The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

You know. Thinking of yesterday when the reviews got posted, and me clicking on this thread without knowing the scores, was pretty fun.

I saw 10,10,10,10 etc. I was laughing all the way and kind of shaking my head like "sheesh they done it again"

And then some idiot wanted to be known and posted a score of 7.5. It was like a child screaming to get some attention.

So they knew almost everyone else was going to give it a perfect score?

Totally true. Except, as Edge and others pointed out, the story takes place across a huge swath of America. The "frequency which" "acts they were committing" is obviously stretched out. It's not like POW, POW, POW, action scene after action scene. Presumably the characters travel many miles between each scene. This has to be taken into consideration.

Perhaps it does lack a sense of travel or a sense of them going from place to place and I would agree that's something I'd want to see in the game. But the reviewer doesn't say that.

I'm fine with being unreasonable. Of all the snippets they showed they showed him playing it completely wrong and dumb. If those were the worst snippets, I can concede, that they showed them to make the reviewer look stupid and get hits on their site. Other than that I have no evidence that the reviewer knew what they were doing at all.
If a strategy is viable then it isn't wrong. A strategy is only wrong when it results in failure.

So they knew almost everyone else was going to give it a perfect score?

The fact that he posted his opinion about a game, is valid. There is no denying that. But the fact that he is practically the only person out of the myriad of other reviewers who posted such a low score, makes me think what is going on in their right mind.

He must have felt somewhere that this game is good. Something that not every game touches.

You can say that reviews are opinions, which they are, but a reviewer of games also has to keep in mind that even though the game does not cater towards his interests, it does not automatically make it a subpar game.

Yes same reviewer. I find him spot on to my gaming tastes.

He talks about how hard it is to take on enemies head-on, and how that difficulty level makes the game less enjoyable.

All the extremely positive reviews talk about how they loved that you couldn't take on enemies head on and had to use stealth.

It sounds like he straight-up was just doing it wrong.

Just preordered for £35 was very tempted to get it off Tesco because I could've gotten The Last of Us and Soul Sacrifice for £58 but I really can't afford it :P

Glad to see an overwhelming positive response to this. Will definitely pick it up down the line. Naughty Dog is one of the best. Not at all surprised by Colin Moriarty's review haha.

Spoilers being dropped now?

Guys I don't want to avoid this thread, I wanna continue hyping up TLoU with ya'll till release!!!

Everytime I click this thread I learn something new about the game. I'm done. See you guys in two weeks.

Edit: Avoid post 8311

Already read it :'(, not that big of a give away, but it would've been nice to be completely surprised by that. Looks like I'm out, I'll report back next Saturday since I'll likely be done with the game by then. While still gushing over E3.

Is there an option for "chapter select"?
I'm not sure people wanna know exact details as its s review thread after all. But anyone having questions can of course shoot off a PM - I won't share spoilers or anything that will spoil the experience though.

I also think I'm quitting this thread as people are starting to post a few spoilers (?) that I don't wanna read. So send me PM's if you guys got questions.

For those who are playing, what is the ratio of Human/Infected ennemies you encounter in the game? I would personally much prefer being up against more humans than Infected. Wish the game could have been more like "the Book of Eli" in this sense, instead of having infected mushrooms brain eaters in the game. lol

Really hard to tell actually. I'd say around
60%
humans perhaps? But humans go down easy, infected are serious business :p Good pacing though, and mixes it up really well.

Edit: upon additional reflection, make that
75%
humans.

All the talk about headphones, you guys enjoy it, I'll be rockin these instead :D

So would I be better off using my speakers or my headphones?

Okay, this has been bothering me. Wasn't the Last of Us supposed to be released June 11th or was it always the 14th?

Either way, I really didn't want to buy this game day one but I think I might...hopefully it doesn't interferes with my studies...

For anyone who has played the game, did you witness the AI beg for their lives or run when you had a gun and they didnt? Theres a shit load of vids on youtube and I have not seen that happen once.

There was a clip of it happening in the short clips Gamersyde put up.

Could be spoiling if you haven't seen anything in the past couple weeks:
There's a clip of a thug begging on the ground, and when you back away, he jumps back up to attack you.

edit: You were armed with a 2x4, not a gun, having watched it again to make sure lol

Sweet, thanks I thought that was an amazing part of the demo, they mentioned balance of power so I was really interested in that. @Soler then go with your speakers, no sense going half ass.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! I hope I didn't spoil myself! I was on that halo fansite reading the review comments for the 7/10 and someone mentioned something. Fucking shit. I'm not reading anything on game sites anymore.

If you have decent 5.1 speakers then go for them any day of the week. If they're shitty or you have any decent sort of headphones then go with them instead.

I wish I still had my little Onkyo 5.1 setup for this game, it's the type of game that NEEDS good surround sound to really make it shine. Those deep rumbles of the building in the demo would be badass on them. But my Beyerdynamic headphones will suffice, they're pretty beast

:(

This is why you don't go to shoddy sites.

I learned my lesson from /v/, so I was spoiled a long time ago.

One of the main reason why I'm just staying on gaf. I did watch sessler's review but I didn't browse the comments.

People are always crying about games being overrated by the press. There was just such a thread about Bioshock Infinite. I personally think GTA4(1st or 2nd highest metacritic ever) is a piece of shit. And it will shock no one when some posters on this very forum find fault with this game.

I bet I know which comment you mean, I just read the exact same one. Hope it isn't true and try to forget it!

So Polygon gives State of Decay an 8.5 and yet it has violence in it too.

This is one point higher than TLOU... They say they all discuss review scores around a table before it's published but I call bullshit.

Not to say State of Decay is a bad game by any stretch, I saw the Giant Bomb quicklook and it looked fun albeit extremely janky.

Does anyone here have the press kit? I'm trying to find out whether the packaging was designed from in-house at Naughty Dog or whether an outside studio did it.

From what I understand Polygon and Gamespot had similar complaints which were AI characters pulling them out of the immersion. Either they spoke when everything was supposed to be quiet or stood in the open and never got attacked. And those are fair points, in a game that is so heavily dependent on immersion and will pull it off really well, those moments would pull you out of the world a bit.

Also people were saying there were sections where you had to fight off waves of enemies and had you mowing down dudes all over the place and it clashed slightly with the rest of the game. That and you die so easily so enemy wave sections might be a bit annoying.

They're fair complaints if you ask me. Enemy waves piss me off too and sort of ruined sections of Tomb Raider for me
