Actually, you're using curse words as nouns in a simile structure.

I could never play Swordigo. Platformer with a v-pad :shudder:

It's late and I'm sick, so I don't give a shit, but you're right. I figured someone would criticize the fact that I used a hashtag first.

And the controls feel really great in Swordigo. Not shit like 99% of the on-screen d-pad games. And it's really only a two-way d-pad. And it's free - why not check it out?

so swordingo is pretty much zelda? the controls are pretty solid though so ill keep playing it

btw does spellsword control like this? if it does ill buy it, heard good things about it

I have one last DreamWorks Dragons: TapDragonDrop code. Quote this post and the app icon to try for it. First in, first served, as ever.

You guys don't even try to be subtle... =P

... did anyone notice that they mispelled Romero's name in the Wolfenstein 3D credits?
Lol. I wonder if that's in the original game.

So what's the deal with this Swordigo? If it was so great, why did it take a free day to get downloads? I guess I'll find out for myself! Either way, tomorrow is gonna be filled with some serious Ascension and NOVA.

Don't ask me how, but I somehow got my mom, dad, brother, and sister hooked on Ascension, so now I just have to convince them to grab another expansion!

Also, Flunkie/Astro, does the majority of GAF have the TTR expansions? I bought them, but have no one to play with. See you in the BG thread tomorrow.

I know I don't, because I don't play it enough (same with Ascension) for it to make sense for me. But there's a spreadsheet that keeps track of all that here.

I think many people do. Me and Ray.Spencer for sure. I'm down -- I like the game a lot but it falls out of mind sometimes because the notifications disappear.

(Presume you mean TTR Pocket, which is async while TTR iPad is not.)

My lord, that's a beautiful spreadsheet. I'll get added tomorrow!

Is it you, Astro, or both of you that are forever obsessed with Carc? I've honestly never felt the immense draw that some of you guys have for it. Here's to hoping I can get on that bandwagon, though.

Edit: Yeah, TTR Pocket. They should really just update that to be a universal app, since no one's buying the iPad version after getting the iPhone version fo free.

It's everyone in the iOS boardgame thread, really. You're like "eeeeh 10 bucks is so expensive", then you buy it and you're like "wait, you're telling me I bought this only NOW and not earlier?!?"

Carc is the only iOS board-/card game that has had staying power with me. I'm pretty addicted, you might say. It's still the best on the system, imo.

I am thinking of getting Tigris & Euphrates, though. I thought I'd like Catan but I don't really get it.

It definitely is; everyone's still playing catch up. (Actually Ascension/Nightfall is the only one even doing that, everyone else is way behind those two though there are still a lot of good games there. I hope Neuroshima Hex will be a contender when it gets its async update. That game is fantastic for the medium.

T&E has wonderful mechanics, the implementation is very barebones though. It has async, but is one of those games that doesn't show you what each person did it's just here's the board now.

I find Carc an absolute bore, waste of money. I've also played the physical version with expansions and cannot stand it. (Incase some think I don't understand the game I was consistently winning by large margins, just didn't find it enjoyable).

That makes me so sad I can't even formulate a complete response. It's so mechanically superior to every game on iOS (outside of maybe T&E) and it's a wonderful experience learning basic strategy from a light Euro to a super cutthroat game. Then there's the diplomacy element of 3-4p games, not to mention the strategy introduced by the large meeples which also plays into the diplomacy element. Never mind that the implementation is also head & shoulders the best of any digital board game ever. dsfdf though, sometimes certain games just rub people the wrong way!

My big brother AstroLad would kick your ass in Carcassonne, real talk bruh.

Also: Carc is one of those games that benefits greatly from automated bookkeeping. The game implementation actually makes the game better.

I've no doubt that, I was merely stating that it wasn't a matter that I was inferior to the people I was playing against (who were likely terrible) and was due to a misunderstanding of the game mechanics.

I've played probably over 40 games on me iPhone/iPad, but still have similar opinions about Carc.

I feel like I either don't know how to strategize, or the game is just insanely simple and random.

Anyway, I'm two shades away from passing out. See y'all tomorrow.

I think to truly enjoy it you have to play with people who know what they're doing. Fighting over control of fields and cities, screwing other players by knowing which tiles will make their efforts impossible to complete, etc. If the people you're playing with don't know much in the way of strategy you're just laying tiles down together.

Or hey maybe it's just not the game for you, I dunno.

Flight unlimited is on sale for 99 cents. It's a flight simulator. Dunno how good it is, I am downloading it right now.

Does anyone have X-plane for ipad? How is it? Any good?

Edit: flight unlimited sucks, don't bother.

If you don't understand how fields work and don't grasp the ways to play the game aggressively the game will feel super-simple. Honestly, I learned a TON about the intricacies of the game playing random 2-player online pick-up games.

When my opponents tried to horn in on my building first turn it was like a bulb lit up. Oh, that's how you win this game.

X-Plane was one of the first apps I ever bought, back when the app store was just a baby. I remember really enjoying it back then, but I'm almost positive I'm remembering it better than it is. Maybe I'll buy the new one, though.

