The new iPad |OT|

I think only Apple can pull of changing a naming decision to where it used to be "Apple iPod"

we got a number of iPods but they were never called iPod 1, 2 or 3

If you notice on the Apple page, Its called. Apple iPad (3rd Generation)

I think they will use the 'generation' monicker from now on

This is a big reason why I think iPad dropped the number. In all honesty while there is a lot they technical can do (haptic, drastically new form factor, etc) but there really isn't much that you can reasonably expect going forward.

I expect iPad 4 to have:
- Quad-Core A6 CPU
- Likely another boost to the camera (8 MP this time?)
- Slightly thinner casing maybe, likely back to iPad 2 level or maybe a bit less than that. But nothing hugely noticeable.
- Possibly more RAM but not something I'll really expect

And...that is about it. If they were keeping the naming conventions it would be more of an S sort of revision. I mean there is no need to mess with anything huge like the form factor or screen. They got that perfected for the next few years.

Quad core makes no sense on the iPad.

iOS is not a multitasking OS... Expect dual cores. Next year they will update both the CPU ang GPU (to ARM A15 and PowerVR 6) which should translate to heavy performance improvements.

weird request: can someone with a shipped order check their bank account and see if your transaction is still posted please?

i have an order for a new ipad thats already shipped. i looked at my bank account(TD Bank) this evening and the amount for the ipad has been put back in my account. i mean the entire transaction is missing. it was definitely there yesterday and apple got paid....i wonder whats going on??

You don't need to multitask to take great advantage of multiple cores. Grand Central Dispatch and blocks are a fucking one-two punch for CPU-heavy and network-intensive applications.

:( worst part is its the weekend so the banks cant do shit. hopefully the transaction reappears on monday. i do not want my order canceled(even tho it already shipped).

Mine hasn't shipped, but I got a call from MasterCard the day after I purchased it to confirm the purchase. My dad has had things he bought online with his Visa not ship because Visa thought it was fraud and just cancelled the order, no phone call or anything, so hopefully that isn't the case for you.

Mine hasn't shipped yet, but I use TD Bank and they do that all the time with my online comic book orders and amazon sometimes. That's not abnormal at all. The money will be removed again and the charge will show up again, but not under pending charges. It was a hold on your funds to make sure you had enough credit/funds on your card/debit card. I wouldn't expect to see it change back till next week, esp since its the weekend and they have shipped them early. Trust me, don't worry on this one.

Loser slave of the system :(
I'm assuming the product name opens more room for variations of the iPad. Possibly an 8" iPad Air? Sounds silly but stranger things have happened.

Same here for me with a local credit union. Don't sweat it.

Sorry for the possibly dumb question.

If I download iPhoto on my iPhone will I get it for free on my iPad as the same version I would get if i bought it on my iPad?

Terribly confusing and hopefully not too poorly written of a question...

Alllso question #2

What do you guys think is the best thing for me to do given this situation. I have my iPad 3rd gen ordered. 16 GB WiFi; but I would like to switch it to a 32GB WiFi without giving up the fact that I am *pretty much* confirmed to be receiving it on day one. I went into the Apple store today to ask if I brought in my iPad when I received it on the 16th if I could switch it for a 32GB but they said the online and retail stores are completely separate.

Any ideas?

Requires a constant internet connection to be seamless, which many iPads don't have.

Of course they haven't actually given a reason, that's just my assumption.

That's what I think, the last thing Apple wants is Siri constantly telling the user "sorry I can't complete that right now" when the person is outside of wifi range. Siri only makes sense when the device is always connected to the internet. So basically iPhone and Apple TV.

Well they could always reduce input lag

That would be awesome to have on the iPad. If Microsoft's tablets offer that kind of responsiveness, it's a huge edge.

That's not a viable excuse. Dictation requires the same constant connection (lose connection and the dictation button isnt selectable).

Pretty sure that's simulated using a projector and IR sensor or something, and I'm also pretty sure the article also said it was not something that Microsoft would be implementing (again, because its a concept and not actual tablet tech).

From the verge article:

Although the demo from the Redmond team isn't actually running on a touchscreen display — input reaction is projected onto the surface from above — the basic idea of such instant responsiveness leaves us in no doubt that Microsoft's got the right idea.

