What is Half-Minute Hero?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Minute_Hero

Half-Minute Hero is a hybrid real-time strategy/action RPG/shoot 'em up developed by Marvelous Entertainment. It will be re-released on the Xbox Live Arcade on June 29, 2011 for 800 MS Points.

Half-Minute Hero's single player mode features 6 different game modes. Each mode is based on one part of a larger story, and as such, the last three modes are not available until the player has completed the first three modes; these last three modes are then unlocked in order after completing the previous mode. Each mode centers around a mechanic based on a limited amount of time (normally 30 seconds as implied by the game's title) to complete that part of the game.[8]

Hero 30 Mode plays similar to a console role-playing game. The player, as the Hero, is tasked by the Time Goddess to become powerful enough in 30 seconds to find and defeat an enemy boss that is seeking to cast a spell of destruction that will end the world in 30 seconds. To do so, the Hero explores an overworld, encountering random monsters with battles that take place automatically based on the Hero's current equipment to gain experience levels. The Hero can enter towns where the Time Goddess will pause time, allowing for time to shop for equipment and health items, talk to residents and find allies to help in battle, as well to pay money to a statue of the Goddess to reset the countdown timer to 30 seconds. Each successive use of this power becomes more costly to the player. There are 30 missions in this mode which are completed in succession; the player can go back to previous missions to try to better their performance or find additional equipment that will carry over into future mission; however, the player cannot use equipment gained on later missions during an earlier mission.

Evil Lord 30 Mode plays similar to a real-time strategy game. The player controls Evil Lord who can summon three types of creatures, Brawlers, Shooters, and Nimbles, to fight enemy forces and complete a task. The monster strengths are based on a Rock-paper-scissors approach; Nimbles are strong against Shooters and weak against Brawlers, for example. The overall strength of summoned creatures is based on the size of a mana ring that is shown around the Evil Lord character; summoning creatures and taking damage reduces the size of this ring. Wandering creatures can be brought into the Evil Lord's control by moving the mana ring over them. Due to his nature, the Evil Lord can only be out-of-doors for 30 seconds at a time, thus enforcing a 30 second countdown timer, but by paying money gained from defeating enemies to barrels where the Time Goddess is waiting, the countdown timer can be reset. There are also 30 missions to complete in this mode, but include branching paths.

Princess 30 Mode plays similar to a Shoot 'em up game. The player controls the Princess who is equipped with a rapid-fire crossbow as her main weapon, and a number of guards that carry and protect her as she ventures out of the castle to get items to help her ailing father. However, she is imposed with a 30-second curfew, and her speed is dictated by the number of guards in her group; running into enemies will cause guards to fall out of the group, though the Princess can never be directly harmed. The Time Goddess has provided stretches of red carpets which, while the Princess is over them, will roll back the countdown timer but cost money to do so. The 30 missions are provided in a branching manner, with some missions leading to the ability to boost the crossbow's power or increase the running speed of the guards.

Knight 30 Mode is an action video game, where the player controls a Knight who has vowed to help protect a Sage. The Sage has the ability to cast a spell of destruction that takes 30 seconds (though need not be continuous) to evoke; the Knight is tasked with defending the Sage during this time. This can be done by ramming into or throwing objects at enemies to stun them, or carrying the Sage to a safe location (during which the Sage cannot continue the spell). Certain levels features bells that distract the Sage and reset the spell's timer, but they can be destroyed by the Knight. If the Sage takes too much damage, the player must start the level over. The 30 missions in this mode must be completed in order.

Hero 300 Mode is similar to Hero 30 Mode, but the player has 300 seconds to complete the single mission of this mode. The Time Goddess is not available in this mode, and furthermore, certain areas of the map become inaccessible every 60 seconds of the game, requiring the player to continue moving to find and defeat the final boss as fast as possible.

Hero 3 Mode is also similar to Hero 30 Mode, but the player only starts with 3 seconds to reach and defeat the boss in the mode's single mission. Unlike Hero 300, the Time Goddess is available to reset time as necessary.

