So you're saying my gf will love it? She hardly likes anything deeper than Dominion, and even that not often. I love deep, long games, she likes Cranium. Thought maybe Munchkin was something we both enjoy... But your guys' feedback and if it's bad for just 2p, I'll probablt hold off :p

Anything that both deep-game lovers and non-gamers would enjoy, for 2p? Maybe King Of Tokyo? :x Dominion/Roll through the ages were successful with her.

Well. We played our game of Agricola last night. Fuck that game is awesome. We had 5 people playing it and it took us about 4 hours to play, but a lot of the early rounds had a lot of thinking and figuring out what does what (plus lots of snacking and general bullshitting was happening) our next game certainly won't take as long.

Amazing game though, you can never do anything you want, your basically just trying to survive the whole time. Haha.

It's helps that I won as well. 41 points for me next closest was 30. So I feel alright about it. Heh. We probably did a lot of stuff wrong though, I will take some time and read some rule stuff on BGG.

Next up, Eclipse!

The great thing about agricola is that the cards change the game so much, it's amazing, yet you are still rarely able to set the game un autopilot for the last rounds. Given the fact that there are a bazillion of expansions doesn't help either.

It was a favorite of me and the wife, can't wait for it to come to the iPad.

Out of the few board games I own (staples: Catan, Carcassonne, Arkham Horror, Agricola) I'd rate Agricola as my equal fave with Catan. Building a farm may sound lame but I quite enjoying making new strats and trying to do better than the last time. The increasing speed of harvests is a great mechanic.

Hopefully my free time will open back up for things like Gaf, board games and fun in general.

I had a great game night on Saturday. Opened up with a quick game of Dungeon!, then played the best game of Talisman i've ever played, then we capped it off with Pandemic. Good night of gaming all around.

Is King of Tokyo really good? It doesn't have the greatest score on BGG. I've been looking at it however since our gaming group is 4-6 people (with usually 5-6). However I'm also looking at Tzol'kin which looks great but only goes to 4. I'm at a bit of a crossroads here :(

King of Tokyo is good light gaming. At its heart it's a push-your-luck kill the leader game, with some nice power-up cards to tweak the rules.

Anyone try either the Marvel or DC comic deck building game? Any comments. They both seem to be based off Acension. I like that in DC you actually get a character you play. Marvel's looks to be better produced with a bit more to it rulewise, but it's apparently going to be $60 retail for a DBG....

Thanks for the Glen More impressions. It's on my do to list now, especially because it's cheap.

Finally learned to play Mage Knight over the weekend. Good times, though it's pretty complicated. I usually play a game a few times by myself to learn it well enough to explain it to my group. I may play this one a good ten times first. :p

King of Tokyo is amazingly fun. Our group has played it at least once a meeting since I bought it a couple months ago. The rating on BGG is also pretty high for the type of game it is. It's also ranked 147th which is really good.

There's an updated ruleset for A Few Acres that tries to resolve the issue, but the hardcore fans still aren't happy with the changes.

Honestly the exploit shouldn't stop people playing it casually. You see someone obviously doing it, you slap 'em ;)

This. AFAoS is a great game, and unless you're competing on the AFAoS World Cup circuit or analyzing "professional" play, the game isn't broken.

Getting ready to put together a new CSI order, so if anyone has anything I should check out let me know. Mainly need games that support 2 players, since the wife is getting pretty pregnant and then the baby will need at least a few months before she's ready to join us :)

This is why Spartacus probably isn't going to be in the order, since it's only 3+

Is the Doom Board game any good? Remember hearing it was actually a decent game and it's been OOP for a while now. Reason why is local shop has lot of older games new still on the shelves and upcoming sale.

It's a great light game to start off the night or as a palate cleanser at the end of the evening. 4+ players is best. Easy to explain and easy to play.

Yes not only is it a decent game it is a Descent game (the game system was used for Journeys In The Dark). Anyway it's got a much more survival horror feel that is entirely appropriate for the game it's emulating. Great minis too. Only 5 scenarios in the base game, but easy to create your own. The marines have a tough fucking time but it scales well (each marine is a colour, the monsters are coloured too. You can only use the coloured monsters that match a marine in play). Power cards are fun for the marines and give fun specialisation options. The weapons are suitably themey. Some of the missions have little sub quests for bonus guns. There are secrets. The Invader/Overlord player can play unlimited cards provided the conditions are met (no threat system like Descent 1.0. Amusingly threat was added because Doom was too hard. It's now been removed in Descent 2.0). Anyway I really like it, even with owning Descent.Very different feel even if I don't pull it out so much anymore. Oh and if you can get the expansion, it's supposed to be great. I wish I had :(

Is the game good enough on it's own? It seems like folks really act like the expansion was so great and improves the game so much, or that it fixed things with the original game.

