The New Board Game Thread (Newcomer Friendly)

4Players.de One of the German video game websites now also writes some stuff about board games. Even they say the Eclipse expansion is kind of weak for the asking price. So I am not alone with that opinion. ;)

The rise of the ancients expansion? I've bought it already but haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I really don't see how it could be bad. Unless they really just mean its too expensive. But the new tech it adds and the new game mechanics all sound awesome, and then there is the fact that 3 of the 4 new races it adds look like awesome fun.

I dunno if its just a price thing then that's fine, that's there opinion, but reviewing stuff based on price seems like a stupid thing to do with board games in my opinion. Maybe you have 9 friends who all want to play eclipse together, even playing just 1 game with all 9 people would make it worth it to me.

Did the Blood Bowl card game expansion ever come out?

hahahaha, I don't come into the thread for weeks and of course the question I ask is like four posts up.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting Ticket to Ride(I don't own any currently), but I played the Europe edition many times before.
So, I'm considering the Ticket to Ride: Märklin one, is that a good choice? (over the original version, etc)
I haven't heard too much about the Märklin version, is it fun? (seems like the Europe version was more popular?)

I also see a lot of expansions (Asia, Africa, Nordic, etc), any recommendations? Are they compatible to all version of Ticket to Ride?

Thanks

The marklin expansion is okay. My biggest qualm with it is the set up time for the passenger tokens in each city. If someone could suggest a better way to set up/keep track of them I'd be all ears. I would however, recommend the original + the 1910 expansion for bigger cards, as well as the Legendary/Team Asia expansion.

The US game was a good starting point for me. I eventually picked up 1910, India/Switzerland, and Asia/Team Asia. Africa is on the to do list. That's enough variety that I haven't felt the need to pick up any of the other standalone versions. Scenarios:

Non-gamers, other couples: Base game (with big cards from 1910 of course).
1v1 vs Wife: 1910 Mega Game or Switzerland.
More "hardcore" gaming group: 1910 Mega Game, Asia, Team Asia, India. Africa will join this list too.

Gencon hotel and badges bought!

Btw, fuck Indy's ridicilous hotel tax rate of 17%

One day I will make it out to this...but most of the stories are here are about how dreadfully packed it is and I'm more of an open-gaming guy myself, so maybe not. I'm sure it would be fun though in its own way.

<3 the Asia map so much. Great bang for your buck with the Team variant and the solid Legendary side.

It's only bad if your trying to get into specific game demos for something that is super hot or in a booth selling exclusive stuff. Tons of stuff to do and you can often just walk up to many places and just try out a new game no problem.

So, I watched ShutUp&SitDowns review of Memoir '44. Whats BoardGAFs opinion of it? It seems pretty fun.

I think most of BG GAF is pretty meh on it, but I like it a lot if you are looking for a very light wargame that's pretty awesome on theme and components. It's not a real wargame, but if you are cool with reenacting many battles by putting some nice tanks and soldiers on the board, and chucking lots of dice it's quite good.

It is a fantastic game, classic system that is just simple fast paced fun. If your looking for something overly strategic or realistic wargame, obviously look elsewhere. It is one of the better produced versions of the Command and Colors wargame series thanks to the great packaging of DoW.

If you want a more in depth wargame that is not overly complex, Conflict of Heroes is real good choice too.

I love the randomness of M44, it makes up for some amazing battles. Sure, one player always has the advantage but you never know for sure who is going to win. It makes the game a lot more tactical and makes every single card and roll count.

In some other games you already know you are going to win no matter what but you still have to keep playing for another 20 minutes. Boring.

TOI is great, I just get down on it due to FFG usual component over kill which makes taking it out and take down a chore.

Yeah, some times that can be a pain. I have it pretty well organized with plano boxes so it can go pretty quick. The game itself is beautiful imo, I wish I could play it more.

Even at stuff historical wargaming cons, the Command and Colors system by Borg is always big. Even with it's casual appeal and design, the game system often plays out realistically in it's recreation of the battles compared to many of the more advanced and detailed wargames out there. Your going to have random aspects with how it's designed, but all wargames have this aspect.

