Picking this baby up. I still haven't bought Trenched. Then there's summer of arcade. Too many games!

Is this identical to the PSP version other than the addition of coop, leaderboards and achievements? I already have it, but I'm tempted to double-dip.

If there's significant differences, I'll be rather more tempted :)

You can go to Wikipedia or whatever for lucid, detailed descriptions, but genre-wise, it only comments on role-playing games.

You'll probably get disagreements about what the game is. That's a testament to its innovation! In my opinion, the largest portion (and what will be the only style in the sequel) is what amounts to a action-heavy puzzle game; if you take out the combat from role-playing games, you only have pre-battle and post-battle planning (i.e., puzzling).

The others are real-time strategy, action (escorting), and (ground-based) shoot-'em-up.

Thanks, that sounds fun, I kind of was hoping it was more than just a beat em up/hit A and kill lots of enemies actually, it's possible to get that impression naively looking at the trailer.

People complain about the art style...even though it has the pixelated original art style...just use the original one and pretend the new one doesn't exist??? Same exact thing is going to happen when Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes are released :p

Princess 30, Evil Lord 30 and Knight 30 were all reworked to fit into the Hero 30 engine.

Also, good sales for this might encourage them to release the sequel in English at some point, so, if you ever wanna see that...

I'm buying this but I'm starting to get pretty annoyed about all of these XBLA and PSN games that never come to PC.

I've been replaying this casually on the PSP all this week, despite knowing that I am going to pick it up as soon as I can tomorrow. This game is so much fun and I am interested to see how Princess and Evil Lord work in the "RPG" format.

No way I had no idea it was being released this week!!!

I already 100% this game (reading through all those Achievements, I did all of those) on PSP and I'm excited to do it again! One of my most favorite games!!

It's a gag mode, basically. It only took me a couple dozen or so tries to figure it out though.
I almost had it last time but overshot the last town and went straight to the boss where I got promptly whomped.

Gag or not this is stupid as hell.

Nope. The pixel art is identical to the PSP, which means it runs at a quarter of the PSP's resolution (or 1/32 1/64* of 1080p). If you own a PSP, just get that version of the game and save yourself the eye rape of both the 360s graphical modes.

*Edit: Maths fail.

You're kidding. Won't buy, if true.

(Note to SHARD: The images in the opening appear to all be broken, except for the cover. Is it like this for everyone else, too?)

Everyone keeps harping on the optional new graphics, but does anyone else notice that it makes the game look like something out of a Shadow puppet play?

Given the fact that all the background, visible outfit and weapon modifications, and characters are redone to this style, and it includes faithfully blown-up versions of the original pixel art (with what looks to be very little to no filtering, thank goodness), I still think it's an impressive package for 10 dollars.

It's the same kind of play Outland was a reference to, just with animation and designs more accurate to the flat paper aspect of it's inspiration.

It's quite charming in it's own unique way, and seems to be an effort that should be cheered for, not ridiculed. Even the U.I. and Story Stills have been remade to fit the style! That's just so far beyond the ugly smear filters we usually get in situations like this.

I guess, but Nin2-Jump did it better.

Yeah I'm really not feeling the new Princess/Lord/Knight chapters.
Didn't like them in the original version either so I guess it's a wash.

Think I'll take some time to play the multiplayer mode and then figure out where to go in my review from there.

Only finished the first mode, but really enjoy the pixel graphics (haven't played the PSP version).

No idea why they'd make the modern graphics the default look when the pixels suit the style so well!

Wow Hero 3 mode is absolutely awful.
It's like a QTE RPG.

You're crazy, it's fun and requires some great precision. It's not meant to be a meaty experience, but it should give you a good ~15 minute run* at figuring out the exact timing. I thoroughly enjoyed it on the PSP, and I look forward to it again.

For Achievement hunters out there: I did all the requirements for the Achievements on the PSP... with exception of Title Master (and obviously the online ones). I TRIED doing that one, but what makes it hard is that the game does in no way tell you how or what unlocks titles. There is only one online FAQ, that's translated from the JP version on the internet, and it can be pretty vague sometimes as well.

Just a heads up for those looking for the full 200. I'm definitely going to be going for it... again!

Hero 3 still sucks.

lol damn dude, that's salty. I think it's a fun challenge, I'll agree it's not for everyone.

people who can't push buttons real fast

I didn't enjoy the Evil Lord and Princess modes at all... I wish Hero 300 and 3 were unlocked from the beginning in this one for those of us who have already played the original. I'm really looking forward to playing with the new art style graphics. I think they look really good... in screen shots at least!

It looks nothing like shadow puppets. Looks like a shitty flash game.

It looks very similiar to the colored paper puppets. The first things I thought of upon seeing the promo images was the fact that, especially for battle scenes, it looks like construction paper cutouts.

Even the animation looks similiar to the rotational pivots on a puppet like this:

It was also mentioned that HMH / Yuusha 30 began life as a flash game, so if all you see is "flash", it's actually appropo.

As garishly mis-matched as the old pixel art could be to each other, I'm not even sure how well this game woulda worked re-drawn with higher rez pixel art... unless it all jumped up a gen or 2, to look like mixmatch pixel parts of a bunch of Saturn RPGS or something.

the first shot from the game in SAB CA's post is gorgeous. reminds me of samurai jack. i think it's beautiful and far from shitty flash art.

No, it looks like it's constructed out of Vector graphics. Badly.

Yeah that's badly done vector animations for you. Saying a game animates like paper puppet is not a compliment, by the way. It's a jab, like calling a game a slideshow.

Whilst I didn't know that, it still doesn't excuse the style from being butt ugly. Not when the PSP's style was so fitting and charming in it's own right (though unfortunately a bad fit for 50" screens).

How about hand drawn sprites? In a purposely generic Chibi Anime style or something. Seems far more appropriate then amateur level vector art.

Half Minute Hero is a great game, which is why I won't excuse anyone who defends this travesty of an art style. It deserved better then this.

Right, those who know and follow the XBLA thread with regularity know that I often have codes to XBLA games to hand out to a few lucky winners. Indeed I have some for Half-Minute Hero, I have three to give and the way this is usually done is the the first three people who want the codes post here in the thread shall get them. This will be fast, but it is fair, good luck to you.

There, we are, we have three winners, and to anybody who posts and didn't win. Well, actually, I have another set of codes that I'll be handing out in a bit, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Thanks, Shard!

I have to say that the new graphics style actually looks pretty good in motion to me. Glad to have the choice, though. Can't wait to go through this again. It was such a fantastic experience on PSP.

Yeah, finally it's out. Too bad the first mode is the same as the PSP one, so I'll basically have to play it again. I was hoping it would have something different.. maybe I'll wait for a dotw :\
