From the Final Round thread:

If BALA wins KOF, I'll pick the game up outta respect for my parents' country. My first fighting game memories were getting my ass handed to me with Orochi in KOF97 on Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Viva Mexican KOF, cabrones!

Oh yeah, will focus on this, Marvel and maybe SFxT for my local scene. :D

Double post, I know, but finally a japanese player will attend a major, Oogosho will attend MLG.

Japanese link.

For those who don't know he's the player that put Joe on the map in the arcade version (OCVing teams with Raiden and K), and the first to do stun combos iirc. He also had one of the best Maximas.

Great to see international interest in the game at the tournament level, maybe they can give Bala a run for his money (everyone in the US seems to be way below his level).

Also was OCVing K' and Raiden with Ralf too.

So, I'm totally mindfucked right now... What's the most preferred way to play KOF on an arcade stick? D:

Here in Peru the standard was either A B C D (line config) or
A B (square config)
C D

I use the square configuration but most of the people I know prefer to use the former one.

Just got to finally play this earlier and holy shit I love it. One of the first things I loved was the fact that some characters had, what seems to be, unspammable supers. So much frustration in SF4 from people online randomly catching me with their mashed super/ultra.

I'll probably end up spending the next few days solely with SFxT but during breaks I'll be in the KOF lab trying to catch up.

You can still Wake up super in this game with some characters, just watch out.

But welcome to the club anyways, are you on PS3?

Wakeup EX is more common then wakeup DM. Especially for some chars like Billy who can get DM damage from his EX mid-screen, and huge damage in the corner, if your combo abliities are strong.

still running with default setup.

yea, mashing out a super is not a valid tactic, it'll get stuffed by the most pitful attacks. looks funny.

indeed, i see takuma players doing this often. sometimes i can hit him out of it, but not consistently.

Top 8 Final Round

Top 8 starts at around 2 hours or earlier.

One of the commentators was going apeshit (Juicebox). heh was good.

Amazing how all these good last 8 players were dropping combos when they shouldn't of. Everyone was dropping at least 1 big combo in the top 8. Combofiend drop was silly, he could've won first game against bala when he was doing so well with Maxima too. Then he dropped like 4 big combos against Reynald.

---

Really enjoyed seeing The Answer get put into losers, only because it was so unexpected.

Chris G has a very good King with light hits into slide into whatever. Don't think he knows about her corner frame traps though, very impressed by him being a Marvel player too. Didn't like how he was too cautious against Reynald lol, literally let go of the stick at the end eheh salt ahead.

Oscar (Answer) v Reynald - most fun match for the trolling the commentators were going on about Reynald being on a next level and smiling. I think Mr Karate EX command grab is pretty silly.

All mexico top 3 for u to stay free. Bala was crying at the end lol.

---

5 hours 16 minutes in - "honest fighters for an honest fighting game".

Reynald isn't Mexican.

I play:

AC
BD

I've tried default SNK style but too many years of SF have messed up my ability to adapt unless I'm playing something entirely different like VF.

As Juicebox will say

Pick characters you like! Until you fully understand the game system you won't need to change your team. Focus on basics.

That said, Kyo and Ryo are simple characters to grasp.

Pick Mai, at least you won't be bored looking at her.

Mai is also one of the harder characters, though fundamentals can cover this. You can't make mistakes with her. 1f full-screen Neomax does wonders though when opponent is at half-life, or doesn't have full drive.

Her neomax is so good as a deterrent I almost never use her DC combos even though her hit-confirm is awesome as well.

She's a bit light on the combo side, and the best ones are corner specific.

I'd recommend Mai for a beginner, should let you get the hang of simple combos, spacing and show you the importance of knowing your normals. Don't have to worry about big/hard EX/DC combos either.

Overall I'd say to pick three different style of characters to get a hang of the the game, a grappler (Clark, Raiden etc), zonner (Mai, Athena, Kensou, Andy etc) and cqc (Kim, Shen, Ryo, Ralf etc). Should help you understand and play against various styles.

Ryo has a simple approach whereas Robert is a bag full of tricks, both are great in their own way.

Yeah, DC is a waste with her, best save it for HD as she can do over 60% meterless damage easy (and builds 90% of a power meter by the time it ends) with the combo.

I'm pretty much just starting out now too. Athena is the first character I really want learn but I'm having trouble picking two more. How is the execution in this game? Going by the trials it seems harder than SF4.

Ignore the trials, hit up the shoryuken or dreamcancel wikis/forums for strats and bnb combos to use in real matches.

The trials aren't really representative of what combos you'll be doing in matches, but if you haven't played old school fighters, yes, it will take some getting used to.

Make sure you always hold the last direction in a input, i.e holding forward in the qcf motion.

So what's the right way to unlock Billy and Saiki? I've tried all the methods I've seen online and none of them seem to work.

Billy: Just get high ranks in arcade mode up to the third match, consistent A or above should trigger him.

Saiki: Do as many target actions as you can(in arcade mode) in each round of each match. 5 or 6 per round should do it.

They should both show up during the fourth match.

Thank you. Just unlocked them.

Now time to see what characters I'm feeling. I already have an affinity for Kula just from using her in the demo, so that's one char down.
