The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

How good are the graphics guys? My expectation bar is set high.

Shame on me for skipping GoW:A, despite being a PS+ member I'm not playing this demo. :(

Good. Not much better than Uncharted though. I guess that is pretty much impossible at this point. Lighting is a bit better though I think.

TLOU, GoW:A and Beyond are probably going to end up the best looking games on PS3.

The flatness of the foliage and lack of physics when you run through tall grass or those tall ass sunflowers is a gripe albeit minor. Everything else is top notch though and I haven't fought shit yet.

The very first thing I did was run into the bottles floating in the puddle when you first start up the demo to see if they'd react accordingly. As soon as I saw a chair, I ran into and punched it to try to make it move. Disappointed both times.

I'm just going to say that messing around with the flashlight was amazing. The lightning effect is very well made, but that's just my opinion fellow GAFfer.

They have pretty much hit the ceiling with U3, a few improvements here and there but nothing drastic.

The fact it is such a stable 30fps AND still looks very good is the best part.

When using headphones, are you guys leaving the sound settings to default, or turning it on to "stereo headphones"? I'm using a pair of Astro A40's.

The biggest technical differences is the way there doing ambient occlusion with this one, and the indirect/bounce lighting. I'm sure UC3 had SSAO, but not like this. There was a thread on here a while back about how shadows casted by the characters onto surfaces was pretty unique.

If you count things like animation and lighting effects (flashlight) in "graphics" then this shit is mind blowing considering it's on PS3.

There's maybe two studios on planet Earth that even approach ND animation. And they have made the animation not only really amazing to look at, but the player controls extremely well and responsively. This is master class level right here. They are gonna melt faces on PS4.

I'd like to know this too, also when using Sony Wireless (pulse) headphones.

Oh and how do you recharge the flashlight? It says shake the controller, but it looks like you're supposed to hit it like you would an actual flashlight?

You just kinda shake it for a second or two... kinda cool actually (especially with the sound effect) I usually hate any and all motion controls, but this was actually neat. It's oddly realistic.

Hey, guys. I'm trying to connect my Turtle Beaches X11 to my PS3 for audio only, no voice chat, and I need some help. I plugged everything in but still can't hear anything through the headset. Are there specific RCA outlets I'm supposed to plug it in to?

I'm also using HDMI if that helps. I'd really appreciate some help.

Is it true that the flashlight beam has a GI bounce? Like if you light a wall under some angle close to the corner, light bounces a bit into the adjacent wall?

Are the regular PS3 A/v's hooked up to the back of the Turtles' red and whites? That's the key ingredient.

I have mine running through a separate stereo. (Because I use a PC monitor) No HDMI for audio. Can't get it to work any other way.

If you do that, audio through the standard cables that come with the PS3, make sure you've adjusted your audio setting properly in the XMB.

I seriously can't get HDMI audio to play nice with my TB headphones.

Yeah, I have them plugged in. But on my HD TV I have many white and red ports on the back and three ports on the side.

What do you mean seperate stereo?

Which settings would I choose? I can choose: HDMI, Optical, and Audio Input Corrector/SCART/AV MULTI. I tried the third one but the audio went out on the TV and couldn't hear the sound from my TB's neither.

You have television, so you don't need to run yours through a stereo like I do... so nevermind that bit.

On the back of your set, you should have an "audio in" somewhere. That's what you use. (plug in the Beach's red/white and then your red/white into those) And then you go into XBM and make sure you have the right audio input selected. I forget what it's called... but there should be a picture!! haha

Has anyone uploaded a stealth playthrough of this demo, or is that absolutely not possible?
I'm pretty sure 100% stealth is almost impossible. I got detected every time at least once and I mastered Chaos Theory haha :D

I don't think it uses real GI. Sometimes it doesn't look quite right. So I think it is still faked, but really well done. Almost no game comes close.

OK, so I have the audio to work on my TB's but the audio from the TV goes out. Is there a way for both to have audio at once?

Hmm. I'm not sure... I'm not really smart at these things. I usually get things to work, but I have to tinker.

Sorry man. Maybe try a google search? I imagine someone has figured it out. You cannot be the first with this problem.

Is everything a bit gray when you have your flashlight off (so you're not absolutely blind without it) or is there something wrong with my PS3 settings?

Demo isn't shareable?

lol ok. Thanks for you help, though! I'll have an update soon. I might buy a new set when the PS4 comes out, anyway lol.

It kinda is, every account can download it in two different systems (probably the same thing they have going on for full games, so in case you have another PS3 or you lose yours and buy a new one, you can still download all your stuff), so if you have a friend with it and he trusts you enough to give you his PSN account, you can download it and play.

Someone please be so kind and make a throwaway account to share with me. I'm still getting errors on the download screen and it isn't showing up in my transaction info download history stuff :(

Just finished the download, which took no time at all. It's only 132 MBs.

I made a dummy account and can activate the demo on one more system I think. First quote gets account details.

hit it like an actual flashlight for the best effect (shaking it works too), but it just feels "right" if you hit it. :)

ps. I'm in yurop so I'm too tired to read the other 100 pages prior to this.

Don't worry, it's mostly all gushing.

That youtube me again plugin is coming in really handy. Love watching the vids in HQ right here on GAF in embedded form. Even have my 720p/XL preference saved.

Game looks great.

by stealth do you mean stealth and entirely surpass combat, or just stealth kill your way through.

for the former, the way these sections are, you more or less wouldn't be able to. but for the latter, you pretty much can do that.

Man the last area is very intense! :O

You're telling me... I tried doing a stealth kill on one guy. That worked out GREAT.

Then I think I attracted a 2nd guy. Moved out of the way and then tried to do another stealth kill. That didn't work out so great. Attracted the others in the room, and it pretty much devolved into a full out brawl. Fun as hell, but I was panicking so much, I didn't even bother to pull my gun out.

I survived that one, so hooray for me.