Thats exactly where I am with the game. I never fully got it, and it seems overly simple with no real strategy, yet I continue to get stomped. I wanna like Carc - I mean, I bought the dang thing - it just doesn't want to click with me. Someone should teach me strategy in a 2P game.

Not for the iPhone, but Halfbrick have just released Jetpack Joyride... on Facebook!

549251_10150777945417064_703322063_9874198_87831408_n.jpg

It's the whole game you know and love, but now you can fly against your Facebook mates! It's actually quite awesome how exact it is from the iPhone version, complete with all the Gadgets and stuff!

Check it out here: https://apps.facebook.com/jetpackjoyride/

It'd be great if you could check it out, even if you've donwloaded the iPhone version. Any feedback would be appreciated, we're trying out a ton of stuff with this release :)

Thumbs up from me too for Swordigo. Don't let you be deceived by the looks because its really fun.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised by the general lack of enthusiasm here within this thread when the game went free.

so swordingo is pretty much zelda? the controls are pretty solid though so ill keep playing it

Pretty much, but it's a very different game. It's more along the lines of Super Crate Box. It's an addictive, excellent game.

Swordigo is indeed a very good game. It's damn ugly but the actual design of the areas is high quality and it really does have the feel of the old 8-bit adventure games down to a tee. It's lengthy, the controls are absolutely perfect (since you can customise them 100%) and it is addictive. Everyone needs to be playing it, and waaaaaay more people should have paid for it.

But..... my backlog!

..oh, OK then. Since you asked nicely.

has anyone tried North & South yet?

http://appshopper.com/games/the-bluecoats-north-vs-south-2

http://appshopper.com/games/the-bluecoats-north-vs-south

have put it in appshopper wishlist for now, but would be a fun summer game if it was good.
That came out of nowhere for me. The only 'official' remake I knew about is this one (still upcoming):

http://www.north-and-south.com/

Maybe the one from Microids (just released) is based on the comic book license rather than on the classic game (even though they say "This is a remastered version of the game that was released in 1990" in the App Store product description)? Curious which will be better.

Holy shit North & South!
One of the best Amiga games ever, back then Infogrames were boss!
I played this for countless hours and for MONTHS against my brother kicking his ass playing as corporal vs captain :D

Does the iOS version features multiplayer? Damn, talk about nostalgia... 'xcept this game was goooood.
edit: btw, description is wrong, the game came out in '89 I'm sure of this since we played it a LOT during Christmas the year before the Mondiali di Calcio Italia '90.

Actually, my last post has been bouncing around in my head for a while so I'd like to express a further opinion: the App Store is an unfairly uneven marketplace. Yes, it's a place where Angry Birds or Tiny Wings can make an absolute killing with casual games for a mass audience, but a lot of it is down to luck as well as eye catching visual design and the inclusion of a bird theme.

But by the same token, dozens of really high quality, lengthy 'real' games seem to be falling by the wayside lately. Experiences that gamers like us would love, but which get lost in the shuffle too often, resulting in bad sales numbers and devs not making what they should be.

What I worry is that it's par for the course now to wait for a sale or free. And yes, the devs are choosing to put their games on sale but I think about it like this: if I pay full price, the developer gets more money. By waiting for a sale I'm saving maybe a couple of quid, but if more people buy games at full price then the difference to developers, especially struggling indie devs, would be significant.

Personally, I think that it's too common to wait for sales and codes and to have this massive glut of games that remain unplayed on your accounts. Games that you will likely never play, since next month you'll get 20 more. Instead, I'm trying to change my habits so that I buy mostly games that I want to play now, and if possible I'll buy them at full price.

I know the flipside of the argument - we don't have infinite money / devs know what they're getting in for when they make a game free / fuck you, it's my life etc. But really, I think it's important to pay the full price of what a game is worth sometimes. It makes you value the game more and you'll most likely play it more fully (maybe even complete it!), and most importantly, the people that stuggled and sweated to bring you the game will receive just compensation for their efforts, and this means a lot to me.

Anyway, this is just my two penneth which is a gut reaction to the near constant sale and code begging that you see on iOS. I am sure many will disagree, and if so I apologise.

I caved and got nova 3. Doesnt seem to run too bad on new ipad. Dont know what effects im missing, but the graphics are really good.

lack of ambient glow of sorts, motion blur in certain places, depth of field in cut scenes, particle effects (quite a lot of them are missing), reflective map from certain scenes and dynamic shadows, also oddly some lens flare effects but its one minor thing.

I am going to say I think I might cull game purchases and try to get through what I have.

Ever since learning about the IOS5 data/cache/magazine wipe; I've realised I need space and I have a shit tonne of games that just sit there unplayed cluttering it up.

so.

yeah.

it's impossible to cull

Nicely done! Only complaint thus far is that mouse clicking is not quite as precise.. multiple lasers at the top and bottom of the screen = a killer. :(

So I gave it a go, and you were right. It isn't really that fast-paced so the v-pad works pretty well!
