The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Hmm, my third post got lost. Anyway, iPad 2 impressions and updated comparison:

The iPad 2 runs almost identically to the iPhone 4S. It seems to have all the same effects as the 4S version, and the ever-so-slightly lower framerate dips.

Now, for the bad news for iPad 3 owners. There are a lot more effects cut than I thought. First off, the world seems to be lit just a little brighter, (this could be my screen) but it seems like there's less visual contrast. The screenshots will tell that tale. But other effects, like heat coming off the gun and distorting your visuals, are gone. It's a shame, because they look fantastic on the iPad 2 and 4S.

Personally, I'd like the option to try and run the game with effects on on my iPad 3, just to see how big of a hit it really takes. Either that, or run it at a lower resolution that can handle it.

Still, the game is great on all three devices I tested it on, and it's universal. Any other questions?

Wow that is rough for us iPad 3 owners. Thankfully I don't like consolelikes for the most part and the games I love (Carc, Nightfall) actually do benefit from the higher res without any hit.

How's NOVA 3's framerate on older ios devices? The requirements says that it can be played on 3GS and 4G. Anybody playing the game on those devices? How is it?

Saw a few TouchArcade posts saying it's laggy on older devices, as expected. Nova 2 (multiplayer) has no significant framerate issues but doesn't feel super-smooth though and considering Gameloft's tendency for poor optimization, I'm expecting poor performance on sub-A5 devices.

Yeah, that's right. It's been awhile since I played NOVA 2 and the framerate wasn't so great. I can't imagine NOVA 3 being any better even though it's on the Unreal engine.

I may pass for now then. Might as well pick up the new KoF game.

How is Nightfall? I've been thinking about adding it into my rotation.

It is extremely confusing when you begin to play it - I mean extremely confusing - but once you get a handle of the sequence of events and turns it is very enjoyable. A big issue, for me, is that the app doesn't allow you to see all of the cards you have gained, so selecting cards becomes a little memory based.

Next iPad gets BOTH a new CPU and a new GPU architecture.

I've been recommending all fence sitters to buy the next iteration.

Imho 2012 iPad is not a good buy =/
The retina screen is so good, though! But I will admit, I'm having a hard time letting go of my iPad 2...

Depends on what you want. It's an iPad 2 with four times the screen-resolution, with no real performance penalty (made up for by the increase in hardware specs). I waited for this version since the original iPad was released, and am incredibly happy with it. And with the iPad 2 and iPad 3 having therefore very similar specs, that's two generations that developers can make the most of fairly reliably. So when the new one comes, iPad 2 and 3 will remain well supported for a long time.

But I am not looking to my iPad for high-performance gaming. If that's what you want, then I'd say wait for the next one. I think there's room for the same screen brightness at 20% the power consumption, which leaves some good room for CPU and GPU enhancements (I expect a bit more CPU next time as that's becoming a bottleneck here and there). So yes, there's ample room for a big upgrade next time.

However, the iPad 3 is definitely a good buy. That screen is nothing short of breathtaking, and it can handle it without slowing down vs the iPad 2. That in itself is a major upgrade, and really worth it.

Someone asked earlier: photos can be uploaded/hosted online directly from an iOS device with an app like Photobucket, eliminating the need to transfer it to a PC first (assuming it's not being done automatically with photo stream.)

I don't think it's that bad, the retina screen is beautiful for most apps but games are getting the short stick with power, i'll trade/sell it towards a 4g ipad though no questions.

I've been using "Picup", an extremely lightweight imgur uploader.

The new iPad has to calculate four times the pixels with just twice the graphics performance, yet the disparity can be handled more gracefully even in high-end games with smarter optimizations and trade-offs.

I think the current lack of an API push for GPGPU is more responsible for apparent bottlenecks in apps like iPhoto and HDR compositing in the camera than a lack of CPU performance. Apple themselves defined OpenCL, so this problem should be solved in the near future.

Gene Effect mission 18 and 19.

THAT GRAPHIC!!!!

Devs, whoever you are, Giger will be proud of you.

And I'm in heaven.

Am I the only one playing this?

I could use some discussion about getting those damn Artifacts and their location...
Because I'm so sucked in the story that when I fire up the game I cannot resist and I go on and do not replay past levels in search for those damn upgrades!
I spent a solid hour yesterday in mission 18 trying to enter a place I'm SURE it hides something, without success.
I managed to get 5 or 6 of them but unfortunately they are from different techs so I cannot upgrade.

Can someone with the game update and give impressions? I was thinking of buying it but then the update with broken controls happened.

Edit: Frederic - Resurrection of Music is 0.99 right now until sunday (HD version too, it's not universal unfortunately). Looks very interesting and I remember some good impressions in the thread. Bought, I'll play it later today.

Both Picup and the Photobucket app scale images down if they're too large. :/

After using the TouchArcade app for a day or two I am really impressed with the Hot New Games section. I'm guessing it uses a combination of forum posts, article comments and clicks to determine ranking but it works great. Definetly a step in the right direction for TA.

I think in the case of picup, that's an imgur-imposed limitation. The app doesn't do any scaling before the upload. I guess it's the same reason the PC screenshot thread says not to use imgur at all.

