The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

i don't mind these games but the writing/localization is kinda terrible and unfunny. i like the art tho and the music is really soothing.

I was really hyped for this game since its just "My favorite parts of Persona 3/4: THE GAME" and it looks/sounds very nice but all of the writing in that quick look was just terrible. I had to stop at the "I sense a disturbance in the force" line. For a game centered around comedy, you'd think it'd actually be funny

That being said, I'd still would like to give it a whirl some time but I'm definitely waiting on a sale.

katawa shoujo... I should pop back in that OT, but i'm scared ~

Shame capcom couldn't get better folks to localize. AA is freaking hilarious, so they can if they try.

Might check it out though, art and music is decent.

How was it terrible? I thought is was really well done across the board. And compared to KS it was much better.

KS is a lot more traditional in form but the meaning is so much stronger because of it. Analogue read to me like an extremely blunt morality tale in a foreign culture difficult to relate to, hidden interestingly on a spaceship's log files that had no real/effective message or meaning. Digital was much better.

I haven't played Analogue yet (i own it on steam though so i might as well get on that) but "extremely blunt morality tale" sums up the ending of Dont Take It Personal, It Just Aint Your Story leaving me feeling like Digital was just a fluke

I have no real history with VNs so whether it's classic or not has no real weight for me either way but personally, the writing in KS seemed like it should have been more intriguing than it was. I've played through the Emi, Hanako and Shizune lines, in that order and it seemed to me in the first 2 specifically, that the issues these characters have to deal with, aren't really all that interesting or mysterious, certainly not enough to carry half the damn story. With Emi specifically
I felt her issues with her accident and Father's death were extremely obvious and simple. Yet the protagonist acts like he doesn't know what happened for most of the story, I was expecting there would at least be some twist or surprise but nope.
Hanako's didn't really impress, Not much happened other than a basic connection between her and the protagonist, but it seemed short enough to not drag on. Shizune on the other hand dragged on like a motherfucker. Hardly anything happened for like 3 parts and then when things actually get interesting between characters, it felt rushed and was over without much of a resolution. And the protagonist was a total douche throughout each story.

Don't get me wrong though, I did enjoy it. It could have been much worse than it was. But I liked Analogue more because it was basically the opposite. It delivered an interesting story that you unravel. And you actually feel like the main character, discovering this weird space society and delving into its mysteries. And that's what I find most important in a good story, for it to really suck you in and engage you and make you feel like you're in this universe. And I felt the twists and mysteries were actually that, twists and mysteries. I plan on playing it again when Hate+ is released and I'll probably analyse it more critically but right now it's the one I enjoyed more and definitely in my top games of this year.

Man, I felt totally the opposite about Analogue. It was a mystery for the sake of being a mystery, for the sake of 'gameplay', so you had an excuse to go flitting between file structures and oh man, everybody kept journals, how convenient! There was nothing hard-hitting or enjoyable about its twists or mysteries other than "Oh, I guess she did that". There was no connection. The two AIs weirdly flirting with you sucked, too. If it had been about whatever happened that made the society regress into weird Korean patriarchial dynasty, now that would have been interesting. As it was, the Pale Bride story arc was completely meh to me. The most interesting thing in that entire game was the erotic stories one of the concubines had written and the Unix text parser.

Katawa Shoujo was never about the mystery to me; it was about something far more real than that. Relationships and people. Dealing with them, dealing with yourself. With your own situation, with your condition, with the way that you are or how other people are. It spoke to me. Analogue never, ever did that. Far too blunt. What was the moral? What did I learn? What was interesting? Don't be a Medieval Korean patriarch? Already covered. Great job.

Analogue didn't even have a main character. It was just you. There was the conceit you were some, I don't know, Space Insurance Investigator or some bullshit, but that never mattered, not really.

I don't think it was really supposed to be a moral story. It was more of a look into these types of societies that existed and still exist in some areas, and what it would be like to live in such a society. I'll agree the use of diaries did feel contrived a few times but I felt it allowed for you to really get into that world and understand the motivations and emotions of those characters and I'm not really sure there would be a better way to achieve that, without video or audio logs as well.

KS was the one I felt was obvious. With the protagonist having so much trouble with figuring out how to treat people. Here's a hint, treat them like fucking people, they're still people whether or not they're disabled. And maybe it's because I'm not that familiar with the genre, but following this guy around and watching him act like an ass and say things I would have never said really bugged me sometimes. I liked in Analogue how many choices it actually gave you, some of them weren't that important but it always felt like you were in control. And you could act like a real asshole if you wanted to.

It's pretty much exactly like reading a book with a main character. And the 'treating disabled people differently?' thing pretty much faded into the background by the end of the first act (except for
Hanako's, where it was pretty much the entire point of the arc
).

I guess it all just comes down to this: you had some kind of emotional connection to the characters in Analogue. I had none. Nada. Zero. Nothing. It had the same amount of emotional resonance for me as a logic problem in an exam.

True but I should still be relating to this character at the very least. It's really my main problem with it as well as some dragging in Emi's and a lot in Shizune's. Really, an emotional connection is the most important part of any story when it comes down to it.

No, I liked Emi's. But there was a bit of dragging in the
cheating
sub-plot. Shizune's was way too long though, which is a shame because they could have done some really interesting things with the
conflict between her and Misha.

Man, vinny's voice "impersonation" quota has significanty risen these past few quick looks.

Though I laughed when brad yelled "I can't carry the ring for you, but I can carry YOUUUUUUUU."

The LLOTR QL was amazing. Shame they had to cut it short as they both wanted to continue playing.

I would watch a Brad and Vinny dub of all of the LOTR movies. Every time they started quoting the movie in the quick look I just cracked up.

As a shameless LoTR fan and a lover of the movies and the books, I'm really glad Brad and Vinny were in the LEGO Lord of the Rings QL. I don't think I would have enjoyed it at all if the QL was 30 min of clear disinterest. I guess that makes me a bad person because I get irritated by people who complain about them not loving their favorite game. My eyes have been opened to the plight of the irrational fan.

The consequences of Shizune's story made no sense to the actions you chose. Shizune's cool but her story's written pretty badly. I enjoyed reading it but I knew it was the weakest. And no one can argue about KS's writing until they've done Rin's story.

I went from, "Yeah this chick is pretty cool" to "Oh god what's wrong with you?" I was totally frustrated with her and I got the bad ending and felt good about getting it. Those feels. They may not have been happy ones, but they were there. It was well written.

I don't know how I managed to stay awake this late, but now that it's happened I guess I may as well watch some Next Gen™ quick looks.
