The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

This is kind of interesting considering all the recent ripoffs that have been miring the iOS gaming scene. I guess some company completely ripped off Triple Town (which I am still totally addicted to, Wario):

However, replace "saplings" with "bushes", "tents" with "houses" and "yetis" with "bears". What do you get? Something that would look a lot like independent developer Spry Fox's Triple Town, only with much improved 3D graphics.
but rather than just bitching about it, the guys behind Triple Town filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.
Ah, crap. Why'd they do that? Do they or their lawyers have any idea what copyright infringement is? I'll tell you what it's not:
  • It's not entering into an NDA, then using the information obtained to create a clone. That's breach of contract (assuming the NDA is halfway decently crafted.)
  • It's also not using the same game mechanics as another game. That's patent infringement (assuming the game mechanics were patented.)

And as a side note, from my amateur legal scholar perspective, that has got to be one of the worst complaints from an actual lawyer I've ever read.
  • Reads like they just got their first thesaurus. (Reminds me of an example of my ConLaw professor gave of a student saying Reagan and Gorbachev had an "assignation.")
  • "LOLApps copied the overall plot, theme, mood, setting, pace, characters, and sequence of Triple Town." is factually incorrect by their own complaint, seeing as they repeatedly note that LOLApps changed the plot, theme, setting, and characters.
  • The trademark portion is laughable because the stylized fonts are nothing if not markedly dissimilar instead of markedly similar as claimed.
  • The NDA SpryFox relied on was 6Waves' own, and specifically allows that 6Waves can use the information it receives to develop it's own works. (i.e., there goes the chances of the NDA being halfway decently crafted to SpryFox's perspective.)
It should be interesting to see how this plays out and if it has any ripple effects on all the reskinned games everyone seems to be making.
Probably not.

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land.
Yay or nay?

Fucking nay with the fury of a thousand exploding kittens.

Terrible, terrible game. The controls work when they want. Taps don't register the way they should, so you end up mashing at the screen trying to get any sort of response that the game actually exists.

The action consists of standing inches away from your enemy, aiming a gun at their head and missing every shot. Then, they have their turn and also miss every shot. And so on. I spent 15 minutes going through this. If it was just me missing, I'd assume some error on my part. However, the enemies missing every time mean there is just something wrong.

I really, really wanted to like this but it is fundamentally and functionally broken. Stay away until it's fixed.

Hmmm
Saved my money then

I heard it plays fine on the iPad.

Anybody have any tips to get some higher scores in Bug Princess? There doesn't seem to be much to do other than die less. Does having it on a harder difficulty increase the score counter quicker? I was just trying to reach some of the point achievements and they seem really high compared to what I clear with.

I tested it on an iPad 2. The controls need serious fixing before I could recommend it to anybody, and I'm genetically predisposed to liking turn-based strategy games and Lovecraftian themes. And regardless of what device it's tested on, there is no excuse for an intro level having you stare at repeated misses (even when standing one square away from a unit!) for 15 minutes.

As it stands now, it's simply an infuriating mess of a game. Like it was rushed out the door or something, and they expect to patch it up as it goes along. The fact that it had a next day patch to fix game crashing bugs a day later supports my theory.

It has the foundation of a good game. It's just not one right now.

Die less in higher difficulties! ;)
The end of level bonus is much higher on extreme and you get a MASSIVE score boost for every life left after clearing the game!
Another method for higher scoring: When you kill a big bug, all bullets on the screen are cancelled, but this is very risky...

In Bug Princess you do get higher scores for higher difficulty so choose the hardest one you can handle. Original Mode is really basic and pretty much amounts to killing everything + dodging everything. Maniac mode is more like Dodonpachi chaining where your counter goes up as long as you are hitting an enemy. I'm working on getting better at Bug Princess right now too, I'm not very good at any of the cave games, besides maybe DDP smartphone mode. I have decent scores on there, but still nowhere near the top. If you like the grazing mechanic in DDP smartphone, you'll love Shogun btw.