As one of my first forays back into tabletop gaming, I'm personally really enjoying M44, and it's one of the few my wife will actually play with me. Did have the unintended effect of making me want to play every other WW2 wargame out there. (Looking at you, Tide of Iron and Axis and Allies Europe and Pacific...)

Speaking of which, I think I'm supposed to be defending Point du Hoc this evening.

Does the GoT board game stand on its own as a strategy game or is it just a draw for fans of the series? My sister's boyfriend has gotten me into board gaming with Knizia's LOTR. He's into more strategic games so I thought I might pick this up so we could play something different. I'm a big ASOIAF fan so it jumped out at me. Thoughts?

It's good, the whole theme thing really at times feels pasted on personally as it could just be generic fantasy like setting for what anyone cares. Only issue with the game is that to really play it well, you need 5-6 players as it doesn't work so well with fewer players than recommended.

Oh yes, GOT is awesome. You really need a full house though, 4-5 people at least, 6 if you have a copy that plays that many (I forget if the second edition has Dorne). The game is more about the meta game of alliances and backstabbing, the board is just for keeping track :)

If it is just 2 of you, War of the Ring is a really thematic wargame (LOTR). Lots of cool bits, good strategy, and tons of dice chucking :)

I played Lords of Vegas last night. First time in a while that I got that game out to the table, and that game is still great. We had a very close game and my wife ended up winning due to some good reorg rolls on strip casinos and the game over card showing up right after her turn.

Thinking about it last night, I think this would make a good Monopoly replacement. If you've got friends or family who drags out Monopoly during get togethers, have them play this instead. There is the aspect of owning property, trying to group like colors together to earn more cash and points, die rolling (chucking fistfuls of dice is so satisfying), and negotiation. Best part it doesn't take forever, we played a three player game in roughly an hour.

Argh, GenCon hotel rooms went crazy fast this year. There's already like nothing available downtown and registration opened yesterday at noon.

This is really good:

http://thegamedesignroundtable.com/2013/01/30/episode-12/

By: Dirk Knemeyer & Jon Shafer

Description: Jon and Dirk are joined by designer David Heron to discuss his work on the Legend of the Five Rings CCG (Collectible Card Game). Along the way, they examine the business side of building a CCG. The discussion then shifts to deckbuilding and drafting games, with a particular focus on Dominion and 7 Wonders and the design flaws that prevent Dirk and David from enjoying them. At the end of the episode Jon teases a big announcement that will be made next week.

Site exploded several times yesterday around noon with folks registering. If you sign up now for for waiting list you should get a room no problem though.

Surprised it sold so fast too since they put a limit on amount of rooms a person could get, folks used to jump on and just pick up a bunch of rooms for group of friends.

Yeah, we're on the waitlist. Just didn't expected it to be so crazy since last year we were able to get a room a few blocks away in mid-March. Hopefully something opens up. Having to drive in from some airport hotel each day would put a large damper on the con experience.

They usually sell out first day, but it's often hotels holding back and slowly will add more blocks of rooms after seeing how things go. Theres also always lots of cancellations.

AGOT is like Battlestar Galactica in that it's great as a board game, but gets even better if you're into the theme. Expect low luck but high unpredictability, lots of backstabbing and deal-making, and the common FFG design style--lots of varied mechanics that are generally logical, flavourful, and intuitive. The disadvantages are that you'll need at least four players to have fun with it, and that it can take a very long time depending on how much diplomacy your group engages in. Provided you can deal with these issues, I definitely recommend it.

Looks like Hegemonic changed around their stretch goals.

Now the fancy plastic bits are at 70k instead of 80k. I really hope it makes it to that in the last 5 days. haha.

These could be a lot cooler than the basic cube, triangles and circles currently included. Plus velvet bags for the races are next at 60k, its something I wish I had for Eclipse, so I would like to get it here, haha.

Go pledge!

Ah, haven't thought of getting the 1910 expansion before (since I thought it was somewhat redundant), and Marklin (with the bigger cards, and passengers) seems to offer newer/more interesting mechanics to the game.

But, think I'll go with Original/1910 + Asia now, thanks guys.

Excellent choice! Nice thing is that with Team Asia you can player 6p Ticket to Ride no problem (it actually might be my favorite way to play all of TTR).
