It should be the Las Vegas Venom with some sort of snake eyes dice logo..

Or maybe snake on front dice on the shoulders..

Black Knights is clunky as fuck.. But I've read that the Vegas owner is pretty set on it.
The owner literally said "go army beat navy" during the press conference to announce the team.

The NHL’s expansion team in Las Vegas is still reviewing its options when it comes to a team name.

According to Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, team owner Bill Foley’s choices “are narrowed to four from an original 18 names the team submitted to the NHL for approval.”

“We’re making progress,” Foley told Carp on Friday. “We’re in a pretty good position now and we’re meeting next week with the NHL and adidas to look at logos and designs. We’ll have a little more clarity in the next 30 days.”

Many have wondered if the “Las Vegas Knights” would be the big winner, considering Foley’s position as chairman of Black Knight Financial Services, Inc.

According to Carp, it's still a contender — but there's just one roadblock, and it's located in Southwestern Ontario.

“The London Knights own the name in Canada and to acquire the name from London is not economically feasible,” Foley said. “In the U.S., ‘Knights’ are fine. But we can’t use it in Canada.”

Foley is, of course, referring to the OHL team—and 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup champion club—owned by Dale Hunter.

According to Carp, attempts to reach Hunter were unsuccessful.

The Las Vegas team is expected to make the official announcement in late September or early October—and don't expect them to reveal the top contenders until the big event.

"I know everyone is anxious about the name," said Foley. "But we want to get it right.”

Las Vegas NHL owner Bill Foley has grand visions for the image of his team

He sees a situation where many of the 42 million yearly visitors to the city leave town in a jersey with his organization’s colors and crest.

“We want the name to fit our goals and what we’re trying to accomplish and I’m really confident that we’re going to hit it and do really well,” Foley said in a recent phone interview with Puck Daddy. “I want every person from China who comes to Las Vegas to take a jersey and bring it back to Shanghai or Beijing or Hong Kong. I want everyone from Japan that comes in or from Eastern or Western Europe, I want them all to buy jerseys. We’re really trying to develop a team that has an international aspect to it.”

Before Foley’s idea can be realized he needs to officially pick a name. So far this has involved several steps, many meetings and a few legal issues. Foley says he thinks he’s finally settled on a name, but still has a few more hurdles to clear. The name, he said, will probably not be Nighthawks though that remains an option as a backup. Earlier in the summer it was reported Nighthawks could be the front-runner for the Las Vegas team name.

On Thursday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the name could be Desert Knights.

Foley said that he was initially partial to Black Knights based on his military heritage as a West Point graduate. But Foley said he got “pushback” from the army and immediately moved on. Also, Foley noted that Black Knights wasn’t exactly the first choice of the team’s prospective fans.

“I do listen to what the fans are saying. Black Knights is not a popular name generally speaking amongst the fans,” Foley said. “I think they would have loved it because I had a real plan in place about what the Black Knight would be and how we would promote that logo and that name and that culture. But I believe we’ll do the same thing with the names we’re coming down to.”

When the NHL awarded Las Vegas a team, commissioner Gary Bettman noted that this expansion process would be covered differently than past teams thanks in part to the growth of the internet and social media.

Bettman’s words have proved prophetic in regards to the organization’s quest to find a name. From Silver Knights to Red Hawks, Desert Hawks and Nighthawks several different possibilities have been reported.

The London Knights of the OHL released a statement on Aug. 11 saying they “have not thus far been contacted by the Las Vegas franchise” in regards to the usage of the “Knights” name.

The domain names to lasvegasdesertknights.com, vegasdesertknights.com and desertknightshockey.com were privately registered to Moniker Privacy Services last week, according to Justin Emerson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Moniker Privacy Services is the same company that owns the domain to NHL.com.

Foley reportedly said via text message that he had no comment regarding an update to the name-selection process. And there is no indication that Moniker Privacy Services is connected to Foley or the NHL. But Foley initially wanted to call the team the “Black Knights” after his alma mater (the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.) or simply the “Knights” before running into issues.

It wouldn’t be surprising if “Desert Knights” really is the direction he’s leaning.

Black Knights playing in the same division as the black Kings would be...something.

I like Blackjacks or Aces. Playing in the arena right on the strip could be really huge for them, with all that foot traffic. You will probably get people treating games the same way they do Las Vegas shows, and buying tickets just to have something to do that night.