There is also a limited multiplayer mode in which two heroes can fight to complete a quest before the other. The multiplayer mode features three stages in which the two players will fight to collect power ups and level up in order to fight the Evil Lord at the end.

Marvelous officially revealed Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax in this week’s issue of Famitsu. Since we’ve been talking about the Xbox 360 release since February, it’s nice to hear more about it.

The magazine says Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax has two graphic styles – pixel art from the PSP version and a brand new Neo Cartoon mode. Marvelous also added 62 quests and online multiplayer.

Each RPG In Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Has Its Own Leaderboard

And when Marvelous means "RPG" we’re guessing they mean the 62 different quests in Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax. The Xbox 360 version is already localized in English too. That’s the game with English and neo cartoon graphics below.

Marvelous squeezed a new scenario in the Xbox 360 game and ten multiplayer maps for Super Hero Wars.

Princess And Evil Lord Modes Are In Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax

When we first heard about Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax, we initially believed that it only included the “Hero30” mode, based on information available at the time. This isn’t the case, according to Marvelous’ website for the game.

MMV’s site points out that the Princess 30, Evil Lord 30 and Knight 30 modes have all been rebuilt into an RPG style.

Wow really? That is suck. Princess 30 is the best mode by a country mile (though I could do without Evil Lord and Knight 30).

Edit: Oh they are in. That's ok then. If you don't have a PSP buy this game people.

I only have 660 points, if I could add 200 I would buy it as soon as it releases. It will have to wait a couple of weeks until I buy a 2100 points card.

This isn't Gurumin (oh GOD Gurumin on XBLA/PSN? shiiiiiiiiiiiiiii..).

But yeah, this is an awesome game, new players should be excited.

I already did a 100% run on the PSP version. Hero 300 and Hero 3 were my favorite modes.

Dunno if I want to do it again - is there anything newly added to this at all?

Why can't I find many pictures of the pixel art? Seems a mistake to not flaunt that in addition to the terrible cartoon art.

Just look for the PSP version.

That's why I'm so excited: Played and beat the PSP version ;)

I'm just hoping that they took the time to make the pixel art fully 'HD'

I've been looking forward to this. I'm interested to see how Evil Lord, Princess and Knight modes translate over to the RPG style gameplay.

Hmm... sounds interesting actually. I basically gave up on the PSP version after finishing the Hero 30 campaign because I hated the rest.

am i the only one who made an extremely thin sexual connection with "half-minute" and "climax"? ...guess so...

anyways this may be the first game i get for my newly found PSP, based purely on the adoration in this thread.

Unlikely, but I hope they changed the water texture in new style. It moved so damned fast it was making me nauseous.

What do they mean by rebuilt into an RPG style?

I'd like to think they turned them into all new hero 30 modes but thats being a lil overly optimistic, I guess.

In any case, if you haven't played it yet buy this damn game. It might very well be the most genius portable title I ever played at the time.

It's freakishly original, hilarious and insanely addictive.

Play with the original retro style though, looking at the budget new graphics in motion, it looks like it's going to feel really off.

I loved this game to death, spent a large amount of time playing it too, well worth the cost.

Nope. The pixel art is identical to the PSP, which means it runs at a quarter of the PSP's resolution (or 1/32 1/64* of 1080p). If you own a PSP, just get that version of the game and save yourself the eye rape of both the 360s graphical modes.

*Edit: Maths fail.

I have to admit I watched the trailer for this game on YouTube and I'm kind of confused if it's an action game or what. I kind of want it just based upon hype and all of your assurances that the PSP game was awesome, but is it RPG?? Action? Both?? In under 30 seconds?? Very intrigued but confused :|

You can go to Wikipedia or whatever for lucid, detailed descriptions, but genre-wise, it only comments on role-playing games.

You'll probably get disagreements about what the game is. That's a testament to its innovation! In my opinion, the largest portion (and what will be the only style in the sequel) is what amounts to a action-heavy puzzle game; if you take out the combat from role-playing games, you only have pre-battle and post-battle planning (i.e., puzzling).

The others are real-time strategy, action (escorting), and (ground-based) shoot-'em-up.

The game itself is probably great like the PSP version, but I hate the new art style :/
