:lol :lol :lolWith an estimated $9 million for its second Friday, Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp looks to top the box office for a second week in a row, while New Line's comedy hit Wedding Crashers with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn also held up well, adding an estimated $7.7 million to its take on Friday. Barring any surprises, they should remain #1 and 2 this weekend.
Michael Bay's attempt at a new genre with the sci-fi film The Island, starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, seems to have been met with general disinterest, as its opening day of $4.4 million points to an opening weekend well below $15 million. It only did slightly better than Paramount Pictures' remake of Bad News Bears with Billy Bob Thornton, and they'll likely be fighting it out for third place this weekend.
Opening in almost half as many theatres, Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects had a respectful opening day of $3 million, pulling in the diehard horror fans, while the John Singleton produced Sundance hit Hustle & Flow made just a little bit less in just over a thousand theatres. Expect the latter to overtake the former by Sunday.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's take on H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, crossed the $200 million mark yesterday, making it only the second movie this year to do so.
