The game looks fine but FPS controls just don't feel right on touch screens
Yeah, that's where I'm at, too. I want to like FPS controls on my iPad, but they're just... Not right. Gameloft usually compensates for this by making the auto aim ridiculously high. Still, I just don't think I can do it anymore.

That being said, is NOVA 3 at least a universal app?

Edit: So I just played through the first level of Modern Combat 3 on my iPad. First off, dang, that Regina update looks awesome. The aliasing is too small for the naked eye to see! Secondly, the controls weren't as bad as I remembered. Certainly not good, but at least they're fully customizable. It's like polishing a turd, though. Finally, the production value is surprisingly high. It's cliche as balls, plus I personally hate war shooters, but all signs point to me possibly enjoying NOVA 3. I have a stupid amount of iTunes money, so I guess I'll bite and let you guys know how it is.

all big gameloft titles have been universal for the last few releases now, saying that time to buy nova 3 as I loved the first one but found the second one annoying, this should hopefully be good.

Anyone want me to try and airplay it over twitch.tv? I did read that it has an airplay bug, will know in about 10 minutes.

By the way, I highly recommend Luxor Evolved, especially considering it's only 99 cents right now. It's basically Zuma, but with Asteroid/Tron type graphics, and a whole bunch of powerups and techno music. Very fun.

So grabbing Luxor Evolved once I fix my credit card issues, looks excellent.

How are the controls on this one? It'd be nice to have on my phone but I might just grab it on Steam if it doesn't play great on iOS

It works pretty well. There are a few control schemes but I just played the default. You just slide it with the touch screen and then touch the screen to shoot the puzzle piece.

A better example than Lumines is that it reminds me of the Space Invaders remakes and Geometry Wars. It's a pretty cool way of re-imagining Luxor.

It was only $0.99 so it was worth a download. I'm happy with the purchase.

The only thing is that it's probably much better on the iPad than the iPad Touch/Phone because of the larger puzzle pieces and bigger screen. But that can be said with most ios games.

One of our GAFers couldn't use this code for Lost Winds as it's US only.

I'll just leave this right here....

NARAWXHW3R6Y

Who was it? I still have Canada-only codes.

Also, why is Ravenmark never on sale, I keep recommending it to people based on my lite-impressions and what other people said (because it's awesome), but haven't gotten around to buying the full game yet... I'm a sales-whore :(

For real? Is there a release-date?

PS: I snagged four Starbucks codes for LostWinds but I guess since giveaways are frowned upon in here now I'll just throw them in the garbage? Is that how this thread now works?

yeah it was on their twitter, but no release date. so glad this and kingdom rush are coming to iphone/ipod!

When does NOVA 3 drop? I want to give it a whirl before I pass out for the night.

Why would it be worse on ipad 3?
I have a 4S, iPad 3 and iPad 2. I'm definitely doing comparison tests tomorrow.

Why would it be worse on ipad 3?
Dat resolution, same CPU as iPad 2 apart from some extra graphical push which is used mostly to powerthescreen,it's amid of the new iPad suffering and gameloft not using A5X optimizes code?maybe.

Edit, wow iPad spell check in full force tonight

Picked up Zombies, Run! today since it is biking season again. Pretty cool. Really drives you to keep going. I don't like that it wont use a podcast but i guess that makes sense. Just have to put together a zombie mix since the Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band wasn't cutting it.

Been playing New Star Soccer like crazy recently. Best dollar I've ever spent on the iPad. Are there any other great games that aren't well known that I need to play?

My goodness this is going to take a long time to load.

We made a promise in the early days of release that we'd not do a sale for the sake of luring in casuals in for easy money, and end up pissing on the goodwill of those who bought in at $4.99.

Possibly not the smartest thing to do business-wise, but carrying out a sale hasn't necessarily worked out for every dev. A lot of it has to do with timing, like with Zach Gage's recent sale for SpellTower. I think that was pretty successful, but he was already riding a wave of awareness due to the Apple feature.

A junior "we"? I am confused.

But thanks for the fast feedback, I was thinking something like that. (Just like Carcassonne -shakes evil fist-) I'll just buy it in a weak minute anyway, I know myself too well. :(

Ravenmark is worth well more than $5. Stop being a dollar whore. You're degrading yourself for chump change.

I know dude, I know... iOS gaming brings out the worst in me. It makes me realize all games are cheap, so I buy all of them but only play like 10% of them because there are more games than hours of my time :(

We, as in the team at Witching Hour. It was a collective decision. :)

Sent you a PM, btw.

Dude, you... you... you're the man, man. I mean, the REAL man, man. Thank you so much lol, was not expecting that. I probably would've bought it anyway, now knowing there will never be a sale, but now... well. Thanks so much again for the code.

Downloaded on device 1 (iPad 3). Time to give NOVA 3 a whirl.

