The Mortal Kombat Spoilers Thread of ... spoilers in a fighting game?

Quan Chi has the 2nd best X-Ray in the game. That alone makes him a worthy character to keep in the game.

He also has one of the best Fatalities. I love it when he beats the shit out the opponent with his own leg.

I am wondering about the opening. In the MKA opening Onaga flew off with Shao Khan and Blaze appeared. In the new opening Raiden and Khan are the last ones. Based on the story line where the hell is Onaga and Blaze? They should be have at least been in the intro since they got it right with Zombie Lou Kang and Shang Tsung at the top of the pyramid.

It's probably easy to assume that Shao Kahn takes out Onaga after being grabbed by him and returns to the battle. Not sure about Blaze though. He was probably either destroyed by Kahn or maybe Taven? If I remember correctly, Taven's ending has Blazes power flow to the other combatants. Though in this game's intro, we see Shao Kahn get powered up, but not Raiden...

Kahn's ending in MKA has him killing Onaga and Blaze and becoming super strong and merging every realm with Outworld...then he goes crazy from boredom because he killed everyone so there's no one left to fight. So it sounds like this game takes the first part of that ending as canon.

I was hoping to see him summon skeletal warriors or something. His other fatality is pretty boring.

Did the Liu Kang and Kung Lao endings last night. Kung Lao's was a huge retcon.

It makes me think that the next game may be a prequel or at least have a prequel part to it. It'd justify having Raiden, Shinnok, Shao Kahn, Onaga, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Sindel, Fujin, Kung Lao, Kitana and Goro in it. Remember that Raiden had his whole spiel about being responsible for the death of an entire civilization in MK4's intro, maybe we'll see that.

Do we think that the endings from Ladder mode are canon at all? I thought maybe it would go

Story Mode -> Ladder Endings -> Next MK Game

or something. Since so far none of the Ladder endings have conflicted at all.

Who was the woman in Jade's ending? She looked like Li Mei but she had powers beyond that of hers, I think. Maybe Ashrah? >_>

I am sure it's a new character, though.

Given how epic Story Mode is, I wonder how NR plans to follow it up in a Mortal Kombat sequel. They've risen the bar, and I expect the next MK to follow the same presentation format.

I'd love if the next game tells the equivalent of MK 4, 5 and 6 inside the story mode. But please, tone down the terrible character designs who bog down the roster.

I agree with the people that don't like the art style. I was hoping that the style would be more dark and gritty like this game, but with an MK character designs.

Yes this game did suck but at least it had a gritty and realistic style that reminded me of the old MK games.

Got to 150/300 challenges this morning without skipping. Too much fun!
Another 200 challenges (for an even 500) and a challenge editor would make for an amazing DLC.
Might also be a nice way to backdoor a "vs. CPU" mode as well. (A challenge with no mods)

BTW: I've used the "infinite koins" trick on every challenge that supports it so far, it works well.
I'm @ 350K Koins from that and haven't unlocked anything but the 4 secret krypt locations.

What's in the secret krypts and what are they?

I think it's just the 4 hidden chests that contain 5k each.

Indeed, I just followed the guide to find them to build the koin count.
I'm going to one-shot the whole Krypt after I finish the Tower.

What about the guy who transforms kabal even more in his ending? The guy who gave kano his cybernetic eye?

I bet he's in the next mk

Make sure you take your time and enjoy the ambience. Turn the volume up, too.

Yea, the style was realistic and gritty (minus some of the character designs). Did you play the game?
I did. The game had bad design and worse gameplay. It was like a shit version of Tekken or some sort of other 3D fighter.

Also, I wonder what game everyone was playing that was the "dark, gritty" MK. I only remember purposeful corniness...

A bit confused here by what people are constituting as non dark and realistic about MK9's art style.

Is this that "photo realistic human modeling = dark and gritty" thing again?

Boon wanted a game that looked akin to Gears of War. MK9 pretty much goes that way... the characters faces are about as stylized. The backgrounds/environments are downright morbidly macabre and very realistic. The blood, gore, fatalities, and character damage is the least cartoony of any game in the series.

I have only seen a video of a bablity being done on one. I just assumed if it was possible to get a "finish him" on a boss and do a bablity, what's to stop the player from inputting a fatality? We know that the bosses' models have the same structure (bones, innards, etc.) as playable characters.
I was playing as Smoke on Ladder (on either Medium or Expert, don't recall) and got to Shang Tsung on 1 credit and performed a Babality on him. Then when I beat Goro, Smoke automatically performed a Babality on him after I got the final hit in. I didn't even get time to put in any commands.

Unrelated, but while I'm posting I might as well ask: in either this topic or the official one someone posted a vid of some talkshow about a guy named Smoke and how he was a cheating on his girl. In the vid the fragments of the guy were replaced with fragments of MK Smoke. I skimmed both threads and couldn't find it anymore. Does anyone happen to have it at hand?

So was it just me or was the story in this game a bit too much of a bloodbath ?

I mean discounting Kratos and future DLC, there are 27 kombatants.

By the end of story mode nearly half of them have been killed, will they write in a resurrection potion for the next entry , perhaps have all the dead guys be stuck on the nether realms side?

By my count this is who is left alive-
Good Guys - Sonya, Johnny Cage , Raiden , smoke ?
Out World Goons - Mileena, Baraka, Reptile, Kano, Ermac , Shiva
Netherrealm - Scorpion, Noob Saibot , Quan Chi

Souls Owned by the Netherrealm - Stryker, Kabal, Jax, Kitana, Sindel, Jade, Nightwolf , Cyber Sub-zero, Cyrax, Sektor, Kung Lao possibly even Lui Kang

Absorbed into sindel and possibly gone- Shang Tsung

Bosses killed- Motaro, Shao Kahn

Goro and Kintaro are never shown to be killed.

