Man, finally some (somewhat) fair currency exchanges for that awesome looking haunted house.

Though it makes me a bit sad as the Fire Brigade is also $200CDN but retails for $150US.

I throw the box away.

I do too. The only boxes that I still have (or wish I still had) are the old ones with the plastic tray inside and the flap on the front you can lift to see all the cool shit inside.

I have little to no interest in actually selling the sets I buy now - I've kept all of my Lego from when I was a kid and the ones I'm buying now will be played with by my daughter and other kid (boy or girl). And me, of course, as I'll never be too old for it.

I really don't think I'd want to sell my Lego to the kind of person who would require the box, either.

the haunted house is awesome and all, but i was a little bored so i digitally pimped it a little ;)

I added lego 4191 (pirates of the carribean), ghost clock polybag, a couch and kitchen furniture from lego friends and the organ from the vampire caste to the interior design - a cool looking organ is TOTALLY missing from this set!

Haha cool, I can't imagine it would cost much to extend that fence, the pieces used in it don't look that rare.

My ghostbusters are gonna have a field day with this one

Feel for his laptop. It'll feel like a smooth 2x2 flat plate. Feel for the handle of his mug for another confirmation.

i found him by feeling for his c:\ cup, about the size of a head but with a handle. t'was easy.

Cup is the best. Laptop is also better, but it's flat, could get stuck between instructions. Cut is better.

Thanks again everyone. I finally had time to look today, and the first one I picked up was it. Felt around for all the tips and sure enough it felt like it.

I used to be huge into legos as a kid/young teen, even had the very first Mindstorm set. I knew they were coming out with these LOTR sets and just thought it might be cool and nostalgic to get a couple sets and then while browsing them saw these Monster Fighter sets and even geeked out enough to look at some youtube reviews of the sets. They look pretty cool, especially that Ghost Train set.

then I started seeing the prices for these sets and wow, I really can't afford to pick this up as a hobby at these prices for something that would just sit on my shelf. I'm thinking of maybe picking up that LOTR Shelob attacks set because its cheap, has a cool looking spider and comes with Frodo, Samwise and Gollum and ring.

nice. now if only B&N had the great shipping and no-tax that amazon has :/ because that is pretty amazing. thanks for the notice! They are installing a Target near me, so hopefully soon I can start picking up some of their specials :)

It's pretty shocking how expensive they've actually become. I was watching a review on the new gungan sub which is going to be $69.99 (reportedly), and the reviewer went on to mention that the original gungan sub, which had about 100 fiewer pieces, was $25 when it came out in 1999. So prices have more than doubled in that time! It's actually close to 2.5x

That's not to say you can't find some great deals if you are patient and look around. You can get almost any set for 25% off or more with the right timing. If you are less patient, 10 or 15% sales are pretty common.

A few of the cooler sets, like Shelob, make great display pieces if you don't want to break the bank. It's a very iconic scene that would be a welcome addition to any Tolkien fan's shelf

Dear LegoGAF,

BUY! BUY! BUY! Seriously. Such an awesome set, and an amazing display piece when it is complete. This is probably the only set outside of the modulars that will be a permanent fixture on display.

And also, I am now at a crossroads with my Cafe MOC. I posted pics of the split spiral staircase a few days ago, now I am at the point of trying to figure out how to connect it with the next floor or to simply get it to come together to finish the first floor.

I have been doing minor tweaks for an hour or so. Will post pics when I figure it out.

Like already stated, they are slightly more expensive than say, a little desktop figure or something (unless you compare to the figures over at geek-GAF!). But you are getting something significantly more playable and creative than a typical "toy".

As with any hobby, it can get expensive if you let it. But finding a set or a theme or a style you love and sticking to that for a while helps cut down the cost at first. And really, the creative discovery that building any set takes you on far surpasses the high price figures and memorabilia.

Bottom line, if there's a set that catches your eye that you'd love to display, don't let it get away and turn into a missed opportunity. Always consider LEGO an investment and not a purchase! ;)

Yea as a LOTR fan thats why it rekindled my interest in Lego. And I would love to have all the sets displayed on a shelf, but as this link shows

http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-The-Lord-of-the-Rings-Collection-5001132 It's $350 to get all the sets, which is just way too much for me. Especially for someone balancing Transformers, comic books and video games.

i would love to have that Ghost Train to display at Halloween time but again, $80 bucks, its not even the castle. I do think i'm going to pick up that shelob set from Amazon though. I'd like to have gandalf to but 12 bucks just to get him, don't care about the cart and horse.

SCORE! Figured out a nice solution to bring the dual spiral staircases together! I just wish I had the bricks I used in a different color to do it. Now to put the finishing touches on the first floor of my MOC. Will post pics when done.

