When was the last time a game's story impressed you ?

Zero Escape parts 1 + 2

They're twisty as all getout with branching narrative paths, all of which tie together in lore, gameplay, and story to make two VN gems.

1000xResist earlier this year. Didnt look that good during chapter 1 but man was I wrong. Tied for best walking sim gams honestly.

I don't give two shits about games stories. They are games, not movies. Just make fun games and don't waste much time and money with sories and maybe games start taking less time and money to make.
When I was younger, I would have considered your comment very silly, but now it perfectly describes my own behavior. 7 or so years ago I found the idea of people skipping cutscenes and dialogue ridiculous. However these days I just want to get to the gameplay, unless the story is truly exceptional and well-integrated – which is incredibly rare in gaming.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

The overarching story is strong in its own right, but Chapter 5/6 especially is one of the most powerful narrative sequences I've ever seen in gaming.
It hits like a freight train.
I don't watch people stream things in general, but their are some live reactions on YouTube for the parts you're talking about, and those are actually worth watching. Some people could not handle... Well, you know.

Despite being Nintendo games, these 2 games have really fucked up (in a good way) stories, esp once you see all 3 sides to FE

The first videogame story that really hit me hard and feel sorry for a videogame character

I feel like at some point people are gonna get tired of hearing about this game...but it's too true to not mention it.

It was just so damn good, and well told. Loved damn near every minute of it.

I'd say Metaphor Re Fantazio but I've just started playing The Witcher 2 and New Vegas a few months ago, both of these games are awesome to me.

IT's been many decades.

Need the story part to be short, curt and to the point. Refined and honed. Like an old efficient still sharp clerk at the MA DMV.

Otherwise put it on Netflix and maybe I will watch. Probably not.

Not so long ago. This year Clair Obscur, Mouthwashing, Triangle Strategy, Metal Gear Solid. Last year Alan Wake 2, Felvidek, Alone in the Dark, Loretta.

In the interest of balance: Still kinda pissed at Vanillaware for never porting Dragon's Crown Pro to Switch, tho
Not Just Dragon's Crown Pro but also Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir never made it to Switch.

But I want most is Muramasa since that one is stuck on a dead system.

Most recently, Days gone. I really want to see what Garvin had in mind for the story continuation in a sequel.

I booted up Nonary Games last night on the pro. Then.

Rain Code, The Hundred Line, Investigations Collection, Somnium Files 2, 13 Sentinels.

Japan has endless impressive narrative games. ENDLESS.

Reading over this thread and yep, there are some very impressive narratives in games that come out every day.

Loved Expedition 33's story.
Got a bit tired of the combat by the end, and that's because I usually avoid turn based. But the story made it so worth it.

I might go with Horizon Zero Dawn. I love post apocalyptic sci-fi stories, especially the kind where they don't tell you how the apocalypse happened until late in the story, usually as a big plot twist. I went into Horizon not expecting much, Killzone wasn't exactly known for being strong on story. But after beating Horizon, hell, it kinda reminded me of Xenogears in certain ways. Themes and whatnot. Forbidden West didn't quite live up to it, but that was more in line with my expectations.

On of the best stories, if not the best one 2022. Brilliant storytelling.
Definitely, I have it on PS4 and Switch and ended up getting physical copies on both as well. I love this fucking game so much. Finished it multiple times, over and over and over. As I said, there's something surreal about the game. Like a dreamy mist almost. And once you start putting all the lore and the story together, it's mind blowing stuff. Even the person you think it the bad person, you figure out that, that person is just as much a victim as anyone else. Don't want to spoil things for people. But I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

And when I'm not replaying it, I end up thinking about it as well. The soundtrack is also fantastic, it really amazing. I need to stop now, I can ramble on and on about Signalis. I have an unhealthy obsession with this game, same as I've had with Final Fantasy VIII since the day I got it way back on PS1

I still think about Stellar Blade's plot from time to time, it really impressed me.

And people then went and complained about the voice work. I mean, how dare a game have British voice acting for the lead instead of an American. They're next game will probably have Americans doing all the voice work and end up being cringe as it mostly is.

I love Stellar Blade, my favourite game of 2024, replayed it multiple times in a row as well.

Hot take: but some of the Assassin's Creed storylines have been pretty good. I liked 1/2/3 and Oddysee.
BF is still the best, but story had nothing to do with it.

I don't play in english this kind of game anyway. Korean or Japanese.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - I wish I could erase my memory of it and replay it as if it was my first time. So good. Felt like playing a movie.

Clair obscure, easily. Silent Hill 2 remake and Inscryption before that. I'm sure I'm forgetting something else in recent memory, but definitely those 3 games.