Report back ASAP about performance please.
And, while we're at it, if resolution is the biggest problem for demanding games running on the iPad 3, maybe they could develop games like these using an inferior resolution and making the new iPad upscale it to the native res, or at least give the user this option.

As one of those early adopters who routinely jumps in head first at full price, let me say that I don't mind at all when games I enjoy go on sale after I've paid full price. On the contrary if it means it brings more people to the game/developers I love, more power to them. In fact, I wish some companies like Cave would dig a little deeper in their sales, and I've bought most of their apps (except the piecemeal Espgaludas) at or near full price. I'd much rather see the apps I love on more devices. The less people playing Jetpack Joyride (come at me, bro) and Angry Birds the better.

There might be an argument for feeling pissed on if a title were to drop from $17.99 to $0.99 the day after I bought it, but even then as long as I enjoy the app, big deal. Anyone who feels pissed on or even slighted after a drop from $4.99 to $1.99 is someone you really can't take seriously. At the same time, I wouldn't be too concerned with anyone who is interested in an app but depriving themselves over 2 or 3 bucks.

Edit: And full disclosure, I haven't heard of Ravenmark and please don't come at me, bro.

I'd suggest putting something to that effect in the app description (see Starbase Orion) ... if people know that is a business/strategy decision they are more likely to buy than wish list it and forget about it.

my 2 cents

Holy SHIT. So far, this game is absolutely gorgeous. The framerate certainly dips at points, but no more than of GameLoft's other FPS titles. But, wow. It looks like a launch 360 title. I could absolutely mistake this for a modern console game.

Also, it's FAR more Crysis 2 than Halo this time. Art, animations, style - everything. The controls are definitely the tightest they've been on a GameLoft FPS, but they're still touch screen controls, so you should know what you're getting into. You can customize the virtual buttons by moving them around (but not resizing), except for the reload button, which stay irritatingly at the top.

Rag doll physics actually exist in this game, which I think is a first for GameLoft. You have the ability to Force push enemies down, and they don't fall with a predetermined animation - they physically react to the environments (it seems). Sometimes, they don't even fall, and just stumble.

The voiceovers are much better and less cheesy, too. Still cheesy, though.

But DAMN it looks amazing on an iPad 3. The framerate isn't solid, but it generally stays t or above 30, and hasn't dipped to anything insufferable yet. Geometry is complex, and most textures are razor sharp on the retina screen. It's probably the nicest looking game I've played so far on the iPad.

I'm going to now try it on my 4S, and I'll check the thread in a few minutes. If there's anything specific you want me to check for, let me know. So far, though, if you enjoyed any GameLoft FPS in the past, there's no reason not to grab this.

That's all I'm waiting for. How it works with the smaller screen, if it looks just as well, how the framerate/controls are.

I wish more people thought like you, but the iOS market is dark and full of terrors.

Some say that as long as you've had a long enough "cooling-off" period between your launch and the sale period, people won't get super pissed. Thing is, how long is "long enough"? Both GTA3 and more recently Crow went from $4.99 to $2.99 in one week, with 99c following not long after. I remember a pretty big outcry from not a few people in those cases.

I'd suggest putting something to that effect in the app description (see Starbase Orion) ... if people know that is a business/strategy decision they are more likely to buy than wish list it and forget about it.

I didn't know this! Thanks for the tip.

I don't think we would be able to do this, though. Ravenmark isn't complete yet - we have a few more campaigns to add to the game. We were originally hoping to give these away as free updates, but with the amount of work being poured into each campaign and our tight cashflow situation, we're more or less decided on releasing these campaigns as IAP in order to support ourselves. So to call it guaranteed pricing would amount to a "bait-and-switch" - folks thinking they've paid $4.99 for the whole game and then discovering an IAP "pay-wall" halfway through.

Yeah, I know it has to handle a higher resolution but the Ipad 3 has a much stronger GPU in it than the Ipad 2. A stronger GPU should be more important than a CPU for gaming purposes.

I think you are right that Shameloft just horribly optimized the game for Ipad 3, or didn't optimize at all. I see no reason why it should perform worse and have less effects on screen.

Ok, so now played a bit on the iPhone 4S. It does have additional effects the iPad 3 does not. Or, at least one - depth of field blurring. And it looks really nice, too.

Other than that, subtle differences are slightly longer load times on the 4S, and just a slight bit more of texture-loading framerate drop. It seems like it plays at the same framerate, overall.

And then, of course, the final drawback from the iPhone version is the smaller screen, which leads to harder-to-manage controls. But if you've gotten used to it before with a GameLoft FPS, this will definitely feel better than those other games.

Up next, I'm playtesting it on an iPad 2. Let me know if there's anything you guys want me to check or try. I'm also collecting a few comparison screenshots. I just have to figure out how to upload them directly from my devices, so let me know if you know how to do that, anyone.