None of the LOTR sets really grabbed me.

I'd kill to see a UCS Minas Tirith though... even if it ended up costing $500+

God yes. I didn't actually know what sets were out but i saw the the Lego LoTR game trailer and saw Balrog and thought oh shit I want a set with him and would love a set with the beast in the lake as well and then was really disappointed when I saw what sets they actually made. No Rohan/Oliphant sets, no Witchking/Fell Beast sets, just lots of orcs and walls. And Weathertop, with missiles??

At least there's hope for a Smaug The Hobbit set.

I don't know why, but I just imagined building a massive Lego Minas Tirith set as a sort of bed frame.

I want it now. NOW!

Anyways, MOC progress for the night:

I think it needs a bit more flair on the front. Thinking of adding lights and whatnot to the front. Maybe clipping them onto the rails for weird angles.

Split Spiral stairs meeting at the top. I plan on adding another step or two at the top once the top layer of the first floor is done.

Underside of staircase. Two lamps, and an adujustable spotlight to shine on the stage area.

Backside of building. For now. Might add some detail at the back.

The "cafe" sign on the front. I did the offset using the jumper plates like recommended on here. Using the 1x1 bricks with bars running at different angles, I closed the gap. The other pic is the backside of the sign.

Overhead shot of the first floor. I need to add one or two more plate layers to hold it all together and then it is off to the second floor.

Espresso bar and stage for open mic night. What is that Snowtrooper doing hanging around an incomplete building?

Great work phonciple

If you want to add more bling to the front I would suggest adding the handle bar things from over the windows o under the cafe sign, then you can light the sign from below.

Ah, nice idea. Dont think I will add them directly from below. It would throw off the lines on the front. But can have the ones right next to them tilted to show the sign.

Thanks!

made my first trip to the lego store. was quite a long trip for me so i didn't want to leave empty handed, the architecture series looked pretty interesting and i was down to deciding between big ben and farnsworth house and went with the latter.
all the other ones looked too abstract or uninteresting or too expensive (falling water, so want)

but damn, if they had the space needle, i would've gone with that no doubt

I grabbed three more series 7 figures. I felt weird trying to feel the packages at Target, so I just grabbed a few random ones that felt unlike the ones I already had. Ended up with Space Marine and 2 Tarzans.

Needle looks cool, as do most of the architecture sets, but for that price per brick they're just not worth it.

Tip - don't buy used Lego that ships assembled. I just opened my emerald night, looking forward to building it, and it was already built. I hadn't realised when I bought it. It's a very disappointing feeling. I've broken down the engine to rebuild, but it's a bit strange having already had it in my hands.

I guess it'd be ok if you could get someone else to break it down for you.

Just got the B&N 30% off coupon for signing up my son for the kid's club. Now, I wonder what set "he" would like? I'm thinking either the Superman giant robot or Batman/Joker helicopter.

I don't mind the breaking down part, I use it to clean the often dusty parts and stuff like that.

Anyway the log cabin is a nice little set, and the hulk enjoys himself some holiday :)

OK, Haunted House looks awesome. I'm always a fan of houses that fold out so I'm happy that this model also does this.

Also I don't mind the mix of monsters. I have a few old ghosts and skeletons if I need to populate it and it's nice to get a selection from one purchase since I don't see myself buying many of the other monster sets.

Putting aside the money now.

sold my bricklinked UCS falcon and broke even. I didn't have the space to display it, so it was a fun life experience. The guy that got it was super excited to add it to his UCS Star Wars collection, so that's nice too.

Now I've got some cash to burn at the Charlotte Lego store. I've been eyeing the VW bus hard.

Congrats on the sale. I love that set also but there is no way I could buy it. Just way to big.

gah, getting the Helm's Deep set for $106 was to good to pass up. Now I just need that Uruk-Hai set and I'll have them all.

Have any details on the UCS B-Wing been released yet?

You will want to pay attention to the San Diego Comicon, for both the expected B-wing reveal as well as some 2013 sneak-peeks.

i never considered the bricks/price aspect. like, ever, when it comes to picking sets. maybe as a tie breaker criteria, but defin not a primary thing.
i just thought the space needle looked cool and really really looked like the space needle. plus it's mostly funky pieces and not normal bricks and would make an for an interesting, albeit short, build.

Price per brick is mainly a consideration for MOCers.

I don't care too much about price per brick either. I mainly buy sets that will look nice on display, like Mini Modulars, the VW T1 Camper Van, and (soon) the Sopwith Camel. Of course I want to get a good deal, but I don't use price per brick as a "reason" to buy something.

Wow, how long is that B&N Helm's Deep + Coupon Code deal going to last? That's too good to pass up, but I'll have to wait another week before I can order it.
