I'm the exact opposite. With no chance for failure, there's no pressure. I like the challenge, I guess.

Weird, I see the risk of 'failing out' of a Picross level or running out of hints as less of a challenge than filling out some 25x25 monster all the way in and realizing you made a mistake in the first few moves.

In other words, I consider the latter way more of a failure than being told I screwed up. If that makes sense.

That makes sense, I never thought about it that way. The way you describe it, that sounds like too much pressure. Lol.

I guess I'm just used to playing it the Nintendo way, which is what Crosslogic emulates.

iOS gaming is funny.

It goes through a short phase where we get a load of amazing games in the span of a week or two then it goes through a long phase where we get a load of crap.

Right now we're in the crap phase.

Just completed Squids, but I noticed there's an empty hat slot now after the Santa one for scouts. Anyone know where to grab it?

The developer also told me there's gonna be an update within a week so maybe it'll crop up then.

Such a great game -- perfectly suited and tailored to iOS. Haven't finished it yet, so I couldn't tell you what that last slot is for, but I look forward to the update. I hope the developer is working on more stuff for iOS. They really have a great fix on what works for this platform.

We are? We got Ghost Trick last week and this week we're getting Dondonpachi. How is that a crap phase???

Just like every gaming platform ever, then? :P

I don't really like playing Ghost Trick that much, but I really enjoy watching it in action. The humor really works for me too. I love Missle!

I looking for a new tower defense game. I've played The Creeps, Fieldrunners, LOTR:TD, and Star Defense. Star Defense has been my favorite but it is pretty dated and hasn't gotten an update ever.. Does anyone know of any similar TD games to Star Defense. Here is a video for those that missed Star Defense.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just picked up the lite version to try it out. I loved Picross DS back in the day.

Along with what Wario mentioned, there's also a lot of hidden stuff that gets overlooked by everyone on a weekly basis. I'm always browsing through Touch Arcade's forums or through page after page on Appshopper and discovering something new.

Ugh, seems like I'm always running low on money in Pocket Academy. Never had this problem before with any other Kairosoft game.

Here's my hidden gem contribution - it's called NEW ORBIT:

tried Ghost Trick. What an annoying and boring piece of shit. I could barely make it through the demo. It was filled with tons of touch the screen so you can hear some gawful dialogue filled with fauxnny prose.

I really like TD but Creeps HD hasn't grabbed me yet. It's kind of meh although I like the weapon types, etc.

If it helps, you can hold your finger to the screen and it will automatically advance the text (the speed at which it does this can be controlled from the iOS settings).

Ghost Trick is generally praised highly moreso for its writing and animation rather than gameplay, as most people are drawn in by the strength of its storytelling. It should really be considered a visual novel with puzzle elements rather than a straight puzzle game with no narrative. I guess it's not for everyone though.

Fell asleep during the tutorial since the controls became obvious 30 seconds in but it wanted to take 30 minutes+ to explain

Puzzle juice is great but when it gets going fast far too often swiping a block down will randomly spin it or send it one block to either side. Really frustrating.

Best one I've tried is ピクロジ by Hangame. Amazing presentation overall, it even features music by the Japanese chiptune band YMCK - and it's free to boost. Can't really go wrong with this one.

I've tried this one, and your suggestion made me get back into it. Great interface, great controls if a little choppy framerate wise.

The problem with a game like this vs. Crosslogic is that you have to kind of choose between fullscreen touch control and a wider field with a digital d-pad. Crosslogic is so well done, but the d-pad controls get really fiddly sometimes. And that Japanese game has great 1:1 touch controls, but you're stuck with the same 9x9 grid every time. Guess I'd like to see a game you can zoom into and have touch controls as well.

It's definitely a different dynamic. Sometimes, you need to destroy the high maintenance buildings you start with, and other times you need to go into the red in order to build enough facilities/hire enough teachers to draw more students and thus build up a solid tuition base.

It takes some time, but there IS a science to it.

more so with iOS gaming.. with the volume of games coming out you'd figure you'd have more decent games than your other platforms

Best Picross game as far as interface and value, guys?