Forthcoming DLC is adding Scarlett and Blind Kenshi, possibly playable bosses at some point, but we can't really count them as part of the story yet.

So what's going to happen with the lore next game? If I had to wager a guess I'd say at least some of those dead guys are coming back , fully resurrected in some way and the rest will be part of shinooks undead netherrealm soldiers.

With this game out of the way, would you rather a bunch of new characters show up or bring in some of the craptacular newer characters from MK5/6 ?

I had a question about Sub Zero's chapter in story mode. When we first see him, he's freezing something (or someone?). Anyone know what that's about? They never show what he was freezing.

I'd like to see the next MK focus on freeing those souls trapped in the Netherealm for the looming battle with Shinnok and Quan Chi... then proceed to have that battle play out to it's conclusion.

A few new characters would be nice, but the MK team does not have a strong track record of character design after MK3. Heck, this reboot contains no new character for a reason. Fans didn't like the new guys.

Probably some random guards. I think they're in the background of that stage naturally?

No way we're seeing an MK game without Sub-Zero, Smoke, Jax, Kitana, Liu Kang, AND Kung Lao. Too many popular characters.

Quite frankly, I'll be damned if there's no Sub-Zero and I have to settle for Frost.

Agreed. I'm not sure if Cyber Sub Zero cuts it. I wonder if Noob being tossed into the Soulnado will somehow allow him to become Sub Zero once more.

Challenge #251 seems very impossible, I've probably played it around 20 times only managing to get Shao Kahn down to half-way health before dying. The problem is that Tsung doesn't really seem to have any attacks, cheesy attacks to spam, if I had Kung Lao, Ermac, Cyrax, etc. Someone who could teleport, he would be a lot easier. I can't cheese my way through the match, Baraka is very annoying with his wakeup attacks, but the Soul Steal makes him bearable, Sheeva likes to combo a lot, but Shao Kahn is the real issue.

I do the typical, jump over, uppercut, repeat. Two of his moves can break this, his hammer uppercut, and his air ram. Two of which I can't seem to avoid. Has anyone else finished this that doesn't mind lending advice, or a video?

Thank you Ermac.

I cleared the challenge tower yesterday. I was fearing that last battle, but it was actually a lot of fun! Not sure what the hardest challenge was for me. Took me a while to get past triple Goro.

I think that was one of the hardest ones for me too, because I hate playing as Shang Tsung. Other hard ones for me were the one where you had to get 30 hits on an expert Kitana in a small amount of time, and later on the never-ending tilting round with Mileena (you'll see). Challenge 300 took less time for me than these 3.

So, for 251, I started using a simple 4 hit combo with Shang Tsung instead of using the jump punch, uppercut. I forgot the buttons, but I did a jump punch, 2 more punces, than straight into a forward fireball. And for Shao Kahn it's best to always try to jump behind him all of the time to try to do an uppercut or combo.

Thanks for the help, I just beat it cheesing fire skulls and keeping my distance, Enhanced Fire Skulls also work. It was partially out of pure luck, beating it after trying it 50 times.

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I've been working my way through story mode and just realized the different acts are basically retellings of the first three Mortal Kombats. Chaps 1-5 end with Liu Kang beating old Shang Tsung and 4 of the 5 characters are from the original game. Chaps 6-11 end with Liu Kang beating Shao Kahn, and I assume 12-end will be 3. (I'm currently on Cyber Sub-Zero's chapter.) I know I'm probably way late in this observation but I definitely like how they did that.

So far, I like Ermac and Smoke's alt costumes better than their originals, and I like non-cyborg Cyrax better than cyborg Cyrax. In fact, I think Cyrax is my overall favorite character to play with, with Smoke being second and Jade being third. I like Story Mode just because it makes me play with a bunch of characters I wouldn't have thought about playing with and I get to see their styles. Very interesting.

Also, holy shit at the Challenge Tower. I'm only at like Challenge 30 right now, 300 total? I doubt I'm going to get that achievement. Damn.

I finished story mode tonight. It was super cheesey, but still pretty cool. It was a very novel idea that I can't believe no other fighting game has done, as it really adds a single player “campaign” to a fighting game. This is the first MK I've bought since MK4 so I was kind of lost on some of the references to the latter game. I liked the retelling of MK1 and MK2. I thought the MK3 part was the weakest, as I think Sindel should have played a larger role. I didn't like how they had Raiden kill Liu Kang since he's such a central figure to the MK universe. I wish Kitana survived as well. I really wanted to see Johnny Cage get killed in the MK2 portion. That said since I have a rekindled interest in MK, think it'd worth it to pick up Anhilation and Armageddon? Wasn't there a third game in there somewhere?

There's Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon, and vs DC.

Armageddon may seem like a good deal with its full character roster, but it is a pretty shitty experience overall. Deadly Alliance and Deception are both pretty entertaining. Deception has like chess, puzzle kombat, and a really fun Konquest mode.

Its gonna be so sweet if they release MK1, MK2 and MK3 costume packs for the full roster. Looking forward to seeing Unmasked Sub-Zero, MK2 or MK3 Reptile, MK3 Shang and MK3 Stryker.

I dunno about an entire MK trilogy classic costume, but I am pretty sure that all characters will receive a classic costume...it just makes too much sense.
Honestly, at first, I though the biggest secret in this game was unlocking all classic costumes and classic fatalities, but since this is a DLC I think this is not how it is :(
