I have been going a bit crazy on the LEGO front lately.

Here is my Christmas present to myself :)

That's the longest LEGO set ever, isn't it? If I was collecting Star Wars, then that would be one of the centerpieces of my collection (the others being the Death Star (3800 pieces!) and the Imperial Shuttle.

Speaking of which... the Imperial Shuttle is on sale at Amazon right now for $218.

Some of the many sets I owned.

And lots of Technic sets. A few other space and castle sets, but I figured I spammed this page enough with pics.

Yeah! I had a few of these ones. I remember having the police ship spaceshippy one too. Awesome. 80s and early 90s lego for the win! :D Born in 83 so these are the sets I grew up with.

As much as I like the new Death Star, I really want to build the original. I hear it was a bitch to build and keep together, but I REALLY like the ominous look and feel of it.

Its a shame I'm not into legos anymore because now I can actually afford to buy them.
Although the large architectural sets are VERY appealing. I would love that London Bridge one.
I still have all my old sets, including the old International Jetport and the Space shuttle launch pad set.

All I want is a LEGO St. Basil's Cathedral. If it ever happens, I'm all over it the day it's available. I've stood in front of it for real, and I want a LEGO version in my house BADLY.

There's requests for Lego Zelda on the Cuusoo site.

I doubt it'll ever happen, but it could be great if done well.

Bought this for myself as well. Not starting it till Christmas...

least that's what I told myself. Resolve lasted about an hour. Finished up the first massive piece

Someday I'll bite the bullet and get a giant set. I've always wanted one since I was a kid. How do you all keep them dusted though? I kept out a few of my Harry Potter LEGO sets and they were a pain to dust without taking them apart.

I bought the new Death Star during the Cyber Monday sale. Nearly finished it, no idea where I'm going to put it when it's done - might have to leave it on the coffee table.

A can of compressed air.

There's an odd sense of accomplishment in not only finishing a giant set, but also after receiving the huge purchase. The Tower Bridge was my first giant set to date, but I fully intend to grab some of the other monsters. Very worth the investment (just keep the box/manuals/extra pieces!).

I feel like the Lego Millennium Falcon is calling to me. My sister told me she was getting me a "set" of something for Christmas so I naturally assumed it was Star Wars since that is my main interest. I searched for Star Wars set on Amazon and Lego sets popped up. I was surprised at how pricey they were.

Then I see this thread on the first page of gaf! I told my wife about it and let's just say we didn't see eye-to-eye on Lego. How do you explain Lego to someone that didn't grow up with it? In my mind it's a 3D puzzle, but others see it as a toy. At the end of the day, I'm just a guy that wants more Star Wars stuff on my shelf.

My fiance seems to not have a problem with my Lego addiction. I mean, she was with me when I bought Falling Water, and that took her by surprise at the price. But for my birthday this past year, she took me on the Frank Lloyd Wright tour in Chicago, so she sort of just accepted and went on with it.

We also went to the Lego store in Disney when I took her there last year - that's where I bought my first set in years. It was a Spongebob set, which is one of the only themes I truly "collect", and she knows how obsessed I am with him. :) That also sort of eased her into it.

Also, if you ever intend to have kids, that helps, haha. She sees my collection and obsession as something I'll be able to enjoy with our kids one day. And really, I'm excited to! I grew up playing with Lego, K'Nex, Lincoln Logs, etc., and it's something I want my kids to experience, too. It definitely played a role in me pursuing the career path I did (structural engineer).

Oh, and you could also compare it to whatever sort of "thing" she buys for herself out of enjoyment. It's only fair that if she buys herself a new pair of shoes, a new purse, etc relatively often, that you be allowed to buy yourself a little something.

So I did some digging and found my LEGOLAND sets from the 80's. Police Station, Fire Station and Cargo Station. I would complete them but I'm missing a few key pieces. I'll try the LEGO website to see if they can send me replacements.

@Katana_Strikes, Awesome Bridge mate!!!

These are the ones I found.

This is the one I still need to find. It's around here somewhere.

So this is kind of a shot in the dark, but any lego-related gift ideas for someone who's really into maritime themed legos (she has tons of pirate ships and shit) but is extremely picky and probably has other people buying her similar lego stuff?

Lego store gift card?

E: I say that simply because after the holidays, she can go pick up the sets she wanted but didn't get. :)

There's a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean stuff out there, boats, islands etc. Because it's licensed it's kinda pricey though, so you could check amazon or ebay for the Lego Pirate theme stuff instead.

Imperial flagship.

Even if she has one, you can never have enough Imperial flagships!

Is it weird that a grown man buys LEGO? Because im thinking about doing it tomorrow, need some for my collection, but don't wanna have dem eyes on me.

Suddenly, LEGO.