I missed this post, but I will say - PixelogicDaily is the best I've played. You can turn off error feedback so you aren't penalized for hitting the wrong square. That in itself is the best feature ever in a Picross game. All my Nonogram books I have are full of eraser shavings because of my process. :)

And I continue my hunt for a good Harvest Moon clone. Does it exist?

Gem Keepers is currently free and apparently pretty good according to a lot of feedback I've read about it.

Gem Keepers looked like it was going to be great, then I hit mission 4 where you can only place mines and no towers and realized that you have to pay for the big bombs with real money as an IAP, and that you basically can't progress without buying some of them.

For realsies? I might delete now.

Also how is Real Soccer 2012? What has Gameloft done to it? What are the microtranactions in it?

Still missing out on a ton of new free games... with that same error. I guess I can't do anything but wait it out? Some new freebies work, most others do not.

That is a fair point, but that mission can be beaten easily with the bombs that are given to you (25). The game then continues on as normal.

I never had to use the IAP.

This is somewhat old news (around two weeks) but I figured people here might be interested in it, since I haven't seen it posted anywhere outside of the blog I'll link to and retailer listings.
Takehiro Ando (Square Enix producer) has a blog on Famitsu's website called "Smartphone Game Revolution". On the entry posted on 1/23, http://www.famitsu.com/guc/blog/sgrev/11001.html , he stealth announced a new game for iOS/Android, 星葬ドラグニル which (very loosely) translates to Star Burier Dragnir (I'm probably wrong, feel free to correct me!). If you google its name you come with retailer listings for the game's theme song which is apparently gonna be sung by some Japanese group called Girl Disease. These listings (for example, http://www.getchu.com/soft.phtml?id=731247) also have some very interesting tidbits about the game: For one, Wild Arms series creator Akifumi Kaneko is involved in the project. The game's story apparently is a (literally from one of the listing descriptions) "violence fantasy" and has something to do with evil dragons with overwhelming power, and dragon knights who battle them. From the listings too, it says the game's supposed to be an "old school" like RPG. Also it'll have an anime opening for those who dig that.
While SE hasn't announced anything officially, the game's theme song is coming out on 4/11, so the game (and more concrete information of it) will presumably be out by then.
EDIT: His blog just got updated for this week's entry! http://app.famitsu.com/20120206_29074/ (Japanese only)

Interesting stuff, Goli, thanks for sharing. I'm definitely down for a new old-school rpg.

Ugh, seems like I'm always running low on money in Pocket Academy. Never had this problem before with any other Kairosoft game.
I had the same problem. At the beginning, check for useless stuff you can remove (I had a statue and a crocodile isolated from everything that had a high upkeep, and a pool that was way too expensive at first. Also, challenges are extremely important: try doing them as soon as you can.

Ok, help me remember this game. It may have been heading for the DS at one time but I'm fairly sure it was also going to be an iPhone. It was a star ship simulator/rpg where you would higher and train your crew similar to game dev story. Anyone remember this game?

IIRC that's the lone mines-only mission and it's very beatable...did you try?

Only saying b/c I played through the entire game this weekend with no IAP. Very fun and polished TD game. My only gripe was dragging towers around sliders was kinda janky.

Crosslogic HD on iPad is the best Picross game I've ever played. Yes, better than the DS games.
I don't know if it's the same on the HD version as the non-HD one, but one thing that bugs me about Crosslogic is that I'm running in to too many puzzles that can't be fully deduced. A logic puzzle just isn't the same when logic alone can't solve it.

Definitely not been a problem for me as of yet. I've completed 467/500 puzzles in Part 1 so far. 26.6% of the total puzzles. Maybe you're further along than I am?

I never even knew these games existed before the other day when I played this new Picbox game on 360 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ctayuX7tZE)

For iOS I think Piczle Lines is still the best, it's not pixel art but it's sort of relaxing to sit there connecting numbers while listening to music.