Graphics look pretty shitty but I love Puzzle Quest. I'll set a notification up on AppShopper.

Wait, you're dismissing a "slot machine RPG" because of shitty graphics? I played through it obsessively when it came out - I don't remember what the price was, but I DO remember saying that it was worth it.

For anyone else still wondering about Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land - AppSpy has a decent review up of it @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNTfWakuSok

Pretty much exactly what I said, though they equate "50/50 chance of the game recognizing your inputs" as "old-school mentality and not for a broad audience."

New, old, it doesn't matter. If your controls don't work, your game isn't playable. Check the initial battle to see the wonderful world of constant missing in action too.

Finally got around to picking up Elder Sign: Omens the other day. At first I thought, "WTF did I just pay seven bucks for a fancy version of Yahtzee?" After a few plays it's growing on me quick, though. I won my first game last night, so now I love it. ;)

Once again very annoyed that it's not a universal app, though. And it's not like the iPhone version is under 20 MB (it's 140 MB on both platforms).

Tobe's Hookshot Escape, an endless climber, is coming out at some point.

Here's a Flash game of an older version:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/570265

It's made by the people who did Tobe's Vertical Adventure which is on Xbox Live Indies and Steam.

"Tobe & Friends Hookshot Escape"

A vertical/endless platformer. Will be keeping an eye on that.

There's a demo in case anyone is interested.

Yeah, ES:O is a pretty decent adaptation of a really fun dice game - the tagline I give my friends to try it is "it's like Arkham Horror with half the rules and takes half as long to play". The biggest problem I had with the physical game was how unbelievably vague the rulebook is. The biggest problem I have with the iOS version is the fact that they only let you fight one ancient one.

I'm trying to copy my Mage Gauntlet save from iPhone to iPad, but when I go to the file sharing in iTunes, the only files showing up are feint_offline_350412 and a folder called webui. Ther is no save.dat file. I tried copying the files that are there over to the iPad, but that didn't copy my save over. Any suggestions?

Any tips for the final super fast purple claw patterns on the last boss in Shogun? I hope is game sells well, I died on the last boss and still got a top ten score for full run. There are only three people on the leaderboard for the final level.

Shogun is ok. I see what they're attempting to do. But, I just feel like if I'm going to invest a few minutes in playing a shmup, that time is better served playing one of the Cave titles.

I love my iCade:

Buttons are a little loud to use at work for long sessions unfortunately but I'm going to take it home in a few days anyway.

Ah, you went for the "lesser" cab design? Still looks alright, imo. If the iPad 3 is still the same form factor and somewhat compatible, I guess I'll just have to get one (or buy a cheap iPad 2). I imagine the iCade support along with all the synth-stuff would make it worthwhile.

Yeah I didn't have a choice, this was the only style they sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and even Thinkgeek have moved to this style too and can't supply the retro cabinet anymore

I might reskin it one day if I can be arsed but it doesn't look bad in real life anyway.

I'd be interested in any impressions anyone has of Dark Incursion. On a cursory glace it looks like a GBA-era castlevania, and those were pretty awesome.

I've just recently got into iOS gaming, but I'm a little confused about purchasing games for both an iPhone and a iPad - do I need to by two copies of the same game, or do I only have to buy one copy to play it on both? Or is there two distinct versions of the games due to the resolution difference?

Doesn't it...move around when you play? I don't have one, I'm trying to understand how I would seemingly play it without putting it in my lap to keep it still?

Some games have two versions, like Plants Vs. Zombies, one for iPhone/iPod Touch and an HD version for iPad. And some are Universal, which means, once you buy it, it will both in any iOS device.

You will know when an app is universal when it has a + in the Buy/Free button.

It is worth noting that an iPad will run iPhone apps as long it is not for communication (like Whatsapp). There's a Jailbreak program that enables retina display on iPads, which means they run without loking like puke. Of course, that's as long as the app itself has retina support...
