TouchArcade TWEWY review: 5 stars. Pretty sure reviewer didn't finish it, based on some comments in the review.

Still worried I'm not a big enough fan of the style/genre. $20 is a lot of iOS games =

I'm the biggest fan of this game, and normally, I'd be pushy about recommending you buy the game. But I have to say, I'm super bugged by this whole situation of Square blocking the iPhone version on iPad. I'm still new to some of this stuff, but it seems clear they have intentionally broken App Store regulations (because they knew they could get away with it, feigning ignorance if it became an issue) to make more money. It's one thing to be greedy, but when you cry about piracy out of one side of your mouth and then break the rules with the other, that shit pisses me off. They don't just want their cake and eat it; they want my cake too.

I say, fuck 'em.

I don't disagree with you, but I'm amazed that we are humming and hawing over a $20 game. Do you remember a few years ago, when we would have lost our collective shit over a Square game being on sale for $20???

If it were a new game this would be something, but we're talking about a port of a game that was already old three years ago.

Wow, runs great and apparently it's quite a looker too :P

Yep. Contrary to that shitty Spider-Man game, which looks worse and runs worse.

Batman is a total guilty pleasure to me. I like the atmosphere, Gotham looks great, Batman looks great, voice acting isnt embarrassing and zipping and gliding through the city is fun and it works well. Missions are better than what I found in the Spider-Man game too, and they have a bit of that puzzle books design that albeit half assed makes you think a little before you decide which enemy to tackle first, removing snipers from buildings first, etc.

Sadly, it has that all the flaws that plague all of Gameloft's games. Glitchy, rushed and incomplete in pretty much every department. Combat is a super repetitive button mashy that fails to copy the Arkham games. It's bearable at least, and the animations are nice. Also, stealth is broken.

Pretty much your typical movie tie in game, but I found to be more enjoyable than most Gameloft's games, including the recent NOVA 3. I'm a Batman fan though, so I'm probably biased.

Give it a try when it drops to one dollar. :p

Edit: LightHeaven? Welcome bro! :D

This is a Square game though, not Madden.
Also, the amount of work they put into this justify it too imo. It's not like they directly ported the DS version with blown-up sprites, there's redrawn art, revamped gameplay, new songs. The crummy way they're dealing with iPhone/iPad versions sucks balls, but TWEWY is excellent and still so much better and content-filled than almost everything that's out today it's not even funny.

I can't belive Apple let Square Enix blocking iPhone TWEWY install on iPad (and as far as I read they were the very exact builds).
As far as I know, it's even against their own rules.
Surely other big publishers won't let this pass....right?

It strikes me I read it here and on TA...no website or journalist even dare to mention that.

Yeah. Reading Touch Arcade just makes me angry. I feel dirty reading their reviews when they are quite clearly either phoning it in or omitting critical information such as this (see above) in their reviews.

The 50MB limit isn't about downloading. It's about BUYING. You can't buy an app over 3G that's bigger than 50MB. So it kills all impulse purchases.

Game devs need to take every opportunity they can get. And if someone gets 90% of the way through the process... they find your app, hit the button, put in their password... then it doesn't download? Urgh. What are the odds that customer is going to remember to give the App another shot when they're in WiFi range?

The 50MB limit is critical. You need to stay under it. Or if you're going to go over you might as well blow past it.

I think you're overstating the importance of the 50GB limit. There are a number of examples of apps that are highly successful and yet blow right through the limit. Developers don't need to artificially reduce the content or quality of their titles so they can grab a few stray 3G impulse shoppers. Who buys games on their iPad with 3G anyways? That seems like an isolated use case. I'd love to see some empirical data proving me wrong.

Sure, games in the Angry Birds class of games probably don't need to sail beyond this limit and I imagine it's an absolute necessity for F2P titles, but games with a much narrower following (Carc, Spectromancer, Ravenmark, etc.) don't need to worry about some silly size restriction.

I've been eyeballing Epoch since release. I always thought it looked and sounded neat, but I've heard it was impossible later on without iap.

I don't mind the $3 asking price, but I do mind shitty iap practices. I picked it up last weekend when it was on sale, though, and have put like two hours into it and have loved it so far.

I can see that the best gear is super expensive, but so far money has been reasonably easy to come by.

The fiction is surprisingly rich and it's got good atmosphere. Lots of inventive inventory.

I really recommend it. It has a great feel just flicking your nimble character all over the screen.

Doesn't change the fact that TWEWY should be universal. Especially at $20

Edit: Also, I'm looking at some Infinity Blade 2 screenshots for the iPad. Yeah there are borders, but they're not the "upscaled iPhone app on an iPad" borders. They're only on the top and bottom of the screen, not the left and right sides as well. That doesn't bother me (can't speak for anyone else), and if that was necessary to make an app universal then so be it. I'd rather have that than pay $20 twice to have the app on different devices.

Technical reasons? Would you mind elaborating in what those are? I'm genuinely interested as to why some games/apps can't while many others can.

We made a couple of poor technical design decisions which made the effort required to support iPad properly take more resource than was tenable at the time. Ultimately, a time/cost issue rather than "it couldn't be done". We have, however, as time and resource permits been going back to those titles to remove black borders and properly support iPad resolutions.

I don't feel angry reading it, I feel embarrassed. It's got to be hard writing new stuff about endless runner #2765402 but the writing is just cringe-inducingly bad and reads like it was by a kid. In fact, it reads like the godawful Quake 2 reviews I used to do as a nipper, which is probably why it makes my skin crawl.

