You've just summed up the problem with games journalism in one sentence.

lol yup; death to the 10 point scale (and for god's sake, why on earth are 100 point scales still a thing)!

really, should be 8 point at max (4 stars usually suffices) or, as I prefer, a 2 point scale: 0 - not worth your time/money, 1 - worth your time/money

Somehow it does not look as impressive as UC2 or UC3 used to look ... as you said maybe due to the matureness of this gen its getting harder to get impressed. I can't believe people said "we don't need next gen yet". Looking at the PS4 games, I said we need it right now. Imagine how much more ND could have done with this game on the PS4. I hope they do a PS4 version for this game.
I'd rather they work on a new project

I don't understand why people think Microsoft having Polygon on their pay-roll would affect this review. They don't have anything to gain; the majority of reviewers will still give The Last of Us high scores whether it deserves it or not. Microsoft has their eyes set on the next generation, not on selling more Xbox 360s. They aren't going to be throwing money at one internet site to get them to give a game for the last generation a slightly less-than-stellar review. I'd be suspicious if it was a really good review for a 360 exclusive, but Microsoft really has nothing to gain from something like this.

More likely explanations are that Polygon wanted page views or the reviewer just didn't like the overhyped game as much as everyone else.

that's where you lost me, you honestly believe NONE of those titles even deserve a 9?

I can understand the argument nothing should ever score a 10/10 but what the heck do you think deserves a 9 if you believe none of the ones listed do

Demon's/Dark Souls, Portal 1, 999 and Virtue's Last Reward, Ace Attorney games.

Take Uncharted 2 for example. I didn't like the constant waves of enemies and repetitive combat, nor did I like the boring and unchallenging platforming. For that reason alone, I wouldn't give it more than a 6 or 7.

Damn, I'm pretty hyped for this game. Been doing my best to stay on media blackout, but I did just see the multiplayer trailer - looks like it could be interesting. I love how they're releasing this on a Friday, it's almost like they're treating it like a big summer blockbuster at the movies and it pretty much is as far as game releases.

dont want to read all the reviews due to spoilers but what about AI ?
Enemy AI has been praised significantly. Destructoid's review makes a point to mention how much they were impressed.

Allied AI has been criticized for walking nearby an enemy and being "unseen". It's a tough balance because you don't want the game to feel like an escort mission.

Other sites also point out the flaws.. but they still give it a 10/10.

That doesn't bother you that a game with flaws gets a perfect score? The last time I checked a game with flaws isn't "Perfect". I've always been highly skeptical of a perfect score for a game. I know I've never played a game worthy of a 10 before, and if you think you have then you clearly missed some things.

seriously: why the fuck would anyone in their right mind who is looking forward to playing this themselves in another, what, 9-10 days, spoiler that experience by watching someone else playing it?...

ot: once every year or so, the gaming media & i see eye to eye on something. & i'm pretty certain that this's gonna be one of those :) ...

Yep. Especially for a game where part of the experience is the encounters. If it's a survival game, I don't want to know ahead of time when and where the infected and humans will pop up. =/

Also don't know why people are arguing where this game stands among other games. It's been established that it's a good game liked by a lot of reviewers. Why sit there focusing on the scores. People say FF7 was overrated and isn't better than another RPG. Does that change how I feel about the game? Nope.

That's an issue with enemy AI and ally AI, as both aren't reacting to the presence of each other.

I just love that a site that actually cares to point out the flaws in a game gets ass-kicked all over the internet. Until you've actually played the game yourself, how about you hold on to all that vitriolic hate.

I thinks it's the obvious perceived MS bias (see fixed XBone logo on page) that's getting their a$$ kicked right now more than anything... #LastofUsGamespotGaveitan8Gate

No game is perfect, 10/10 doesnt meant a game is perfect.

Is there a story related significance to this coming out the Friday before Father's Day weekend instead of the normal Tuesday?
I would assume it is just a favor to all of us eager gamers who want to experience it all in one go or at least all in one weekend. 17 hours should be very manageable if you have no other big plans. Joel is no doubt a father figure in the game so maybe that is why they picked that weekend to release it. And after E3 which I am sure played a role. Hard to say, but it works much better than a bloody Tuesday. :)

You are assuming a lot of things from only a few words.

It's weird because I agree with your opinion.

not personally a fan of the Demon's/Dark Souls games but I would agree with you on the ones you listed as being 9s this gen

not gonna argue with you about Uncharted 2 since I really haven't sunk enough time into the Uncharted series (it's on my pile of shame backlog)

More like the problem with assuming 10/10 means "flawless".

How should a 10/10 be granted then? I think the only reason to give a game a perfect score is when it is as close to flawless as possible. Although with big budget games basically being scored on a 7-10 scale with a few games being terrible enough to be outliers, I can see why this game would deserve close to 10.

Quick question:

So, I've managed to avoid almost all coverage of this except the very early E3 trailers. Does the multiplayer reveal trailer spoil anything? I just want to know what the hell the multiplayer is. If it's a deathmatch or something else.

There's no such thing as a flawless game. So I see "perfect" scores as just indicating that the reviewer thinks it's a game that's up there with the all time classics. Something that belongs on their favorite games of all time list etc.