Yes, iPhoto is a universal app meaning that one download contains both iPhone and iPad versions. So you only have to pay once.

for anyone like me who hasnt gotten any of the previous iPads at all yet, now is a great time to jump in and purchase this new iPad...if you own the iPad 1 or 2 tho, well, if you can sell it off and buy this one then it may be worth it. Not much of a difference between this new iPad and iPad 2 to justify an upgrade for most people though.

I want to get this new iPad, but I have the iPhone 4S and feel that it can pretty much do at least 70% of what the iPad can do, since its in the same iOS ecosystem. With the iPad you are just getting a bigger screen and the ability to run a few apps that are exclusive to it. Heck, the iPhone 4S has an 8MP camera and you would think that Apple would of given the new iPad the same, but its only 5MP. the new iPad doesnt even have Siri, which I honestly dont use much on my iPhone, but still...not to mention paying another bill monthly for data plans if you are buying the iPad with LTE.

The iPad is a computer, the iPhone is phone.

I do almost nothing the same as I do on iPhone as I do on iPad. You speak like someone hwo clearly doesn't have an iPad. Don't let the fact they share the same OS fool you.

Agree with this sentiment. The primary job of my 4S is texting usually. It's capable of much more, but it's generally relegated to portable/on the go use. iPad is my main computing device.

I can't understand the reasoning of those who deem the retina display an insufficient reason to upgrade. Do you guys not remember 480x320 iPhones? It's THE reason to upgrade IMO and the biggest thing to happen to the iPad since its release.

Dictation: No internet = a button disappears

Siri: No internet = annoying "sorry but I can't help you right now"

What's better from a user experience POV? There will never be Siri on iPad IMO.

Clearly having the option to use the service with easily predictable limitations is a better experience than never being able to use it.

I think Siri is delayed for 2 reasons:

1) They still haven't provided enough Siri servers. Siri will often get your voice input correct (Voice dictation/nuance servers work) , but still say "Sorry, too busy" (Siri servers busy). They still had to put disclaimers on their Japanese language rollout, presumably because they were unsure of the load hit. When 5 million iPads go online on March 16, it would be a bad experience if the servers couldn't handle the load.

2) There needs to be a lot of additions to the iOS version for iPad--apps/widgets like clock, weather, stocks. Might as well save it for iOS 6 along with the (possible) addition of notification center/siri widgets.

I'm hoping Siri gets added in an iOS update, and dictation is just to wet the appetite and get iPad users used to talking to their devices.

I kind of want and kind of don't want a smart cover. It's slick as fuck, but I'd only really go for the leather ones (either red or black) and they aren't cheap (even the used ones on Amazon go higher than I would pay, and the cheap eBay offers seem shady to me). They also wouldn't do much for me in terms of functionality; I have a sleeve that I'm gonna put my iPad in regardless of whether I have a smart cover or not, especially when I'm taking it to class or work.

I bought my mother a smart cover for her iPad last year and it seems to leave outlines on the iPad screen itself (the contours along the creases in the cover), and that would piss me off. Obviously clean-able, but still.

Mostly cons, but goddamn those leather covers are slick. DAMN IT.

there's about a 0% chance you see those crease lines when the device's screen is on.

I can't help but feel your post is incredibly redundant. You don't have an ipad either and you're claiming it's just a bigger iphone?

I always thought these were slick if you like the wood look:

I see them depending on the the colors displayed.

intresting. because I never really see finger prints and assume it'd be about the same.

I'd be in if Apple didn't change the shape of the iPad slightly almost every year. but $250 for a case that might not be forward-compatible is...not going to happen. ever.

But...it's fucking gorgeous. Shit, I still might. 12-week delivery makes the chub go down, however.

Anyone know how iCloud works, particularly with photos? If upload pics to the iCloud from my iPad 1 and then transfer them to my new iPad, then delete them from the iCloud, does Apple keep copies or even a record of filenames? I filled my 64GB iPad 1 with picture porn and haven't allowed it to sync with the iCloud yet for fear that Apple employees or federal authorities might see them. But I want to be able to move them to my new iPad.

Never realized it was $250 until you pointed it out. I never bothered to click the "buy now" button.

If that's the case, they shouldn't have Siri on phones either. I go through periods of my commute where I can't get internet service every day.

I know you're being obtuse on purpose, but with phones you have some form of internet connection 99% of the time. With tablets, you don't...they added dictation, but really, it's a throwaway feature that few of us are going to use.

If you got the 4G capable iPad, then you have connection on your iPad just as often as smartphones do.
