The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

That's stupid. You're suggesting that they're lying to us rather than spare our feelings about how they feel about some videogame system. It's far more likely that they are being honest about how they don't want to do OTS videos. Quality isn't even the only reason for why they wouldn't want to do it; for the Vita QL the OTS camera meant there was an actual person standing behind Jeff the whole time filming the games.
Instead of setting up a tripod? How brain dead do you believe the staff at GiantBomb to be? When they do the Kinect QLs where we see them on the green screen, do you think Vinny is sitting their legs-crossed with a camera on his shoulder for half an hour?

Regardless of normal video quality, no one wants to watch offscreen footage of a handheld game for 30 minutes, and that setup is even worse than the clunky 3DS capture unit on them I'm sure. If Sony gets their shit together with capture units I think we will see them go back and play some of this stuff that they aren't filming now.

I think it's far more likely no one watched the Vita videos so they don't bother making more of them.

Ah yes, Giant 'no one shows up for ps3 tnts so we don't do them' Bomb has much to hide. The videos performed as well as other QLs that month so it's a non point anyhoo.

Apples and oranges. There's a world of difference between setting up a camera to pick up a fixed position and capturing footage over the shoulder. With a tripod that means that whoever's playing needs to sit completely still (and even with a handheld camera they can't move much -- another reason not to do them). It's a shitty situation by every metric, not just video quality.

Seriously, just watch the Vita marathon; there was a dude there, shooting over Jeff's shoulder. There wasn't a dude shooting them when they did the Kinect marathon. So to answer your question, I don't think they're braindead at all. They know what they're talking about -- you, meanwhile, have some insane notion that they're lying to us for some nebulous reason.

Lying is strong word in this context, and not one I used.

I don't think a lack of direct-feed is the only reason they're not going Vita quicklooks. The fact they've done them before, and did a semi-one of RE:R not long ago suggests they are willing to do so when they're inclined.

Or in an infinitely more likely scenario, they tried it...and didn't like how it looked, so they stopped. They tried again with RE:R and still weren't fans.

No, it's the word I used. Jeff straight up stated why they're not doing Vita QLs. You're saying that's not the real reason. So Jeff is saying something other than the truth, but he's not lying?

They did it for RE:R because they wanted to show the absurd peripheral attached to the 3DS. And even then they only show about 5-6 minutes of actual OTS footage (including about a minute of showing the peripheral) out of a 43-minute QL. I mean, obviously they're not allergic to OTS footage. They seem to think it's shitty, though, and said as much, and don't want to do it.

Not a single word Patrick says in this video helps me understand how to play this game.

I find this to be a recurring theme of Patrick quick looks. I tend to try and avoid them, unless it's a game I'm thoroughly interested in, when he's in them tbqh...

It's not that easy to explain, but makes sense once you try it out for yourself.

I thought it was fairly obvious from just looking at what happens on the screen. You need to mirror the shape in the background in a limited number of moves, and putting pieces on the side splits up the shape.

Setting the stage in the first sentence.

Holy christ this game is a disaster.

Oh wait, I think this game might actually be brilliant. It's like you're fighting someone else for control of the character, and losing.

Oh shit, the ingame character is throwing around the GB Gang sign!

I think the game actually looks like it would be great with, say, a mouse and keyboard. Or any sort of reliable controls.

You would probably understand it more if you mute what Patrick says and just watch the video.

Dunno what video you guys are watching but I understood things perfectly from Patrick explaining them. Getting the feeling you are all going into watching the videos with the assumption that Patrick's explanation is going to suck, and therefore perceive it as such.

Patrick hate. Nothin' new.

I had some minor issues with Patrick on the Bombcast early on but lately, I look forward to hearing from him. When he's Quick Looking a game he's actually enjoying, he does a good job of explaining whats going on and what makes the game interesting. When he's in goofy Quick Look for a game they expect to be horrible, he can lay it on a bit thick but so do they all. My game tastes don't line up well with his (I'm somewhere between Brad, Vinny and Dave) but I enjoy his enthusiasm and his willingness to play just about anything.

That might be the case for you, or me, but I've learned that not everyone grasps game mechanics that quickly, especially not just from looking at it.

It's like the main character is just fucking with Brad. There is no market for a super tense, extremely difficult first person mech game with completely broken controls.

Edit:

I think that Steel Battalion quick look was supposed to make not want to play the game but now I really want to try it, and I had no interest in it before. >_>

Or maybe I'm wrong.

I've been finding all of their quick looks pretty boring for a while now. I still watch all of them but it's typically in the background while I do other stuff, I can't remember the last stand out that commanded my attention.

The last good one was probably Battleship, and that's because they were all ready to shit all over the game but then got caught off guard with being able to move ships around.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I haven't really enjoyed most of the quick looks this entire year so far (some I haven't even bothered to watch after like 2 or 3 minutes in), but I don't know why off the top of my head. I do the same thing as well where I have them in the background as I do other stuff.

There has still been a few standouts I guess, though.

Part of it comes down to knowing exactly what to expect with a game before you even watch it. Like, you knew that they would shit all over Inversion without having to watch the QL.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor was the first QL in a while than actually felt depressing. The game was bad, Brad was sad, Jeff seemed depressed that the game was bad.

I should have expect this from Capcom!
