First tragedy, then farce.
Ok,

After much thinking and ruminating.. I've decided to order Merchants and Marauders as my "epic" game. I've played it twice and found it to be a fun game that scratches the right itch without insane playtime and a player count that is good enough.

Game of Thrones is probably all I really need for a wargamy thing. I like the idea of Eclipse/Runewars and similar but would never play them. Same reason I passed on Civ a few years ago. Great game I'd love to play, but would never actually happen.

I'm going to plug in Risk:Legacy to the order as well.

As an aside, if I like the idea of Troyes but want something with less symbology does anyone have recomendations? I'd like a nice dice pool game that isn't so focused on symbols that will turn off everyone who might ever play the game with me. I own Stone Age, but looking for something with more roll modification stuff and not just adding the pips together.

was worth a try but have just received the dreaded 'there's a problem with your order' e-mail from tesco re: TtR

I recommend getting over it :p Troyes is just that good.

But, if you insist.... have you played Castles of Burgundy?

Kingsburg has pretty basic roll modification (+2 tokens you can acquire, and a building that gives you the ability to +1/-1 to any die) and it would definitely play to a crowd for whom Troyes is too heavy. If you grab the expansion as well it's actually a moderately deep light game. Little bit more meat to it than Stone Age and Waterdeep.

The problem is I don't want a game that is lighter than Troyes.

I want a game that doesn't use completely obtuse symbology that is unique for almost every single card. I'm pretty sure a good chunk of the cards in the game have their own symbol that doesn't really appear elsewhere but is supposed to mean something.

Assuming you have memorized all of them.

I have 250$ of in store credit available to me at my local board game shop. I'm considering the following:

Dreadfleet
Ghost Stories
Descent 2nd Edition
Castle Ravenloft or any of the other 2 D&D board games
Gears of War Board Game

Any thoughts on which of the D&D games are the best?

What about Alien Frontiers?

What about Alien Frontiers?

I've looked at it and Ascending Empires both.

I'd like to play them to see if they have the feel I'm going for.

I know people who own both games. I've tried to get them to play the games with me several times, and each time right as we're about to play someone says "why don't we just play Troyes?"

Everyone turns on me.

Then we play Troyes.

Have you looked into Lords of Vegas? Awesome game. There are dice, but they represent your influence in casinos that are built and expanded throughout gameplay. The way dice are used work extremely well with the theme of the game.

This might be weird but are there any good single player board or card games out there??

Besides like solitaire....

Space Hulk: Death Angel is a fun solo game. Cheap too (20-25$). You can find some reviews and examples of play on Youtube. You can add a handful of expansions to the game as well.

I know it isn't the complex bit of gaming we're used to here, but I played Fluxx for the first time last night, and boy is that one confusing ass game sometimes. Had a rules question though. If a card makes it so there are now 2 goals, and the radioactive potato is out, when initially a 2nd goal is placed, is that considered the goal changing?

Also looking for more games my girlfriend's family might play, and Dice Tower is discussing Hey That's My Fish as a good gateway game. It's cheap enoug on Amazon that I'll impulse purchase, but want to know whether I should go with the regular or Deluxe version for like $7 more. If anyone has experience with it I'd appreciate any thoughts.

I heard a lot about this game, fill me in pleaze

It's like Pandemic in a way, up to 6 player coop. Fun game and worth your time. $25 on the kickstarter gets you both expansions and te 6 fire fighter figs which replace the cardboad tokens used in the original base game.

It's very much like Pandemic, only Flashpoint Fire Rescue has REPLACED Pandemic in my library. Pandemic had a tendency of coming to a complete halt while people calculated how to win in their heads, at the end of the game.

Flashpoint negates this by "spreading the disease (which is fire)" by using dice, rather than a deck (where you can see how many cards/turns are left).

My group loves Flashpoint Fire Rescue but if you don't like the random nature of dice, keep that in mind

How much would I need to kickstart to have a playable game? $25 someone mentioned for 2 expansions, do I still need the base game?

