The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Personally I like how Giantbomb has a range of personalities who do each segment in their own unique ways. I enjoy Patrick quicklooks just as much as everyone else's. I learn so much!
He shares a lot of knowledge but it always feels like he has simply read the related Wikipedia article an hour before. When Jeff shares his knowledge it feels more like reading the "Video game facts that blow your mind"-Thread than Wiki.

I think Patrick is still trying to figure out what he wants to be. I just hope that - if he wants to be the knowledge guy - he tries to present it in some other way. It really feels like a Wiki-reading sometimes.

It's the "never stop running around aimlessly"-bit that makes me skip the QLs where he plays. :(

I really liked that he actually pointed out the terrible things in SH collection, cause it can easily be missed when watching the video or you could think it was just the flash player messing up or whatever. Same with the whole fog thing. It annoys me when he is wrong and sounds like whatever he's saying is a fact though...The Silent hill quicklooks has been king of painful in that regard.
Was rolling my eyes at what he thinks silent hill 3 and 4 are about. I thought he said hes a huge fan and played through these games.

Edit: I like Patrick and think he was a great addition to bomb crew, I actually do enjoy his commentary and info dump about developers behind a game. Its just this one thing struck me as pretty silly.

Anyone else think that Patrick just doesn't get what people actually like about QLs? He keeps blabbering about the game as if he's reading from a script whereas Jeff & Vinny just play the game like a normal person would. I've had to stop watching the Silent Hill and Walking Dead QLs about a quarter of the way through each because I just can't stand it, when I'm normally able to make it through all the way even if I don't care about the game but just leave the video playing on another tab.
He never shuts the fuck up about the history behind every developer whoever worked on a franchise. And it's just repeating memorized information instead of any real insight, human Wikipedia.

Walking Dead looks great, shame that there's no subscription deal on XBLA as I've still got a ton of MS Points.

Pretty sure he said he WASN'T a MASSIVE fan in the video...
You dont have to be a big silent hill fan to know that 3 doesnt take place entirely in a mall or that 4 doesnt star the same girl as 3, especially if you supposedly beat these games.

Maybe Im going off what he said in the downpour ql.

He always pretends to have more knowledge then he does, especially when the person he's talking to admits to their knowledge gaps.

When Shenmue came up and Jeff and Ryan were cold on it he played the worst devils activate I've heard on a games podcast, not knowing playing the game at all but trying to guess why it's fans like it but he k=never admitted this was what he was doing.

People are some times down on Garnett Lee for playing devils activate but most of the time he understands both sides points.

internet high five

You 2 should get together with ''My name tag says I want to be the guy'' guy and reminisce over your favourite pat moments.

A scat fan.

Who doesn't like Scat?

40 seconds in and I'm stitches. Yup, Vinny/Jeff QL.

Traversal in Prototype 2 looks just as good as it was in Prototype. Graphics still aren't that great, though!

edit: daaaamn that AI is stupid. "this guy's not looking" rofl. Certainly helps to keep the flow of the gameplay going, though. I don't think I have a problem with an open world superhero having some broken mechanics.

I think I figured out why Patrick has started annoying me in these.

Other Quick Lookers will at least stop for a second and look/listen/pay attention to what's happening in the game and then talk about stuff in between, while Patrick NEVER STOPS TALKING and barely pays attention.

I love the fact that he actually does research, which makes him an excellent choice to do QL's that aren't just fumbling around and not knowing what to do. That, and he tries to be enthusiastic and instructive in an QL.

I hate the fact that sometimes his research consists of half-remembered Wikipedia articles and NeoGAF posts. That, and he sometimes can't help but overexplain certain things without letting them speak for themselves.

For example, I loved that he talked about the voice acting changes, why they occurred, what ended up happening, etc. I hate that he ended up talking loudly over every cutscene and bit of voice acting so that he could editorialize about vaguely recalled Silent Hill games and the nature of HD remakes.

That's my only problem with him in QLs as well. Less is more some times. He hasn't been doing them nearly as long as the other 4, so it's only natural that he's still finding his footing. He knows what he wants to say going into the video, then just can't help but get it all out as fast as possible, rather than wait for a specific moment that will illustrate the point he wants to make, then use that as an opportunity to draw attention to it.

For instance, rather than talking about how characters will remember your dialogue choices much earlier on in the quicklook, he could have waited until the conversation with the two guys by the car to bring it up, since that's the first occurrence of that mechanic in the game.

If it's more than zero, it's too many.

He should also be removed from the bombcast; pay him to write, not speak. That said, he's still better than Alex
I would agree with all of that, i didn't get the Alex hate until i saw him at the live PAX thing.. wow.. if Patrick being there keeps him away from QL's, lesser of two evils it is then.
The game and whoever sits in on a QL with him. He has a tendency to cut people off.

THIS. his timing is off, and the ill advised retort to Nolan Norths jab at his youthful look did him no favors.

I can't wait to hear him interrupt himself and paraphrase what his other self was about to say for him. Paraphrase paradox.

Patrick A will be a recording of him talking about Persona "facts" (persona is a dating sim series that added monster combat to cash in on the pokemon craze, persona 2 had red/blue type versions, and america got the easier one but neither was considered good, persona 3 was about a magic grasshopper)

Patrick B will be a loop going "oh man" and "I Don't Like That At All!™"

If I was Patrick, I would compile every single negative thing said about me into a giant document, print it out, and hang it on the largest wall in my house.

Or make it into my own personalized daily flip calendar for my office desk.

this prototype 2 quick look is great.

anyone else think its funny how instead of calling it absorbing/consuming he just says I'm gonna eat him.

So mean :(

Nice to see them dig the Walking Dead, I still think they were too harsh on Jurassic Park, it's really wasn't that different than WD, WD is just executed better. Probably didn't help they played it on console.

It looks easier than the original prototype in that the superpowered baddies don't take off half your health in one hit.

The first Prototype wasn't that hard either if you did some of the sidestuff and took a bit of time to master the controls.

Sure, you could learn it, but you were very fragile, even with all the unlocks (I bought every thing in the game). Even the beginner monsters could tear you apart if you were careless, Mercer just couldn't absorb a ton of punishment. On the other hand, it was really easy to take care of them and replenish health. Here, though, Jeff's getting smacked around and his health isn't really dropping much.

it gets worse later on. Jeff hasn't really run into rocket launcher spam yet. Where I've gotten in the game, you're getting bombarded by several of those big Blackwatch guys, Hunters, Brawlers, and Helicopters with rockets. The main difficulty is that you lose health slowly, but it's a huge pain to recover in the middle of combat because you're constantly getting smacked around by the big guys and the infected. Some missions are easier than others, of course.

Prototype 2 looks like the sort of game I would be okay watching a friend play for an afternoon or two but not something I would want to play myself.

You auto eat it when you beat it.

Well you couldn't take a lot of hits, but you were so fast and had so many options you wouldn't really be taking hits any more.

Not to mention you could just outrun anything at that point as well.

Did he need to stealth the first half?
With what happened post cutscene it looks like he was over thinking it.

Jeff commented several times during the stealth part that he wanted to succeed for the bonus XP for not being seen gaining access to the Doctor's office. This required stealth(and the bonus objective is clearly visible on screen the entire time on the lower left).

Once the cutscene with the Doctor ended, he got all the bonus xp and then went nuts. He only really needed to stealth kill two guys to get door access and monster gate access. He was overly careful, and took down way more dudes, but its stealth...gotta be extra careful of failure.