Buckets of them. The desire in my mind to go and buy them and donate them to a toy drive. Every kid should have a chance to play with legalized caltrops masquerading as building blocks. I love them a lot, but fuck stepping on them.

Trust me, you will not weird looks. Besides, at this time of year no one will question it because they might assume you are buying it for your kid or niece/nephew.

There is a CREATOR series lighthouse which is really nice. It has a working light inside that rotates 360.

I have also seen a nice British navy style ship being sold at the Lego store.

The Lego VIP card is nice. It's free, and you tally up credit that you can use anytime in the store. I have $30 to use already, and I think I'm going to try and save up to get the Robie House with it.

I've had some awesome conversations with the workers at the Lego store by me. It really just depends on how you carry yourself in there - don't be awkward or creepy-like.

I've actually made suggestions to couples buying stuff for their kids, too. They really appreciate it, as well. And I spoke to an older couple when I bought the VW Van. The older gentlemen and I talked about his days of traveling the country in a VW Van with his band, haha. It was awesome.

So no, no shame - enjoy the experience!

There is, for some reason, a Lego shop in my small home town. I went there this summer and had a look, they have loads of huge sets built up.

Couldn't resist grabbing a pack of minifig reissues... I'm a bit annoyed that the "1979" yellow spaceman uses the modern helmet made for a visor, rather than the tincan helmet they used to have.

I'm not going to get any of those ridiculously expensive things though. Too many other nostalgia related purchases to be made.

Oh, and those City and Space sets were the generation before mine. I had a bunch of spacecraft that were mostly gray and black. After that, they started doing themes, first with those awesome black/yellow ships and later on Space Police.

Here are some pics of my collection, and some recent purchases.

My first ever "big" lego set, about 2 years ago or so...

And here are some more recent purchases, many of them due to holiday sales going on as I find them...

I actually have gotten two of these, because I want to modify the set, and make a full front and back Roman style Temple, minus all the Atlantis underwater stuff.

After ammassing a good amount of stray parts, mainly from buying a few cups of the loose legos at the store, I have found what I think is one of the best Lego storage containers I have seen. I tried using tackle boxes before, but the flimsiness of the cover would inevitably cause the lego to fall into adjacent containers.

This is a cantilever storage case they sell at Home Depot.

I have held this thing upside down, and shook it, and the pieces stay in their respective space.

Nice grabs! The Sphinx stuff is awesome, and I REALLY hope they do another Egyptian theme sometime.

I use the cheap shoebox looking containers from Wal-Mart for storage. Once you have a collection that exceeds 10000 and like to sort for MOC'ing, it's nice to be able to separate to a more fine scale. Those tackle box style cases are nice, but for larger collections of pieces and quick access, it's less convenient for me.

E: I also REALLY want to grab a few of those Atlantis sets....The Roman column looking pieces are AMAZING for MOCs.

I had this when I was a kid, my Mom got it for me for my birthday/xmas gift...my favorite set ever, would like to find another set and build it again (or get instructions and try to scratch build it).

Holy shit I had this set as well, the sense of achievement I had when I finished it was huge. I used to play with it for hours, oh the nostalgia!

NICE!! My favourite set as well. I also received it for Christmas and would spend HOURS making it, breaking it and then making other ships, cars, boats, whatever I could think of. I still have the set somewhere, I just need to locate it.

I read the Bloomberg article; it's a really good read, and I'm interested to see how Lego Friends does in the future.

Recently, I was at a Barnes and Noble for Christmas shopping and was surprised to see they'd dedicated a fairly large amount of floor space to Lego, complete with a play area for kids. I don't know if this is a permanent thing or just for the holidays, but Lego must be doing pretty well these days if a mostly-book retailer is putting together such a large area for it. Granted, this was a pretty large B&N at a mall, but it was still surprising.

Yeah, I have already had to buy two of those cases. $30 each isn't bad though. And for larger pieces, I have been recycling the cups from the Lego store loose piece purchases. Those snap tight and hold pretty well.

I bought this as a litlle xmas pressie for myself. Loved the civillain castle stuff from the 80s, so cant wait to open this up. Love the goat/hen/pig pieces.

This one looks cool. Can I find this at a Toys R Us? This thread has got me in the mood to go and get some Legos and after looking up the Kingdom's sets, this was my favorite.

It's amazing to see all the hate generated on the Interwebs about it. Somehow Lego has become a force for evil because they've dared release a series targeted at one gender.

It's like these people slept through Lego's Hero Factory sets (directly targeted at power-play boys). Or the Belleville sets which were also targeted at girls and were way less creative than these new sets.

I think this is a brilliant move by Lego. Almost subversive, too. When I think of all those mums I've heard saying "nah, couldn't get my daughter Lego, there's nothing for girls" ... and now there's stuff that's specifically in that market and it's actually got scope for creativity... yeah, subversive :-)
