The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

IB: Dungeons looks amazing. Especially if it's a Diablo clone with intuitive swipe/touch controls, which is definitely what it looks like. Do we have any idea if these games run at the native res?

I'm gonna check out the new Shmup from the creator of Danmaku Unlimited, but I never liked the control/feel of that game.

I'll still get Adventure Bar Story but kind of wary of how much I'll like it since I don't think the Atelier series is that great.

Astro Story / Dungeon Village where ;_;

Alright! new iPad ordered, now it is time to start building up the backlog. First two are to properly play FFT, and GTAIII!

I was surprised with how easy it was to control GTA 3, at least for me. I'm hoping they bring Vice City though, GTA 3 just seems so dated as a game to really enjoy.

So what's the verdict on Adventure bar story? It's a psp port right?

And yeah... also got a.... niPad ordered.

What are some games that are ipad only or work awesomest on ipad vs iphone?

Kids vs Goblins is really slick! I have played around 6 or 7 missions so far and I am loving it. If you liked Battleheart or Raid Leader then you will like this. I was a bit worried that you could only use two skills at a time but it seems like later in the game you will be able to switch stances with each having two abilities. There are three stances: Attack, Support and Healing. The missions have different objectives like endless, no healing and have to collect a certain amount of crystals before you die, you get to use minions, etc. I know the dev posts here, Bamihap maybe?

edit: You do get to switch stances during battle.

Adventure Bar Story reminds me of Recettear for some reason. I haven't played either (yet), just the premise sounds similar.

Glad you like it!

Try combining spells like sacrifice and shields. There are some hardcore combinations that will test your skills :)

ABS is a PSP port of a game that was never released outside of Japan(I think). It's supposed to be 50-70 hours long. Definitely worth 99 cents. I played for about an hour and a half tonight. So far it's pretty fun.

CrimsonHeart got an update which not only fixed some bugs and allows you free access to the network dungeons at certain points during the week, but somehow improved the frame rate of the game. Seriously, the game runs so smoothly it makes every other aRPG on the AppStore look like dog shit. Puts Zenonia to shame.

lol I remember playing it a bit on psp and quit due to either hard combat or was it expensive pots/gear/ aka require grind... or was it something else? Forgot =/

The sprites were nice though.

Unless new iPad has some magic inside, you will never get games that run at its native resolution, not if you want good graphics.

I should really pick this up, sounds like its a hit and the IAPs are completely unnecessary right?

They make the game a hell of a lot easier, but take out the fun of farming materials from bosses/farming for unique drops/generally playing the game.

You get a few free dungeon tickets at the start of the game (which I recommend you save for later levels, as I used them up all straight away and now I really wish I hadn't. The reason being that one of the bosses is a real piece of work and I could really use a good few runs through a net dungeon to grab slightly better gear quickly) and then for a few hours each week on a Friday - Sunday, the net dungeons are free to enter apparently (this update just went live yesterday, so will see exactly how that works when it comes to Friday).

But yeah, for 99c, even if you just want to see how buttery smooth a Korean aRPG can run on the iPhone, or just to see how Gamevil are going to have to seriously pull their shit together with the next game in the Zenonia series, its definitely worth it.

Put a good 40 odd hours into it so far, then again I am a sucker for wanting to build rare gear obsessively.

Silly question, but hey, whatever.

Can someone please advise me on how to be more ruthless with iOS games? With retail games I'm quite picky about what I buy, play them, complete them, delete them, and that's it. Same with things like XBLA, PSN and WiiWare titles, and it was the same with PSP/DS games too.

But with the iPhone/iPad? Damn. I just feel compelled to play everything, and never want to delete them either. It's annoying as my 16GB iPhone is constantly full, and even my 64GB iPad is starting to fill up now. Agh!

Why don't you want to delete them? The games are backed up on iCloud and you can download them at any time if you want to play them again. I have a ton of games on iOS but I leave them on iCloud until I want to play them because the update cycle on apps and various notifications are annoying as hell to deal with when you have a 64GB iPad, 64GB iPod Touch and a 32GB iPhone. Now with movies backed up by iCloud as well, there's even less reason to keep a lot of things stored on your device if you are running low on storage space on your device.

MotoHeroz is amazing, everyone should get it if the controls are good. Not gonna double dip though, except for when it hits $1.

Criteria For Purchasing Apps

1. Is it retina ready? If no, no buy
2. Is it $8.99/£5.99 or over? If yes, no buy
3. Is it rated under 3 stars? If yes, no buy
4. Is it ugly/does it look tacky? If yes, no buy
5. Is it a clone of another app/game? If yes, no buy
6. Is it universal? If no, don't buy if you want it on iPad too
7. Is it loaded to the rim with IAPs? If yes, don't buy (depends on the person)

That's the technical stuff out of the way. Then you can take a look at the game/app it self and see if it's any fun or useful.

1. Does it look fun?
2. Does it look like it will last longer than an hour?

Do you always have the checklist with you when you're on the road? Can I borrow the checklist?

Why would you avoid games that are $8.99 or more? Sure, "fling-x,y,z" or "run/jump" games are often made by smaller dev teams on a smaller budget, but the more fully-featured games are going to cost more. If MS suddenly announced a wealth of $0.99 card games on XBLA, are you going to stop buying the other stuff? You often get what you pay for...

I think $8.99 is fair. You're pretty much just missing out on the SquareEnix stuff at that price point.

Except Carcassonne. Everyone should buy Carcassonne.

Adventure Bar Story is okay. Controls are worse than I'd feared, the four-way movement is really poor on a virtual d-pad. Some of the menu options are difficult to select too, as if the screen just isn't responding to a tap.

The game itself is nice enough though. You dungeon for food and kill stuff in a pleasant turn-based way, then you go home and cook the food you found in recipes. Couldn't really work them out. Combining random things to cook constantly failed and I got annoyed and stopped in the end. That's how you get EXP though, you don't get it from fighting. Then when/if you've made a bunch of stuff you open the restaurant, earn money, then go buy more ingredients/equipment and dungeon again.

I'm not sure there's a deadline like in Recettear, so you can play at your own pace with no pressure. Assuming it doesn't introduce one.

So yeah, it's okay. It's fun and I like the idea, but the controls really do let it down in places and some odd menu choices make it far more cumbersome than it should be. It'd be nice if there was some way to tell if a recipe was likely to work, too, because at the moment I'm just using all my ingredients up in random (plausible) combinations and I can't get anything to work. It'll probably come with time, ingredients aren't exactly scarce and if there's no time pressure, it won't matter if you wasted any.

TwinSpin and PikPok's Monster Flip came out too, certainly interested in hearing some Monster Flip impressions.

Ugh, dammit, I wish I knew that before I bought it. Four way movement (and the shitty framerate) is the reason I couldn't get into Zenonia 4. I'll give it a try in a few. I really hope the other stuff hooks me in.

It might not be a problem for others, but with the way the movement snaps to tiles, it's really noticeable when you press the wrong direction and really annoying to have to constantly correct it. It's not an action-RPG though, so there's no real penalty for messing up your movement, it's just a minor irritation.

Hmm, thanks - I didn't realise my saves were backed up there though? I sync to my desktop by the way rather than iCloud, so as far as I know if I delete the apps, my save goes with it. Also I thought most games still didn't support iCloud saves?

And not bad, thanks Enco, but that still doesn't really narrow it down too much, part of the problem is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, top quality games on iOS right now.
