? Or at least as someone who hasn't played the game yet he didn't seem to do anything glaringly dumb for someone who's probably still learning the game.

Pretty much this.

And watching that boss fight was weird. I have no idea why the orbs weren't hitting the boss when you shot them. When I played it they hit the boss right away.

The weapons have varying ranges.

Which is why he could shoot them right? So they were supposed to fall and hit the dragon in the water. He's saying he doesn't know why they didn't do that.

Edit: This is more of a question then a statement. I believe that's what he's saying.

Oh, I see. Nevermind then.

I do recall having to hit multiple sets of orbs to stun the dragon so I thought that part was normal.

Yea sorry that's what I meant. Maybe it has to do with auto-aiming being enabled in the options?

The AR bit actually went better than I expected, the cards seem a lot more finicky than the normal ones. I think Brad actually did a good job trying to show all the stuff crammed into this game.

Jeez, Patrick tiptoeing around just saying "this game is really bad" and really not knowing anything about this series made neither for an informative nor an entertaining representation of the game. At least they could appreciate Majima like good people should do.

Huge fan of the Yakuza games and yeah Dead Souls is pretty bad. Plenty of stuff for die hards if you can tolerate the framerate/controls/camera

Bottom line is the engine was not designed for all the things they were making it do. Everyone should play Binary Domain instead.

you guys

Drew in the distance saying 'Head tracking!?' was great.

I love the city environments in the Yakuza games. You get a great sense of place from them. I think it's odd that there's like a million games set in New York City that don't exactly feel like the city beyond the odd barked accent and the obvious landmarks, and yet Yakuza can give a good impression of being Tokyo without much competition.

Maybe it's because you have to walk everywhere? I don't know.

Yeah, I don't think Dead Souls is the best introduction to Yakuza. Don't let that game colour your opinion on Yakuza in general. Those games aren't designed to be shooters at all and they're using a very similar engine for this game.

Even GTA 4?

It's surely just the sense of familiarity coming from the fact that Kamurocho is the exact same fucking place since the first game that gives you this impression!

I think to 'get' Dead Souls, you have to have played Y3 and Y4. The odd thing about the Yakuza games is that you get to love how dated some of the gameplay is, it's very hard to explain. Easier to explain is love of the characters and storylines, and the sense of humour that is found in all of them.

If you have that under your belt, then the dated gameplay in Dead Souls isn't going to surprise you really, and you'll be more focused on the characters and what's happening to this city you know so well.

Not sure the voice acting/lines of dialogue could turn me off any more than they already have. Was even hard to get through the QL listening to that crap.

Yeah, judging the Yakuza series from just Dead Souls is like judging the Mass Effect series from playing ME3 in action mode.

Yeah, pretty much. This is a fanservice game.

Patrick should totally play through Yakuza 4. On camera. Maybe, with someone else watching. Make it a daily thing or something.
The next endurance run. It's perfect, since it can get as wacky as Persona 4.
(Although I still think Yakuza 3 is the better game, storywise).

Brad is awesome. Also, his sultry voice sounds especially sexy with the new Bombcast mics giving that extra compression and range. mmm

On-foot sections of Kid Icarus(which seemingly make up the bulk of the game) look BAD. It's like Sakurai designed this game in a vacuum without ever taking a look at a competent third-person shooter.

I'm also surprised that it actually really does require the stand. How can you design a game like this?

The on-foot sections are bad. I didn't particularly enjoy the controls at all when I played it, but the TPS-esque parts were especially bad. It just doesn't feel good dragging the camera around (that's literally what you do) while simultaneously trying to move around and shoot stuff.

It looked like playing a PC third person shooter but your mouse surface is the size of a playing card so, you have to constantly lift the pointer.

So I'm guessing I should skip the Kid Icuras quick look so I do not have to deal with getting upset with 30 minutes of complaining about the controls. Its so annoying seeing so much hate for the controls on that game. Not every game needs to be a dual joystick controls. This game was clearly made to be a light gun shooter controlled hsmr first and formost and because of that when you the controls are far snappier and far more accurate then a second analog stick.

And turning is not that hard at all. You just flick the thing to start turning and touch the screen again to stop. Flick and touch. Flick and touch. (its not a "drag" btw, if you are dragging it then you need to rewatch the "How to play" or replay the first level because they explain this concept in like 5 different ways between the two). Its two simple motions and to see such a outrage over it is so disconcerting. Its actually even more natural then that because if you are spinning and you see an enemy you actually touch the screen to start aiming at the enemies and that happens to stop the spin because touching the screen stops the spin. So in that sense you practicly only have to remember to flick. You can do a complete 360 turn on a single flick too, so the above 3 posts don't make any sense.

If you don't go into thinking this should be a dual joystick type of shooter then you could probably learn the new controls in the first 5 minutes by chapter 2 or 3. It took me much longer to learn dual stick controls by comparison, and it still would be a useless control scheme if the aim down the sites button didn't snap to enemies like it does now.

Blah blah blah just watch the damn thing and then complain

I'm more complaining about the posts here then the video, and was intending to ask if the video was the same so I'd know if its worth watching, though I guess I got caught up with explaining the controls to the people that didn't understand the controls and forgot my original question.

Yeah, you read like you'd misplaced one of you Icarus OT posts.

And the people that were saying Kid Icuras controlled poorly didn't read like that? If people weren't complaining then I wouldn't have said anything.
