A comparison of the modular buildings (not mine):

It's beautiful. I totally get the appeal of owning all of the modulars. I really hope the upcoming Haunted House is part of the modular line instead of Monster Fighters.

Has anyone Bricklink'd pieces for the UCS Death Star II? How much did it cost?

I've considered it. Death Star II is one model I absolutely need to build one day.

Probably not that bad, other than the laser color pegs, I would not imagine that it has many special pieces.

I need some Bricklink help.

I've been placing quite a few orders off Wanted lists but items don't seem to be taken off the list once ordered (is that right???) so I have to go back and remove them.

What I want to do is download my orders into Excel but when I generate the list it comes up with no details.

What do I need to change here:

I'm thiking the empty cells should list the parts I odered?

LEGO has posted a voting site for the next round of architecture designs:

http://architecture.lego.com/en-us/inspire-us/

I know people have asked for St. Basil’s Cathedral in this thread. I don't how if it would be as nice in an architecture set though. I think I'd rather see it as a creator line like the Taj Mahal.

Cool, I like that they are putting this to a vote! Hopefully the winner will inspire Lego to create the set (and do it a bit more justice than Opera House). Now, what to vote for?

I am bummed to say I had to return my unopened Super Star Destroyer to the LEGO shipyards today. My living situation has changed and I am moving to a new place. I don't have a good place to fit the SSD (assembled or otherwise) and frankly I could use that $440 for covering moving costs or putting it toward some new furniture. I also had to part with my UCS Star Destroyer. :/ Bittersweet.

The LEGO store has a pretty awesome return policy. No questions asked refunds on unopened items for 90 days provided you keep the receipt.

Wow, imgur really compresses the crap out of photos. Anyway, this will be my last build for a few months. After this, the X-Wing, Slave 1 and a new Meier headphone amp I need to put the wallet away for a while!

Looks like there's a couple of cool printed pieces in that set. Also seems to have a good collection of larger plates - very useful for base structure MOC building!

That Millennium Falcon set is rad. Really reminds me of the Kenner version I had as a kid. Even though I don't collect the SW line, I may jump on it anyway, just because it looks so darn awesome and fun.

Wow, this pic helps to remind me how far Lego instructions have come. I've had an ongoing inventory project with my collection going back about 15 years, and man, the manuals could be really awful! In some of the older sets, it basically comes down to a game of 'spot what's different between these two pics' with each step in the build. I've even had a few missteps with Green Grocer this weekend, which is fairly recent, because I couldn't tell what colors the directions were asking for. Recent instructions have been great with telling you exactly what you need, with colors that seem more distinct.

While I agree they need to do a better job on shades, specifically dark grey and black. Almost impossible to tell apart unless there is past reference on that step.

I do wonder why they don't have some kind of color reference key in the manuals. They could add it in a nice table or something at the beginning, showing and naming each color, and then providing an example of that color.

Now I am on the fence. Town Hall now with double VIP (my first VIP order!), or Grand Emporium off Amazon since they have it in stock again?

Town Hall. The VIP points would equate to $20 off your next purchase, which is still less than tax (assuming you aren't paying 10%+ taxes!). Amazon Prime GE is retail without taxes and shipping, but no long term benefits. I only buy Amazin sets if the price is greater than 10-15% off retail, otherwise it doesn't add up in the long run for me.

3 plates = 1 brick, right?

I'm playing around with pick a brick at the online shop but they don't have the 2x10 brick, just 2x10 plates, so if I stack 3 of them, that'll do, right?

Dang, I was trying to get all the Death Star II pieces from the Lego shop, but there are a ton that are out of print so I may have to use Brinklink, it just seems so complicated and you never really know what kind of condition the pieces are going to be in.

2x10 plate is east to take apart, pretty much anything longer than 4 is.

LEGO designers should be kicked in the crotch if they double up on the smaller ones though.

It made me cringe so many times as I built the Imperial Shuttle and put together the 2x1 bricks. So much pain to come.

And just to make life easier, I ordered a brick separator with my Town Hall just seconds ago. One looks to come with Town Hall, so I got a second one.

So excited to build, and so not excited to be broke again. I pray for my wife's forgiveness.

Congrats! Looking forward to reading your impressions.

The TH does come with a separator, but it's the smaller variety - I prefer the larger one that you can buy separately, so good call!

man those modulars look amazing all together like that. fuck, I'm not going to be able to resist finally getting one, am I?

How often does Lego do double VIP points?

I will post tons of pics like I did with Fire Brigade.

Speaking of which, I got bored last night and put all my Star Wars mini figures on the Fire Brigade. I need to take pics still, but yeah...Vader and Obi Wan fighting on the stairs. Vader is on the roof, slicing down onto Obi Wan on the stairs as he comes up. Han and Leia hanging around the back of the firehouse sneaking time. Two Imperial officers highjacking the fire engine. A Tie Fighter pilot sliding down the pole to work. A stormtrooper holding up the fire chief on the stairs. Porkins raiding the fridge. Chewy and an Imperial Officer playing ping pong...