I buy too many damn games.

The kickstarter is just for the expansions.

The game you have to buy separate and is available in most online retailers now.

OK. Just wasn't sure if this was a stand alone expansion or something.

One last question. My gf and I enjoy Pandemic with just us 2, how does this compare as a 2 person game?

wow flashpoint looks cool my group loves co-op games.. I might have to pick it up.

would you guys recommend flash point over last night on earth?

Dungeon Crawler is a cool card game that's pretty much meant for solo play. The rules are pretty confusing, though. Once you get a grasp on them, it's excellent.

Also, Runebound is a very playable and exciting solo game. If you haven't heard of it, it's basically a game where you travel around on an over world map battling monsters to level up and kill the final boss. You collect money to buy gear and hire allies along the way. It's far from perfect, but it's a wonderful solo experience.

I thought that one of the kickstarter options included everything, I need to double check that I guess.
The $65 level gets you the entire thing. (Base game, the two expansions, and the new figures)

If people were wondering the expansions are just new maps. Each board is double sided to give you two different maps in one board. The second story expansion seems interesting in that they add a two story building into the mix.

Thats actually a hard question to answer.

Overall on its own merit for someone thats only ever gonna buy one of them, Legend of Drizzt is the best one.

However by a huge margin the best two to use together are Ravenloft and Ashardalon they have probably over 40 custom scenerios and drizzt game has a few but not nearly as many.On the geek the majority of work done to adding custom scenarios and mods have gone to Ravenloft and Ashardalon.

Ravenloft includes abunch of base monster tokens that each other game in the series adds too, but if you want to use a monster cup(like arkham horror) for drawing monsters and other variants you need ravenloft first to build from.

Ashardalon includes the basic campaign rules and Chamber tiles used to extend the game beyond just single scenarios.

As well it includes treasure tokens, both money and items that can be used for a treasure cup variant that lets you randomly collect gold as well as items.
Custom campaign mods use the gold for purchasing of items in between scenarios

Heres pic of the custom Drizzt Character that uses the Mod campaign system to allow leveling to 5th.

The one really nice thing about these games is it doesn't need a player dedicated to the GM role, however its base game design is abit to simple and limited.
Adding in the mods really just makes the game feel abit more like Dnd and come alive without being bogged down and making it overly complex.

Gonna try out Flash Point. Find that theme of Pandemic is love it or hate it so hopefully Flash Point can be a good gateway.

what version of runebound is the base? or the best version to pick up first?

Last Night on Earth isn't really co-op, it's teams.

gotcha. thanks!

So,

Straw Poll time.

How well do y'all think Express 01 would do in the United States? Would you be interested in a card based 18xx game for 40-45 dolalrs that plays in 60 minutes?

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with anything... it's strictly for my own curiosity.

Yesterday I finally had the chance to stay late at game night:

-Started out with one quick hand of Mystery Rummy. First time I've played it with three after learning it this weekend. Man it's a fun light game. If you are into more "traditional" card games, this is a great tweak on that. Lost that hand because two of us were chasing the Ripper strategy and had the cards the other needed, so the investigator-strategy guy went out easily.

-Then played a 6p game of 7 Wonders + Leaders. Really thought I was going to lose because I had to burn like four or five cards for money and the guy next to me had 50+ points of science, but somehow pulled it out by focusing on civilian. I haven't read the BGG strategy forum but civilian seems really strong.

-Finally, thanks to being able to stay late (because you need it when you're playing this game), got to play a 3p game of Blood Bowl Team Manager. Was Orcs, my least-liked team (playing against Chaos, most-like, and Humans, kinda boring though they won) but I still had a lot of fun. Game is so great 3p. (Honestly think 4p is just too long as much as I love the game.) Really hoping expansions come out for this soon.

My FLGS FINALLY got contacted by CGF about my GtR Black Box shipment (and theirs).

I am in Canada though, so I'm still not expecting my Black Box until September.