Sorry for jumping in like newb, just one question for those in the know:

Is there any game such as Puerto Rico? My crew is getting exhausted by it, so we're looking for a alternative.

We are seeking for a game that has no dices and with minimised "luck factor", as Puerto Rico.

Also, anything related to economy and such (again, as Puerto Rico) would be a plus.

Thanx in advance!

I really enjoyed my time with Mageknight. Now I have moved to Heroscape as my easy go to game of that kind. Those are great games though.

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.
So... what are some of the best SINGLEPLAYER games out there? I hope that's not too frowned upon... I realized I could play LOTR:LCG alone and it's actually pretty fun, just wondering what else is out there :) It doesn't have to be "singleplayer only", just games that are a lot of fun playing alone. (probably mostly Coop games, but who knows?)

The aforementioned Mage Knight is pretty decent in solo mode. And yeah I think you're right that they'll mostly be co-op games. My three favorites would be Ghost Stories, Elder Sign, and Forbidden Island, in that order. I especially like Ghost Stories, which is easily the most challenging co-op game I've ever played.

Of course, I play all manner of games by myself all the time. Last night I played 5-player Battlestar Galactica by myself to make sure I remembered everything to teach it in the near future. I couldn't believe it when I revealed I was a cylon and threw myself in the brig.

lol. Forbidden Island is... a bit simple. It's fun to play with non-gamers and i've had quite a bit of success with it (if I just stay quiet and try not to "dominate" the play, since there's hardly assigned player roles), but for just myself it'd probably be too simple. Elder Sign & Ghost Stories I'm waiting for an iOS sale hehe. Much better/cheaper. Too bad Ghost Stories is Ipad only, but eh.

I never played it, but Phantom Leader is supposed to a good solo game. If you have an iPad they just released the iOS version of it. The downside is the app costs $15, the upside is it's still a lot cheaper than the cardboard version.

One that I did play was Friday. Friday is a solo deck building game, it's pretty difficult to win but it's simple to play. It also comes in a tiny box so it's easy to travel with.

Played my first game of Agricola last night with my wife and while we played on the 'family' variant, the overwhelming number of choices and the lack of any idea on the strategy was a bit confusing.

That said, I did enjoy and started to 'get it' towards the end. I think I built up my family too slowly (as did she too).

Thunderstone Advance works incredibly well solo.

Agricola vs. Battlestar Galactica for a group that will probably pretty inebriated after about an hour?

I want to throw something new in the mix as we are a new group and have played: Pandemic (w/ expansion), DixIt, Telestration, and RoboRally.

Maybe I should get both? How are the setups on these two?

Yeah it's fine. I don't own the expansion and I've never not had fun with it. People on BGG just get butthurt when a game is hard. Doom is hard, very hard, but I think it's trying to evoke the horror/survival atmosphere of Doom 3 which it does wonderfully.

Either of those won't work well with drunk people, they require too much attention. If you want a game kind of like BSG but with a lot less sobriety needed get the Resistance. Basically all the accusations of BSG but everything else taken out. Works perfectly with drinks.

Telestration is a fun game but a waste of money. You can play the same thing with a couple pieces of paper and a creative group.

Eh, I agree on the Telestrations stuff--but I didn't buy it. =P

Good on with the recommendation, I'll take a look.

Mage Knight actually works very well alone. I have had to play it that way tons of times myself. There are also various ways to do it.

Isn't that just going to get boring after a while since your eventually just going to win, it's just a matter of how long you invest into doing it as you can't lose in Thunderstone.

Nope, there's an actual single player mode in Advance where enemies move forward and eventually off the board, and if enough of them manage to do so by games end you lose.

Space Hulk: Death Angel is a great solo game. Here is the Youtube video series that shows a solo play through. It goes kind of slow because it's explaining everything, but it goes much fast when you know the rules and are playing on your own.

I wasn't the one asking but... I watched the whole thing for some reason (scrubbed a little bit, but still).

This game looks awesome! Is multiplayer played the exact same way but with fewer marines under your control? The only thing I'd be worried about is players getting eliminated quickly, but it looks like a pretty fast game overall so it might not be that big of an issue.

so I played a few acres of snow, its actually pretty good and if there is an imbalance i'm pretty sure it will be beyond me to find it.

its pretty similar to dominion but with an added map component, and more mechanics.

the details specific to the two different sides is neat, but it didn't feel like one side was overpowered.

You could check out the Gears or War boardgame. Has rules for solo play that work pretty well.

A new edition of the game was just announced for January hehe

Yeah, the multiplayer game is the same, only each player takes control of one of the pairs of marines, or 2 pairs, for a small number of players.
