The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

It's rare anymore that there are games that come out of nowhere with no hype and are just incredible. Crow is one of those games. You're missing out if you don't buy this game. Very creative, beautiful, fun to play, and the atmosphere is just awesome

What is it about? What are your objectives? Any variety to the gameplay?

Quick impressions:
Final Space: a neat little gumball this one, polished, pretty, high-framerate spacy tunnel shooter. I think it's from the same dev as Awesome Saucer. Quite some content, will definitely be playing it more.

Mass Effect Infiltrator: At first was disappointed it doesn't feel as polished as Dead Space (which was kinda meh but pretty damn polished imo) because it doesn't have the same smooth framerate and it seems to lack the glossy shaders from the screenshots on the iPhone 4. However... After spending half an hour or so with it, I'm impressed with the gameplay. Definitely enjoying the game much more than Dead Space, it's a fun fast-paced shooter with a really solid difficulty curve. Wish it had more polish/optimization for iPhone 4 though (it's not as pretty and smooth as Shadowgun though the gameplay is probably more interesting).

It's honestly really difficult to explain without actually playing it. I dove in blind just knowing it got good reviews but you never really know what you're getting into without playing.

Here's the best I can do. Basically you are controlling this crow over a piece of land and you can explore the land while flying and collect gems to upgrade your crow with different powers. Each piece of land has 8 gems. Once you've done that, you have to find a spirit that you have to fight. The way you fight is that you're flying on rails and you have to collect health as you go and defeat enemies in different ways. Some require slashing the enemy like in infinity blade or some require equipping a shield and barreling straight through the enemy. It's somewhat of a puzzle to try and figure out how to take out each enemy. Hopefully that sheds a little light but like I said, until you play it you won't truly know what it's like. I've never played anything like it

Spot on. I'll add it's got an RPG element in it, stemming from the fact you can either kill or save the spirits. Your choices probably will affect the ending.

As mentioned it's hard to describe.
See this quote here from the dev that does a reasonable job explaining it.

If you are mostly concerned about exciting new gameplay mechanics you won't find them here.
Physically you do some simple point to fly here, tap to collect this, and some steer to avoid that ... with a little bit of some slash and drawing battle mechanics thrown in.

The game is more about mood, setting and atmosphere...and dat game engine.

Personally given the choice yesterday of throwing more money at EA and Rockstar, I choose to flip these guys a little for a project that is obviously a product of hard work and also to reward the generosity of their (future) plan to release the game engine code as open source software.

I'm also a big fan of moody, atmospheric things like this.
It's one of those 'experience' type games.

All that said, I full expected to come in here today and see people mewling about the lack of gameplay.
Also, it may be worth noting, there is an Achievement for completing the game in 35 minutes or less ... so it's not very long, but the ambition is very large.

just want to throw my name out there for this clashmobs thing:

It's based on Facebook though. At least it requires FB login. Have you actually tried it? I don't use FB so I can't even take a peek

Mymob is based on Game Center friends playing the game actively.
You don't use Facebook for anything apart from advertising you're playing the game, like twitter etc. don't you have a dummy account or something?

i did, logged in then after a while just sat back. went back to the game and at first it said my mob was 0. then out of nowhere the people who have played the game since the update showed up with a GC icon next to them. my mob list was last seen @ 5 people. im sure more are there now as crazy as my phone has been buzzing.

ill try logging out of facebook and seeing if the friends stay in the system.

Then what's with the Facebook login?
See my edit, a way to share the game. Admittedly a bit weird it's mandatory, the connectivity doesn't allow the game to post updates even so it's just a way to say "hai guys add me to game center and let's play ib2 together!".

You have to login/be connected to Facebook to see the menus for all that. But yeah all your GC friends who also sign in to Facebook independently will show in MyMob.

Well, that's stupid to make it mandatory. I have a dummy account, if that's all it is then I'll login to it I guess. Sorta don't want to out of principle.

They've upped the XP gain significantly with this update, earning 20k+ a fight. Levelled 60-62 in a bloodline.

Shame you can't do ClashMobs more than once each once you've qualified in it, since there's a limited amount available at once. More available in a few hours.

RE: Crow. After spending almost an hour with it, I'm a little disappointed with it tbh. I find the core mechanic of floating over the landscape to be really slow, and looking for trinkets gives me that frustrated feeling I used to get in the pixel hunt games of yore. Nothing is more annoying than combing an area over again and again, not knowing where the last trinket is. The on rails sections are a lot better but they feel really shallow so far.

The fight with the Scarecrow (the first big boss) left me a bit bewildered. I flew around for a bit, did some attacks that didn't seem to accomplish anything and then a screen came up with the two options. I honestly don't know if my attacks caused the screen to come up, or if it would have come up anyway had I just flown around ignoring the boss.