There must be a simple FTP uploader app out there (assuming such a thing doesn't run afoul of App Store policy). If not, I'd be tempted to learn iOS dev to try making one...

Which 2012 iPad? The new one or the new new one in october?

There were the same type of rumors last year and they obviously were wrong. There is no way that Apple is going to a) release a new 9.7" iPad 6 months after the new iPad because they just won't have a 6 month product cycle, and b) release said new iPad at basically the same time they launch the newest iPhone model. They are going to want the buzz in October to be all about the true successor to the iPhone 4. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the fall a budget "iPad Mini" was launched though.

How does NOVA 3 runs at the A4 devices? For some bizarre reason I'm really carving "retro" hardware and I'm considering an OG iPad.
Yeah, I know it has to handle a higher resolution but the Ipad 3 has a much stronger GPU in it than the Ipad 2. A stronger GPU should be more important than a CPU for gaming purposes.
Two times stronger GPU, but four times the resolution.

Am I the only one who hopes we don't get a true iPhone 5? The design on the 4/4S is absolutely perfect IMO, and I'd really hate to see it change. The only thing I'd want from them is 4G, but the 4S - hardware specs and all - should stick around for another year.

Same with the iPad 3. I'd like to see battery life improve, and maybe a decrease on weight and max temperature of the device. But the design, screen, and current tech specs are perfect.

I just tried the first level on my 4g touch, it plays but it's frame rate is low and all over the place and while impressive the textures are low in areas, also no bump map or much light from sources.

There are new rumors of a 10" iPad in the fall.

No. I want an iPhone 5 so bad, my 4 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and it would be cool as fuck to get a piece of hardware approaching Vita levels of power. Gimme dose graffiks!

I know there are, but what is the point of a 10" model when the current one is already 9.7". A smaller budget iPad to compete with the Kindle Fire in size and price point makes sense, but to me at least making a larger iPad, especially 6 months after they launched the new 9.7" model doesn't make sense, and really doesn't seem to be in line with the way Apple operates.

Hey, I admitted its bizarre. I don't want a New iPad or an iPad 2. I want an OG iPad. :)

Where's my cheap 7'' iPad? It was heavily rumored early this year.
How much are you willing to pay? My dad has a 16gb WiFi iPad 1, and I've been trying to convince him to upgrade. (if you're serious, PM me so we don't clog up the thread).

You know, the only two regrets I have about the iPad 3 are how hot it gets, and how the battery takes much longer to charge.

I'm still rockin my OG iPad. It plays most stuff well enough. Really the only feature we're missing around our house is the camera.

How is iPad 2 the dominant device when it comes to this? I don't get it.

I try to buy one locally since I had bad experience with buying things internationally. A reliable shipping method + taxes would make your offer too expensive. Thanks for the offer, though.

Despite a lack of blur and some distortion effects, it looks MUCH nicer on the iPad 3, and runs a bit better, too. Faster load times, too.

Definitely doesn't take that long to charge, nor does it get unacceptably hot. Like everything you read on a message board those are gross exaggerations. the iPad 3 is a great device. Yes, the next one will be better, obviously. And then the one after that, and after that.

I have absolutely zero complaints with my recently received iPad 3. bit surprised to see a few people in here down on it.

OG iPad owner here too. I still love it and use it daily, my biggest complaint is how sluggish it seems now. It might just be that I am used to my 4s, but it feels slow to me.

I don't know what you're talking about. I literally just played NOVA 3 on both my iPad 2 and iPad 3 for the same duration, same brightness settings. The iPad 3 got warm, while the iPad 2 stayed cool. It's absolutely noticeably different, compared to the iPad 2. My friends' iPad 3s heat up, as well. Now it's not unbearable, or burn your hand or anything, but it's definitely there.

As for charging the battery, I haven't done a straight-up comparison between the 2 and 3, but I can tell you I charge them both everyday. The 2 charges in probably 50-60% of the time it takes to charge the 3, which makes sense since the 3 has a MUCH larger battery than the 2. (Which is one of the reasons why it's a bit thicker and heavier than the 2, as well - another minor bummer).

I love my iPad 3 more than any device I own. It's, quite frankly, the best purchase I've ever made. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have faults, though.

Absolutely. Coming off the iPad 2, the increased iPad 3 charge time is more than enough to be noticable, and occasionally has been a little annoying. It also gets considerably warmer, and depending on whether you like holding a warm or cold device, this could be annoying too. Depends on your usage I guess - if you're on auto-brightness and use it for hours in a well-lit environment, it will get warm, and if you have sweaty hands, this simply isn't as nice as holding the iPad 2, which was cool almost permanently.

Considering the main reason for the massive battery increase is due to the brighter backlight requirements, it's quite clear that the iPad 3 is a significant step backwards in terms of efficiency.

Wait because of shoddy programming? Ipad 3 will be the baseline for all future retina based games. There is a lot more than gaming to the device which makes use of the Retina screen.

Resolutions are right but can't say they uploaded without loss since they've been subject to JPEG compression. Good enough to get the point across though - what are you using to upload?

The missing effects on the iPad 3rd gen are pretty obvious, especially in that cockpit shot.
