The Last Guardian early copy impressions thread

I'm so curious to see how this fits into the Ico/SotC meta-timeline.

I feel like it can only logically be a prequel to SotC, right?

Good to hear the positive early impressions.

Please please please PLEASE let this be the rare game that doesn't have positive early impressions only to be savaged by everyone here upon release.

I need this to be great!

I'll be flabbergasted if this gets bad reviews. Check out some of the footage floating around on Youtube, it looks fantastic and like the game we all wanted with the extra juice it needed from the PS4. My doubts have evaporated.

12 hours completion time is right around that sweet spot for me in a single-player linear narrative experience. Any longer than 15 hours and there usually is filler content that isn't necessary.

INSIDE is just one of the more recent titles that shows that a well-paced game of 3-4 hours often can often be more enjoyable than a longer single-player experience with filler content.

12 hours seems a bit short for a game people were begging for for so long
1. Quantifying game quality with play time is a fool's errand.
2. Ueda's past games were that length or shorter, so anyone who has been waiting for this game knows what to expect in terms of play time.
3. Most single-player, experience and narrative focused games do not benefit from inflated play times. Games like this are meant to be played in a few sittings and digested as a complete experience by most who play it. The longer a game is, the less likely most players will actually reach the end.
4. If it's anything like Ueda's past games, fans of his work will have no problem playing through it again and again. His games are more like good novels; they aren't disposable entertainment.

From reading the impressions, it looks like critics are going to kill this game, but fans will love it. If you played an Ueda game, then you know exactly what to expect.

Sounds great. Clunky controls are expected, I can deal with those. Frame rate is completely irrelevant. If those are the two main issues I'm going to absolutely love this.

It seems the framerate is good enough to not ruin the experence which is good enough for me.

12 hours is great for a linear single player experience. Many games of the time gave 6-10, including stuff like God of War.

"Clunky" controls are pretty subjective with Ueda's games though, since they tend to be loose and weighty by design in a way that conveys the nature of the character through gameplay and movement

I don't see it as being clunky in the same way a bad FPS or fighting game might have poor controls

Yeah like Argo's movement. That wasn't clunky at all. I'll never get people who wanted the horse to control like a car.

For a second I was trying to figure out if this means there's no tutorial or if it means there's literally no Ico-like hand-holding.

No glowy shit telling you where to jump, etc.

But yeah, if they want to bring Yorda back for part of it, I'm game.

That's the difference between Ueda design and others. In other games, when you're in a horse, you control the horse. In Ueda games, you control the guy who is on the horse. I can see why it may throw off some people; but yeah, I love the way Agro controls; it feels like a real horse (for better and worse)

Too positive. I need to hear some "this part straight sucks" to fully buy into remaining the praise.

Yeah hope we have a Gaf backlash like Uncharted 4 recently and other great games of past. It's not a great game unless half of Gaf is shit posting!

I am happy with what I have played, would give it a solid 8.5 overall. It's a swan song to Ico/Sotc, if you liked those two games, likely will like this one too. Not for everyone, but no game is, it delivers to the audience that is seeking a spiritual successor to the last two games.

Sounds about right. The faithful will love it and those who felt the first two games were overrated will probably feel the same way here. It's probably going to be a bit divisive but that's okay. Games don't have to be universally loved or hated. The main takeaway is that after all that time the game is not a disaster. The right audiences will have a good time.

I'm buying Day 1 for reasons, but I actually have zero hype.

This is a weird one.

Wow that's crazy. Honestly I preferred ICO but I found nothing wrong with SOTC, it was fun and a spectacle back in the day.

Sounds fantastic!

Good thing critics were pretty big fans of Ueda's past work then.

I could see it getting knocked down for technical issues and things of that nature. but not for Ueda's unique approach to game design.