Yes. I was bored.

Double VIP is until the 15th. Free shipping just began and goes until the 31st. In other words, order NOW! Look back at my post a few pages ago with all the pics of the small details. It is really about the tiny flourishes in the set. Things that you don't realize are there until you build it. Shit, you can see many of the touches in pics but it doesn't sink in until you build it. Just genius design.

I was so against them, but after the Fire Brigade I am in love. Seriously. Great sets, or greatest sets?

DOOO IIIIIT (no pressure ;) I really don't think you'll have any regrets. The modulars are such fun builds filled with variety and unique techniques. Good stuff.

And the modulars have some of the best price per brick ratios out there. That is my easy justification for it. I think the only thing that puts it to shame for price per brick is Tower Bridge.

How would everyone rank the modulars?

For me it's Pet Shop > Green Grocer > Fire Brigade > Cafe Corner > Grand Emporium > Town Hall.

Grand Emporium and Town Hall just seem to have too much repetition to be that interesting. Cafe Corner looks awesome but no interiors hurts it. And Pet Shop seems really awesome because it's two buildings in one.

I really don't want to buy a modular because I know if I get one I'll want them all.

Excellent point as well. Great bang for your buck. And depending where you buy the sets, (no tax, free shipping on Amazon; VIP from Lego direct, etc.) there are even more ways to save money or earn better incentives on the larger sets.

Out of curiosity, I checked my Amazon account, where I primarily purchased Lego until the VIP program, to see what I paid for the earlier modulars. Green Grocer only cost me $137 back in 2009. :O

Hmm, good question! I can only rank the ones I've built so far. I have GE and PS in my backlog, and still need to pick up TH. So for me, I think my ranking goes something like this:

Fire Brigade > Green Grocer > Market Street > Cafe Corner (reverse order of release, heh)

I might be alone in my love for Fire Brigade, but it completely captures that quintessential old fire station feel. My grandfather was also a lifelong firefighter, and being exposed to the whole world of it really left an impression. One that Fire Brigade succeeded in replicating.

I suspect Pet Shop will probably fall in third, with Grand Emporium right behind it, once I finish them. My feelings towards Town Hall are lukewarm at the moment. I’m in no rush to purchase it. I was hoping for a town hall model more in line with the version included in set 10184 Town Plan (or basically styled like the hall in Back to the Future). As it is, I feel they could have released it as a school and no one would have batted an eye.

So I haven't even started building Pet Shop yet but think I want to go further down the rabbit hole and just go ahead and buy Fire Brigade while it is double VIP and free shipping. Plus I have a decent amount of VIP from when I bought Pet Shop. Does anyone want to help out by buying some Amazon Credit?

Town Hall looks to be the most boring build, but the sheer size of it fascinates me. Grand Emporium looks like the most fun. Repetitive, but neat details to repeat.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. WTF?

I signed up for VIP weeks ago. I signed in on Lego.com before placing my order for Town Hall an hour or so ago. Now I try and log in and it says I have nothing, yet I have been charged for my order. What gives?

I got my first VIP points about the time I actually received my order, which was about 5 days after I paid for it, So it appears the points do not show up instantly. Be patient my friend :D

Phew. Was about to be pissed! That is the only reason I ordered off of Lego.com and not Amazon. It better show. But they seem like they have good customer service, so if I called and talked to them they would probably put the points there.

Yeah, that's exactly it. The second and third floors look rather repetitious, and that was my biggest complaint with Cafe Corner. But unlike CC, Town Hall has an interior to make up for it, so I'm trying to stay optimistic. (I'm also not overly fond of the orange, but the color variety it will add on the whole street lineup with be nice.)

I think when all is said and done though, Green Grocer will probably still edge out as the best. It's just a lovingly created set with so many fantastic details everywhere you look.

This is where the brick seperator comes into it's own. I have one old style and one new (they each have their time to shine) and when used in combination one on top and one below on a pair of 1x2's it's childs play.

my first Pick a Brick adventure.
so on friday after work I undertook the trek to go to the nearest LEGO store, 2hours by public transport.
of course it had to happen that I was disappointed by the selection there. but never the less I decided to make the most of my visit and fill up a large cup (15.99€)

so here comes a quick dissection
le cup

the contents

as a test I wanted to see what I would have fit without the smart brick stacking employed, I would have lost quite a bit of the larger pieces

Counting only the large (non-flat) pieces it cost me 0.045€ per piece, pretty good imho (total of 354 "large" pieces)

counting all the small stuff to I end up at a price of 0.02€ per piece (total cup content over 600 pieces)
happy with that :)

and as a final comparison I wanted to see how full the cup is when filling it with a 20€ Creator set. very loosely droped in