On the plus side the music is great, and the cutscenes with the crow are gorgeous. The ingame visuals don't quite match up to that though, they have that same bleached and overly colour corrected feel that games like Kids vs Goblins have. The first level looks OK but its a bit too yellow.

Anyway, my feelings on it may change as I play more, but going in with OMG BEST IOS GAME EVER is a bad place to start from. Far more impressed by Lost Winds, given the time I played them toay.

I've found that I'm really uninterested in any iOS games that try to have a console/PC game look. Presentation, something that looks sharp and clever and...cute? Graphical? That stuff gets my attention much more readily.

Or, you know, if not necessarily chibi, some kind of design aesthetic.

Just aping console/PC 3D graphics is really boring to me in a handheld game. That's what my consoles are for.

Anyone still playing Battleloot Adventure? I'm almost leveled up to level 20 (which unlocks another set of talents). Just been pecking away at the game for about a 1/2 hour every day.

It's one of those games where everything about the game is great, I really like the art and styling of the game, but the actual 'game' itself is kind of lacking. It's just feels like an exercise in progression (on rails). They try to hide it by giving choices in multiple battles/quests you can do, but the reality is that you pretty much have to do the easiest quest and then that will level you up enough to accomplish the next easiest quest. Then so on and so on.

The 'loot' portion of the game is even more rote than that. As it is blatently 'on-rails' and there is very little variety in the choices you have that can make your character feel unique or specialized.

I haven't really had to 'grind' very much and the arenas they have where you can earn some coin are a nice way to alleviate any grinding you have to do. It's not a game you can just walk through though. It will offer you some challenges and you will have to change strategies sometimes you get through certain battles. But, it still never feels like the game is throwing you can curve balls.

Hopefully they can make a second one, but flesh out the game itself a bit more. I'm all for simplicity, but in an RPG that can be a liability if taken too far.

Exactly my impression, only I've realized that way earlier than you, at like level8 :P And put it away because I didn't like the loot system with unlocks and then buying at all, I like my loot... as actual loot.

Are there any good Etrian Odyssey or King's Field type RPGs out for iPad? I've got a hankering for some old school dungeon crawling.

just a reminder folks

never never never buy EA games at full price. Always buy when they are at sale at 1$ or get it when it is free.

Because you will never know when they will remove the game and replace it with another one at full price, filled with IAPs and monthly subscriptions

Yeah, iPad Tetris latest victim.

Short video to illustrate my main gripe with Max Payne Mobile controls.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oNHY0LUyIA

I see your point, but even worse than that, if you've got hands on both the move controls, you can't shoot or activate bullet time unless you lift off the iPad. That makes it unplayable to me. Hold down to move and look, then push the buttons. They do nothing.

What's the point of that on a multitouch device? It's terrible.

Port is great, but they need to fix that, it's super annoying.

There is a The Avengers: Iron Man - Mark VII app for free out now. It's basically an interactive comic book following the development of each iteration of his armor in the movies up to the one he uses in The Avengers.

EA has got me thinking about jailbreaking and alternative methods of getting apps....

EA should be the last company that has got you thinking about that. Their games always go on sale or free (like literally every other week for each game) and they're mostly not even that great to begin with.

Holy crap they really fucked up there didn't they??

Also, that vid is a disguised Gameloft viral, I'm calling it :P

Haha, say what you will about Gameloft (9mm is terrible), but they still have the best shooting controls for touch screens. :P

If Max Payne had 9mm's controls I would be a happy camper.

I will certainly give 9mm that. You could definitely move and shoot at the same time.

Sometimes I wonder who tests these games. I thought the same of GTA3, which has an utterly maddening difficulty level, compounded by sketchy controls. It would not have taken much to tweak the game to make it more fun to play. And now this with Max Payne. It's like - did someone actually play through the whole game, from start to end? And NOT end up cutting themselves or headbutting the iPad?

Payne boils down to "you can move, aim and shoot. Pick 2". It's more jarring the more I play...

Yep. And like I said, it's an easy thing to fix. I even sent the devs an email (including the video). Let's hope they consider the feedback.

Yeah, I was super frustrated with GTA3 as well (same dev). Another problem that port has is that playing on the iPad you have to reach the center of the screen to move the camera. The shooting controls are bogus, completely broken. This is in part the original games's fault, but like you said, it wouldn't have taken much to tweak.

They get that being able to customize your controls is important (both games have a good deal of customization), but it seems they simply don't test the games or play iOS enough to understand how the controls should work.

Enable Tap to Shoot and you can shoot when aiming by tapping without having to bother with the shoot button. You can do the same with jumping to slide/dodge easier. Not great but way way more fluid and playable (you can move/aim and shoot at the same time) that way IMO. Guns require multiple tapping but SMGs etc continue to fire when holding.