Problem is I bet many other websites will review the game, including the big ones like IGN.
I'm curious to see if they will point this out.

BTW...I do not have the game but if I did had the iPhone version and discovered that I cannot install it on an iPad 3, I would report the problem to Apple via their link.
Not necessarily asking for a refund, just pointing this out.

Besides I really do not understand why in the world one would buy a SINGLE PLAYER STORY BASED GAME twice.
Is there anyone that really play a bit of the story on iPad when at home, than REPLAY the very same bit of the story on the iphone when away?
Really?
If it had iCloud support I could understand (not endorse, but at least I could understand), but it hasn't.

I still think Apple should force devs to make Universal builds with iCloud.
And before the 'I've just an iPhone 3GS and do not want the huge retina assests on my device' start moaning I think that Apple should provide a way to have this like a iAP with downloadaable assets (some games already do this).
So I can buy the iPhone version for 10, then I want it to be Universal...I shed another 2 dollars and donwload the whole package.
Best of both worlds and a great convenience for those gamers that have multiple devices.

(And I do not even start about the iCloud convenience that let me delete and reinstall games at will without loosing progress, should be mandatory for every game above 500 Mb install considering space is limited in these devices).

okay, fixed the button replacement and shit on NOVA 3 so its pretty playable now. frame-rate is offensive, pretty horribly optimised and im on a 4s.

nova 3 is somewhat choppy, just how it is even using the old lower res on an ipad 3. Modern Combat 3 runs a lot smoother but it lacks all those fancy post processing features added to nova.

true, MC3 was still a pretty game though. that level were you sniping over the bridge and had all the snow effects genuinely impressed me.

I genuinely think anyone who bought TWEWY and has both an iPhone and an iPad should ask for a refund... why would Square stop releasing shitty ports with unethical, shady pricing if they know it's going to sell like hot cakes anyway?

I'm finally free from Puzzle Craft!!!!! :P

Just wanted to share!

I'm scared they announce expansions and the like when you get the castle tough!

i thought the consensus was that TWEWY was not a shitty port?

Well, it's not a shitty port and the people who are playing it think it's great and worth the price. Not being able to play the iPhone version on the iPad is indeed super shady and shouldn't be acceptable, I hope they're forced to fix it since apparently the way they did it also goes against Apple's TOS.

Why buy both? No iCloud saves. And what's shady? No iap.

And iPhone version not working on iPad is probably the shadiest thing... But why not just get iPad version?

There are shady shit on app store. This ain't that shady.

You know what? Yeah it's a dick move. I was glad for the ability to play FFT on my iPad as well as phone so I am a hypocrite but... just buy and play on the system you'll use more. Being frustrated at not having iCloud sync saves between devices is a very new problem and is an excellent problem to have. Oh dear, I can only play this game on ONE of my magical awesome touchscreen gaming devices. Do I choose the one I can put right in my pocket, or do I choose the one that's got the big screen and makes me feel like captain picard? People, get some damn perspective here.

Myself, I'll only ever play it on the iPad, so that's what I'll buy, and I don't think I'll ever give it a second thought. I had FFT on the iPhone only because it came out first and I had no iPad, but when I switched to the pad (yay retinapad!) I never looked back.

Really I can only see this being an issue for maybe 1% of the users (of which I'm sure 99% will now tell me how wrong I am... :P)

I'm not going to base my purchases on some sort of sending a message agenda. If the bad outweights the good, I won't buy it. If it doesn't, I'll buy it, which is the case with TWEWY.

There's a lot of effort in the game itself, and TWEWY is amazing. It's a far cry from a shitty port. Nothing wrong with the price either. In fact, I support anything that helps to break the notion that premium prices are not viable in the iOS market.

The whole blocking of the iPhone version shenanigans was a dick move for sure, but eh, it doesn't invalidate the fun I'm having.

Holy shit! It's out for the Mac App store, it's coming to iOS too?

Wtf, out of nowhere?

Holy shit, it's not fake. I bought the Steam version on the Summer sale but haven't played yet. Will buy and play this version instead, assuming it's a solid port.

I *HATE* this surprises.
It disrupts my gaming plan BIG TIME!!!!

I tried the demo on my 360...honestly...besides the killer presentation and the cool narrator it really didn't got my attention...is that a good game?
Someone who has already played it?

So my opponent cast Freeze on a crucial Champion of mine (Summoner Wars.) I have 2 magic points, but I am unable to remove the freeze. The option to remove freeze (bottom right button on the card) is not showing. I tried this in all phases, including my opponent's turn, to no avail.

Is this a known bug? I am definitely losing this match without the champion (already missed a critical chance at killing the summoner.)

There is a tundra orc champion who makes the unfreeze cost 3 points instead of 2.
Is he in play?

You're confusing the issue. I don't think anyone truly cares that much about the technical limitations regarding the game. Intent is at the heart of what has me pissed off (I wasn't planning on buying the game either way -- I'm still playing on 3GS), and I'm guessing it's the same for most other folks. It's impossible to believe this was anything but intentional on SE's part, and it's crooked dealings. They don't wanna play by the same rules as everyone else, this after being one of the most outspoken publishers regarding piracy and sales drops. It's something that causes a knee-jerk reaction in most folks with a pulse and a conscience to uncontrollably cry out "bullshit!"

You're complicating the matter when it's not that complicated.

To me, it's theft in the same way piracy is theft. No one's going to convince me otherwise.
