There's no glass half full. All this has done is made me absolutely sure and strengthen my resolve to get off my ass and help people. Always forwards, always.

I remember reading a 538 article about how Congress historically leans opposite of the president's party or even flips in the midterm elections, so there's that to feel energized about.

But man, you can see how fucking pessimistic I am in hoping for midterm turnout. We couldn't even get enough turn out in the presidential elections to stop this fuck in the first place.

That is what happened to Reagan, Bush, and Obama.

My optimism not only died, but I have no faith in my fellow man anymore. The fact that people were complicit in such disgusting behavior, allowing a demagogue to seize control through catchphrases and vague promises... It's hard to think that people are worth a damn. Thinking is apparently too much to ask.

It is disgusting when people on here try and humanize Trump.

This is a big fucking deal.

You know, when you click on a half-full thread looking for positivity , and this is the forth post you see, it's a real downer. You know, the opposite point of the thread. We all know it's not looking great.

Regardless, Trump's acceptance speech in comparison to what we had seen prior. I'm obviously not saying that we should expect that going forward, but we should at least have the slightest glimmer of hope. Our international affairs regarding the economy may not be as bad as we think. I'm not going to promote Trump's business acumen, but one would assume he is familiar with this area, for better or worse.

We all woke up this morning. We'll all wake up tomorrow. The only thing to do is look forward and figure what the next step is. It's time to swallow the pill, and figure out the best plan for the future.

Let's pray and hope (and of course put effort to make sure) it happens again.

Dems and us all need to bring the heat, and stoke the flames that have so many angered right now and get as much turnout as possible. Don't get complacent.

The senate is now three seats apart (if you count Sanders as a Democrat its 2 seats), and by the end of the 2018 election it will probably be a Democrat majority.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I swear to god if Dems don't come out in droves for midterm elections I will flip a bitch.

I want to say don't fucking count on it, but Dems did manage to "send a message" during the 2006 midterms after they were tired of Bush's shit. What Senate seats will be up for grabs in 2018?

I'm saying that I'm tried of people trying to make Trump look like he's not all that bad when he definitely is.

When you consider the Supreme Court nominations he will make and what he can do with his executive power this is a huge deal...
Is that it? If your big shock with Trump is that he can nominate justices you would have been flipping out over President Jeb.

So getting into why a Trump presidency might not be as doom and gloom as our emotions tell us, the first thing that is worth noting is that US democracy was designed to withstand terrible presidencies. Also, when we look at Donald Trump's political history, he is someone who has been around a long time, and actually has a longer history being a moderate than an extreme GOP candidate.
umm the thing about that is he has a republican house and senate. There are likely going to be no checks on him unless he actually does go "more moderate" as you are proposing he might in the rest of your post.

The problem with that is the house and senate are both republican, they could impeach him if they wanted to, Mike Pence would then be president which is maybe an even scarier thought.

Never mind all the hateful bigots who feel empowered by his winning. I would like to share your optimism but i cant.

MUnited83

For you.
The sky is falling. Republicans hold all the branches of power. His cabinet is filled with some of the worst people in the US. It will not be a good presidency. The sky is falling and you should be fighting the hardest you can to stop it. Don't ever fool yourself thinking that this isn't a big deal.

I think you guys need go seek professional medical help if youre literally feeling sick, anxious, stressed or depressed.

Seriously

maybe some of us actually care about other people than ourselves (not saying you don't) and that branches out to empathy for others which leads to the general concern for the health and well being of marginalized people.

I know several women woke up and posted on their facebook feed that they generally were worried about their own safety, and they're white. I can't even begin to imagine what POC are feeling right now.

It's truly horrifying. The shit we have glossed over, and the nerve of the fucking people on TV and his surrogates to have a damn victim complex about it when it's brought up.

But we also just have to endure it the best we can.

Sorry if it's hard for me to look at a half-full glass here. We could have been looking at a Democratic president, possibly a Dem Senate, and 2-3 decades of a liberal Supreme Court. That all went down the toilet in the blink of a fucking eye last night and instead we got all 3 branches controlled by a right-wing authoritarian psychopath who has the support of a lunatic Tea Party Senate and House and all the wonderful appointments they get to make from Federal judges to head of the EPA. And I'm supposed to pin my hopes on Democrats showing up for the midterms in two years?

This is a nightmare scenario any way you fucking slice it.

I hear you, and that's what I meant when I said it was our job to do what is right. That means it is our job to take a stand against extreme nationalism and bigotry. There is the possibility that Trump will be more moderate in office than he was during his campaign, but we still need to remain politically active, and stomp out bigotry wherever else we may find it.

In regards to the GOP holding the senate, as I mentioned before the senate and house tend to work against the oval office in the coming elections. That is, when Reagan took office his party controlled the senate, then they lost after he was elected. When Bush took office his party controlled both the house and senate, then after he was elected they lost both. When Obama was elected his party controlled both the house and senate, then after he was elected they lost both. If history repeats itself again the Democrats will take the senate in the coming elections.

but even if the senate seats remain the same, as is the majority of the senate are pro-Roe v Wade and pro-Obergefell v Hodges. Although the Republicans currently hold the majority in the senate, GOP senators like Susan Collins are actively defending women's and LGBT rights. This is very important, we mustn't give up on our country before it is lost, our political fate is still in our hands. In other words, PLEASE do not move to Canada, stay here and vote.

Which seats/states have the chance of flipping?

West Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, and Arizona probably have the best chance of flipping, but even if the senate seats remain exactly the same, the majority of the senate are already pro-choice, and pro-same sex marriage

In the wake of the impending Trumpocalypse we know we are about to endure. There is only ONE thing that brings me optimisim, and it's not anything in this thread.

It's in the PROTEST thread. If Trump's hate somehow creates a movement against the stupidity of the political system. That is the only good thing that will come from him.

well, accellerationism was a volatile but tempting fruit before

but I guess we're gonna eat that fruit now. so there's.... that.

Have you looked at the map, it's mostly D (like a ton of them) seats on the line with a handful of Rs with a bunch of them in basically unwinnable places.

It is a long shot beyond long shots.

If the Dems couldn't win a Senate majority this year I don't know how they're going to be able to in 2018.
