With an estimated $9 million for its second Friday, Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp looks to top the box office for a second week in a row, while New Line's comedy hit Wedding Crashers with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn also held up well, adding an estimated $7.7 million to its take on Friday. Barring any surprises, they should remain #1 and 2 this weekend.

Michael Bay's attempt at a new genre with the sci-fi film The Island, starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, seems to have been met with general disinterest, as its opening day of $4.4 million points to an opening weekend well below $15 million. It only did slightly better than Paramount Pictures' remake of Bad News Bears with Billy Bob Thornton, and they'll likely be fighting it out for third place this weekend.

Opening in almost half as many theatres, Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects had a respectful opening day of $3 million, pulling in the diehard horror fans, while the John Singleton produced Sundance hit Hustle & Flow made just a little bit less in just over a thousand theatres. Expect the latter to overtake the former by Sunday.

Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's take on H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, crossed the $200 million mark yesterday, making it only the second movie this year to do so.
:lol :lol :lol

I guess that explains why no one is in The Island thread. I saw a 5pm showing yesterday and it was nearly empty.

This is all because of no Scarlett Johansson titties. Live and learn, Mr Bay.

I thought that War of the Worlds would do a 'healthy' 300-350mln in the US. Such a shame because It's one of the few movies that got me on the edge of my seat. The end to the movie is probably the reason it's perofmring the way it is. Still, 200mln is pretty good.

You know, I thought this movie had been out for at least several weeks already. Then the ad said today, confusing the hell out of me.

But yeah, count me among those who just have zero interest.

"What splendid news."

Its just looks boring.
b'b'b'b'but, it has car chases and explosions and non-stop extreme spinning camera action! how can THAT be boring?

This is what happens when you have "sneak preview weekends" for 3 weeks before the movie comes out. Seriously, the movie has technically been playing every weekend since FF came out so whoever wanted to see it already did. Stupid Warner.

Horrible, horrible film. That's pretty much all I have to say about it, really - not one single memorable scene in that picture. Except seeing the guy who plays "Neelix" scream like a little girl in a gas chamber.

It successfully manages to knock off the freeway chase in Bad Boys II, the Kirk vs. Kirk scene in Star Trek VI, the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, the futuristic society of Logan's Run, the nauseating camera work of The Bourne Supremacy, and the *quote* "sex scene" from Pearl Harbor. And don't forget, the always-timeless Michael Bay FUNNY TOKEN BLACK CHARACTER(tm). Not just one, though, but TWO ("Jesus loves you!", clerk at Merrick Hospital Wing).

Seriously, this movie was the most generic piece of trash I have had the pleasure of witnessing all year - and given how 2005's treated us, that's really saying something.

Uh, yeah. It is. It'll likely end up doing a fairly healthy box office all things considered, and I really didn't think it ever had a shot of having a massive gross. I think that no film could ever be predicted to do these kind of numbers outside of the S sequels of 2007 (Spider-Man, Shrek). Even Superman Returns will have to relaunch a franchise, and overall there are very, very few franchises that can demand these types of numbers anymore.

The Island's numbers are downright dysmal, while Wedding Crashers...wow. An incredibly strong opening weekend and now a projected drop of only 28%...this film is a bit of a blockbuster, all things considered. It picked the right time to release, as it really has no competition whatsoever. Young Adults looking for a raunchy, mindless comedy have nowhere else to turn, so it's a big success. It also sort of works on the trend of comedies of this nature being far more successful than anyone could expect (See: Meet the Fockers).

But this has to be a real kick in the 'nads for Micheal Bay and the good people at Dreamworks, as well as a real hit to the apparent star power of McGregor and Johansson. Here is a film with an aggressively robust cast, car chases and a bit of a fun side to it...and yet nobody went to see it. While the reviews have been negative most people pay no attention to such things and the film simply didn't appeal. I wonder if Bay will run back to Bruckheimer begging for his name back...but considering "King Arthur", he might have lost his golden touch as well.

Batman pulled in another cool million on Friday. (GO BATMAN!). Fantastic Four continues to drop like a rock. And Hustle and Flow is bombing HARD for all the hype and MTV airtime it was getting the last couple of weeks. It will be lucky to pull in $10 million for the opening weekend.

Bruckheimer is too busy counting his Pirates of the Caribbean money and buying a new vault for the money the sequels will make to bother.

I have seen one commercial for it and it was horrible. I know more about Micheal Bay than I do about The Island after viewing it.

I dunno...the "Action for the Smart, Sci-Fi for the Dumb" genre is one way of putting it. It tries very hard to be more intelligent than past Bay work...and then apparently devolves into car chase mania.

THE ISLAND
Domestic Total as of Jul. 22, 2005: $4,270,000 (Estimate)
Production Budget: $100
Don't even bother with that production number. With all the product placement in the movie, I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than 2/3's of that.