Huh, I only heard about this because the thread got bumped. I always found it funny because there's a Toronto radio guy who used to live in Vegas and kept saying that a team in Las Vegas would be a bad idea because of the economics. I guess we'll see if it's another Phoenix.

Las Vegas hockey fans can stop suggesting names for the valley’s NHL expansion team. Owner Bill Foley has decided on a name.

But fans will have to wait until mid- to late October to find out the full name.

Everything is a go after months of deliberation, going through legal hoops to secure the trademarks, copyrights and domain names, and the team will be called the Silver Knights, Desert Knights or Golden Knights.

“The name is definitely set,” Foley said Monday from California. “But I can’t tell you exactly what it is. That’s a secret.”

Foley remains committed to having a major announcement party at T-Mobile Arena. But with so few open dates at the building next month, his options are limited, so he has chosen to wait.

He said the color scheme is also set and the final logos were being made by adidas, which has worked with the team and the NHL for the past few months on the design and colors.

The plan is for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to attend the major announcement, schedule permitting.

Foley said while the wait has cost the team millions of dollars in sales, he thinks it can make up a good percentage of it once the nickname is announced and that shirts, hats and, most important, jerseys become available.

“The jerseys are going to look great,” he said. “Everyone’s going to want one.”

The team will have its own store at T-Mobile Arena, and the tentative plan is to have merchandise available for sale the day of the announcement of the nickname.

From the beginning of his pursuit of an NHL team, Foley was partial to a team name that included Knights. A West Point graduate, he originally envisioned calling his team the Black Knights. But he realized there would be legal issues, and there was pushback from the U.S. Military Academy and from fans who simply hated the name.

Foley did some legal maneuvering, but by adding a prefix to Knights, he secured something close to what he wanted. He also had to do some subterfuge to throw would-be poachers off the scent.

But he managed to keep his team in the news, and he won’t apologize for that.

“We’ve gotten all this publicity, and we’ve stayed in the news,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier.”

They won't play for another year and haven't even announced a team name yet, but the new NHL franchise in Las Vegas has already reached the limit on season ticket deposits for its inaugural campaign in 2017-18.

The team announced Monday that it had reached the cap on deposits for the maximum 16,000 season tickets for their first season. Fans that didn't get their deposits in before this will be able to put money down for a spot on the waiting list.

The brand new T-Mobile Arena, located just off the Las Vegas Strip near New York, New York, is expected to have a capacity of 17,500 for hockey.
To have this many deposits collected is a huge victory for the expansion team before they ever step foot on the ice. It also hopes quell skepticism amid the scrutiny this team will face simply because it is the first major professional franchise in Las Vegas.

This has been a process 18 months in the making, as then-prospective owner Bill Foley had asked the NHL for permission to seek down-payments on season tickets. At that point, the team didn't have any assurances that they would be accepted into the NHL.

Kind of like the Brooklyn Nets, they could name the team after a hockey play or hockey equipment...

How many of those were bought by casinos to give out to high rollers? I mean, in the grand scheme of things that doesn't matter that much, but still.

His obsession with "Knights" is really weird. We get it, army. Whatever. Look forward to the butt hurt when they build a rivalry with the Kings, might as well name the Queens to save time.

What the fuck, its a name for a stupid hockey team, not a economic analysis report of the country. Why is it taking so long?

Just name the stupid thing and get on with it.

I like the helmet logo, I think they should drop 'golden' though and just be the Knights, no one down there knows about the London ones anyway.

Should've been just Knights and dropped the Golden

The logo is nice

The name looks odd without the "Las" part

Cool to see my university get its own NHL team.

I seriously can't believe they moved to Vegas and the best they came up with is the name UCF doesn't even use anymore.

Las Vegas GAF are welcome to join NHLGAF in Off Topic community. I love the logo and I can't wait for expansion.

No one is going to say Golden Knights. They will be known as the 'Knights everywhere almost immediately.

And why not just Knights anyway? There must be a trademark issue.

edit

I believe there are lawsuit concerns. There is a team called London Knights who weren't too happy with them even considering the name, they own the rights in Canada, so they can't call the team Knights in Canada.

How does adding Golden help?

Hey I'm going to sell a new beverage called Golden Coke. No trademark issues there!

There is an Ontario Hockey League team called the London Knights. That's probably why they are called the Golden Knights and not Knights
