The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Doesn't that assume that the person holding the vita wouldn't have any handshakes or move the vita at all while holding it?

I dunno, seems like alot of trouble for off screen footage.

It's more of a joke, really. But the mirror and the camera phone would be fixed to the Vita, which would mean you could move the thing around and stuff. But it would be heavy. Also, you'd probably have to even out weight so that it balances well.

In practice though, the footage would be shaky because the supports would have to be too heavy to not vibrate upon movement, and the parallax would reduce image quality (seeing as the mirror is tilted towards the screen).

It's not a feasible solution, all in all. What's feasible is grabbing the video signal from the cable to the screen, but I assume that the protocol is unknown. And you probably can't trivially open the cables and solder stuff onto them. So Sony needs to step their game up, let houses send in their Vita on request, split the cable, add a repeater for voltage, and a chip that translates the signal to something that makes sense, like HDMI.

Edit: On the other hand, back in the 80s, screenshots were made with cameras fixed to monitors and shit (and I would assume footage as well). So get on it, dudes. Hahaa

Penny Arcade looks fucking fantastic
It looks great, although I will miss the art style (non polygon portions) of the first two games. Their comment about the length of the game did have me thinking. It really looks like it took a long time to get to the end of the docks area only because there were just so many battles to fight. The other games were not as long but it felt like they may have just upped the levels needed and the enemy encounters to make it longer.

I would really like to wait for this to hit the ps3 but I may get it from steam so I can play it.

The thing that impressed me the most about that Pennyarcade quicklook was that the bad guy sprites actually animated!

The baddy sprites in the snes FF games were beautiful but ultimately just a 'portrait'.

And I maybe cheap, but some of the writing gave me a chuckle.

Ugh. Platforming in first-person games is almost never good. And it just makes matters worst when the game forces you to keep moving.

Do people seriously have that much of a problem platforming in the first person? I usually love that stuff.

In a few games its total bunk, but yeah i agree. The platforming around cubes to get extra upgrades was one of my favorite things in Tron 2.0

It didn't seem that difficult, it looked like Ryan isn't used to mouse & keyboard FPS controls what with how his mouse movement was all jittery. He probably could have nailed that end if he plugged in a controller.

I wouldn't call it shitcakes but it's not that great. It's competent at best.

Mirrors edge and metroid prime are the only ones for me that are actually really good.

Metroid Prime? Sure. I thought it was a nice touch that they'd angle the camera downwards a bit when jumping to help you land in the right spot.

Mirror's Edge though? Fuck that game. Seriously the most frustrating game I've played in the last decade. Probably feels great when you've learned the levels and there's some flow to it, but on my first playthrough I just couldn't stop dying.

Quick Look: Resonance (Caravella, Davis | 32:49)
Global mayhem? Monsters? Whatever's going on in this adventure game, Vinny and Ryan have work to do

Never had a problem with it (except for Xen of course). The "no platforming in a FPS" rule always felt completely arbitrary to me.

Nonetheless, it's an old sentiment, and one that's been adopted in most FPS' game design these days. Jumping was also the worst part of many third person games of the time, like Alice, or Max Payne.

Funny that Ryan missed voices in the PA game. There were no voices in the PA games.

Wait, maybe there was a narrator. But no character voices.

Music in that penny arcade game was great. Not a PA fan but I might actually check the game out this time.

What was with the jittery mouse movements at times with Quantum Conundrum? I'm guessing that was something on Ryan's end?

Quantum Conundrum didn't seem all that appealing to me. The setting didn't have much of a personality, the puns were terrible (whether they were intentionally terrible or not doesn't really matter), and the puzzles seemed to present too many "put this box HERE" scenarios for my liking.

Of course, the Quick Look only shows a slice of the game, and it might be more fun to actually play than it is to watch. I'm going to watch for impressions here and read a few reviews. There's definitely room for more puzzle games like this in the marketplace, and I'm surprised to see so few developers going after a slice of Portal's success.

Walking around in a 3D enviroment to push buttons, and place blocks, and do physics-y stuff to solve puzzles is kinda tedious and shit. I could stomach that in Portal because of its brilliant design, but Quantum Conundrum is completely off putting to me. I would rather play Picross or something like that if I want a little brain teaser.

Man, I got motion sickness watching the Quantum Conundrum QL. I'm not sure why that is, because I'm usually okay when they play FPSes.

So I was looking at a video of Deadlight on Gametrailers.com and had this weird flash back. I'm pretty sure GB did a quick look EX with a developer of a similar 2D game (3D graphics) that had a very similar playstyle and graphics were similar. Yet there is no quick look for Deadlight and I'm pretty sure the quick look I'm talking about had no zombies or anything.

What was it? GOD DAMN.

PS. Even if it wasn't on GB, what other similar games have been released this year?

Was it War of the Worlds or something like that?