I think they meant a new genre for Michael Bay. It is, at least partially, something new for him.

Um, how many theaters is The Island in anways? One of the biggest theaters around me (The Irvine Spectrum) isn't even showing it, in fact none of the theaters around Irvine or Tustin are showing it.

i thought it was pretty damn good.

not as bad as some haters make it out to be and not as good as ign's review made it seem.

but pretty damn good and better than all his previous work.

Hey, The Rock was actually quite good! All three leads churned out strong performances (Ed Harris played one of the most intriguing villains ever in a popcorn action flick; Connery was solid; Nick Cage did a respectable job as the lab rat), the script had a couple clever quips, and the action was fun. Don't even get me started on the phenomenal Hans Zimmerman soundtrack.

But besides that, yeah, Michael Bay's previous work is shit.

I'm pretty sure that was only the night of July 8. So, no, I don't think that excuses the movie bombing. Anyway, I'm OVERJOYED.

michael bay is not critic proof anymore! i guess people learned their lessons after bad boys two

The Rock is Michael Bay's best movie, easily

Edit: Nevermind, I didn't know he also produced. That gives him some level of control over things, including the script.

Uh...Hustle&Flow's production budget is 2.8 Million. No, it will not bomb. It's a shame, because it's a very good movie.

And whoever this tested McGregor and Johanesson's star power, since when the FUCK does Scarlett have star power? Weird looking bitch.

P.S. Fuck Batman.

It was good. I thought it was almost as good as The Rock. Just a damn entertaining movie all the way through and the story that WAS there was pretty good. (And to the person who said it had PLOTHOLES, WTF are you talking about? It was a pretty simple and straightforward storyline.) The music was cool too.

Michael Bay sucks, most of the time. But he CAN make some fun movies like Bad Boys and The Rock, and this is one of them.

It's funny to see everyone :lol :lol :lol ing at this, yet most of them haven't even seen it. I like when people just want things to fail.

Just FYI,
The Island is a remake of a 70's movie riffed on MST3K called "Parts: The Clonus Horror".

Apparently, it's an unauthorized one.

Seattle Times said:
Reached at his home in Ashburn, Va., "Clonus" director Robert S. Fiveson said Wednesday that he'd sneaked into a preview screening of "The Island" the previous night. "I went in hoping and praying that it was enough different than 'Clonus' so that I could just put my mind at rest and move on, but I can't. Because astonishingly enough, it not only seems to rest on the very skeleton of the film, ... there were enough (similarities) in the movie in the first third that I thought this cannot be happenstance or casual."

Fiveson said he'd known about the numerous Web sites and message boards that have been pointing out the similarities — even of some specific shots: "Subplots, characterizations, even down to the butterfly getting through the filter! And the chase scenes were almost in the same order and same locale."

I just saw it and thought that it was really good.

It does get bogged down a bit in the middle with the ongoing chase and does suffer from the absolutely unrealistic building sign sequence but otherwise is a very solid film.

8/10

If it does bomb it won't be because it wasn't any good it'll be because of blind Micheal Bay hatred.

Errr, blind hatred ? What are you talking about ? Alot of people think that Micheal Bay is a shitty director who makes shitty movies.

The Island has been panned in local reviews, which coupled with my experiences with past Bay films makes me not want to fork up a single cent to go see it.

Thats not blind hatred. It's called forming an educated opinion based on facts available.

Like I said before, I'm just going to download the good Scarlett scenes and be done with the movie. If there isn't, I hope this movie bombs as hard as possible.

My biggest problem with it is that the ads don't tell me *anything*. There are movies I'll go see because they look like actiony romps, but between the title and the way the ads are presented, you get the feeling they're going for something pretentious -- but all you get is BOOM.

I don't think I've ever seen a big budget movie with ads that carry so mixed a message.

Seems to be a mixed bag to me. People do know he can make good movies (The Rock, Bad Boys) and even a panned movie like Amageddon is generally very much liked by the public (seems to be girls that say they like it though, heh).

I'd have to blame this on flat out shitty advertisments. Much worse reviews for Fantastic Four didn't stop that from becoming a big hit, because the public saw commercials and realized it would be a fun 2 hour summer movie. To be honest, most people who go see movies don't give a shit about reviews. They probably don't even know what kind of reviews the movie is getting, other than maybe a general idea. If reviews mattered, Cinderella Man wouldn't have tanked and Fantastic Four would have.

The commercials for The Island left most people with a "well uh.. okay then" kind of feeling. It didn't tell you what the hell the movie was about for the most part.

we are not carrying the island in my theatre and at least 90% of all Regal Entertainment Group (which is the largest theatre chain in the nation)won't carry it either cuz of some pussy feud with Dreamworks i believe. I don't know the exact details because the general manager has gone on vacation before i got a chance to ask him about the island....
