I can actually see the value of Square selling their game for $20, as it gets people out of the headspace of every game needing to cost .99¢-free. It is a fully fledged game that deserves a proper pricetag....which should've been $9.99 to $14.99, don't know what they're smoking for it to be worth $20.

This will not change. S-E simply operates a different business model than other iOS developers. Because these games are beloved classics S-E is counting on people being suckers and double-dipping. All the other iOS devs have their money almost entirely in iOS development and they need to price their games competitively. S-E doesn't give a fuck, my guess is it costs very little for them to port existing game to iOS.

Notice that their iOS IP (Chaos Rings) is priced lower.

Oh please. Who downloads a 50MB game over 3G anyway? It's buttslow and with asinine data rates, not a smart move to boot.

Double dipping for the game and for iAP content is the order of the day. I love Spectromancer but splitting the game up like they did sucks, especially when the iPad version is like 30MB.

The IAP for spectromancer are being done this way I imagine because they do not want to alienate PC customers who also paid for those expansions separately from the base game, which is perfectly fair IMO. Everyone gets the extras on the same level as everyone else who got them prior.

The arrogance to me is ignoring universal support for all their games, like they're really banking on people buying their games twice. Someone mentioned you can't even play the iPhone version on iPad, is that even possible?

I feel the same way, I don't mind paying $20 for a proper game like this, however I do mind that they've deliberately gimped the iPhone version so it doesn't work on iPad.

That really sticks in my craw*!

*Whatever a craw is.

I do this all the time, please don't generalize as if there aren't fast, unlimited, 3G providers out there.

Maybe 3 in Europe is unique? :P

I'm fine with the price but I agree that the games should be universal, or at least the iPhone version should work scaled up on the Pad (like FFT did, I used RetinaPad to scale it up and it looked great). Making the game not work at all is just really quite evil.

The 50MB limit isn't about downloading. It's about BUYING. You can't buy an app over 3G that's bigger than 50MB. So it kills all impulse purchases.

Game devs need to take every opportunity they can get. And if someone gets 90% of the way through the process... they find your app, hit the button, put in their password... then it doesn't download? Urgh. What are the odds that customer is going to remember to give the App another shot when they're in WiFi range?

The 50MB limit is critical. You need to stay under it. Or if you're going to go over you might as well blow past it.

Chaos Rings 2 is priced exactly the same as TWEWY though ($18 iPhone, 20 iPad). In the end, port or not they just don't give a fuck period.

Galaxy on fire 2 hd runs poorly on my iPhone 4. Guess I'll play this sucker when the iPhone 5 is out.

The HD edition is pretty much for iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. Anything less is going to struggle. The developer says as much on the description.

It's a shame the regular one wasn't also on sale for players who don't have the latest iDevice.

The older GoF2 has been on sale a few times, it will happen again and most likely in a christmas sale too.

It chugs on an ipad 3, what did you expect :P

i'll be honest GOF2 is not the type of game i would play, but hey at 69p i picked it up. i'll give it a chance maybe it'll hook me.

out of curiosity, ios devs, in what situations is making 2 separate versions of an app vs 'universal' a good move?

ipod touch/iphone have a different aspect ratio from ipad. if you don't want the ipad version of your universal app to have a black border, you make an ipad-only version.

while i have never gamed on an ipad (so i don't know what the borders look like), i think that's a fair reason.

Just bought the new iPad :) what games will show me what this thing is capable of...

Galaxy On Fire II HD, Infinity Blade II, Shadowgun and Real Racing 2 should give you an idea. But also things like Carcassonne and Starbase Orion if you are after a more strategic game.

Real Racing 2 is a good one unless you are bored of the other versions now, it runs at native retina res plus uses anti analysing so the IQ is amazing.

GoF2HD is nice, but can run choppy in the new res.

Riptide GP is ok, runs smooth.

Personally the screen is best for web browsing, it's lovely.

anyone playing mcpixel?

i know this is praise/complaint week for TWEWY....but this game is hilarious. i missed its PC release. this guy is kicking everything!

really? shit thats a bit of a kick to the nuts. genuinely been looking forward to RR3, but i'm just going to give it a pass now.

I can't belive Apple let Square Enix blocking iPhone TWEWY install on iPad (and as far as I read they were the very exact builds).
As far as I know, it's even against their own rules.
Surely other big publishers won't let this pass....right?

It strikes me I read it here and on TA...no website or journalist even dare to mention that.

Or they think they make more money selling $20 games.
Yeah, that's what I meant. They don't give a rat's ass about how everything else is priced on the App Store and just price their offers however they feel it's worth it and profitable. Seems to be working out for them and I have nothing against it, like I said before I think it's good that they're indirectly helping in proving there's a place for more elaborate and expensive games on iOS, even though it obviously works better for them from the exposure (and a bit of lenience) they get due to famous branding and being a big publisher/developer. If a game is more expensive than I think it's worth I simply don't buy it, this is the case to me for now with Final Fantasy Dimensions for example.

There are definitely a few laugh out loud moments in there...though it all does go by a little quickly.

If you ever wished your puzzle-slash-point-n-click games had more handjobs, nutshots, dry humping, nutshots, forcible insertion of objects in both beasts and men, and nutshots then this is the game for you.

There is a lite version as well as a flash demo.

Man, either I really suck at Zookeeper Battle, or I'm extremely unlucky. I can consistently do around a 100 attack, but I keep getting like super-combo'd over and over and die in 1 or 2 rounds.

Damn some people are like ninjas with this matching 3 stuff.

There are no black borders. Devs make one version for iphone ratio/resolution, and another version for ipad ratio/resolution. They can then choose to make it universal or seperate them to try and make more money.

What? I have an iPad 2 and iPod touch 2g and that doesn't happen.

Temple Run is a very popular example. Universal and no black bars on the iPad version.
Same for Zookeeper Battle and every other universal app out there.

The only way you get black bars is if you're using an iPhone/iPod only app on the iPad. But that would mean you're not using a universal app. There's a reason it's called universal.

There's been a few people in this thread (myself included) with this same problem. That's why I got rid of it. Either the game is unbalanced or some people are ridiculously good. I'm leaning towards the former.

If you're going to release two versions because you want to make more money, lower/normal priced iPhone version with smaller file size + higher priced HD universal version really feels like the best way to go with game apps in my eyes. This way you encourage iPhone-only owners to buy the more expensive iPad version even if they don't own an iPad, but may be planning to get one down the line (precisely what happened to me when I bought Sworcery).

But what do I know, devs have access to numbers and maybe the percentage of people who buy the same game twice is that high to warrant two separate versions with neither of them being universal.

Some games don't have borders, some do. A flip side to your very popular example that doesn't have borders here's one that does: Infinity Blade 2.

Not true. We have released universal apps that have black borders for file size and technical reasons.

I'm already bracing myself for black border-age and even more different versions of apps after we get the new longphone.

Ahh. I stand corrected. I've never played Infinity Blade on my iPad, seemed too expensive for what it is to me.

Technical reasons? Would you mind elaborating in what those are? I'm genuinely interested as to why some games/apps can't while many others can.
