The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I'm building my Game Cube collection up. In a few days, I'll have a copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends arriving.

I ran into a slight problem, where I bought a copy of Luigi's Mansion off of a friend. He gave me the game, but the case is for Double Dash. So now I should probably get a case and print out a high quality scan of the cover art. Now I need a double dash disc, too. I'll have to check glyde for that.

I also need a manual for my copy of Super Mario Strikers.

I was going through my cupboards today and found a bunch of gamecube game manuals. Seems quite a few of the games I sold back in the day I'd kept the manuals for. If I have any doubles I'll let you guys know incase anyone needs them.

A comparison at 480p would probably make the difference more noticeable. But even in those you can tell the Gamecube has better color and is slightly more clear. Look at Captain Falcon's arm/hand, the difference there is pretty obvious to me.

That's what I noticed as well, the shots are very similar, but pretty consistently the GameCube has what seems like a brighter colour to it.

This thread is giving me the motivation to start up a Gamecube collection again. I got one pretty close to launch and managed to build up a pretty decent library, but didn't bring it with me when I left for college and my younger brother sold it all. All I have right now is Wind Waker (my all time favorite game!) and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

A quick glance at ebay shows most of the games I'd be re-buying really aren't too terribly priced, so maybe next paycheck I'll jump start this.

I decided to make a list of the games I used to have to give me a point to start from. It made me sad that I got rid of them all though. Plus looking at it now, I think there's a lot of games in this list definitely not worth buying again, although I still may purely for the collection. Needless to say, I bought quite a few crappy games back in the day.

Games in bold are the one's I've managed to reacquire so far.

Before I bought my GC I contemplated buying a US version. I live in the UK, where there was no option for 480p. The problem was that I would have to import all of my games and I wouldn't able to take my memory card to any of my friends house and wouldn't be able to share any data. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Opted for the UK version of it all.

Just wish they had allowed the UK GC to have a cable capable of playing in 480p. Because none of our TVs had the right sockets or capability.

I think the component cable still suipports 480p, but PAL games are programmed not to support it. If you get a free loader or whatever and import games, you can still play in 480p (correct me if I'm wrong!)

I have around 40 or so of the best games for it, the most I have ever bought. Unfortunately I have never played most of them. Never had the time. Most time was spent on Zelda TP, Mario Kart, and Donkey Konga, the Donkey Kong platformer.

Nabbed F-Zero GX and Wave Race for $2 each and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for $1 from goodwill, all came intact with box and manuals. F-Zero even came with what I believe is an official memory card.

Good god I suck at F-Zero though.

Yeah, I picked up F-Zero GX the other day and it's kicking my ass on the easy level. Getting used to the controls.

A big part of GX is also experimenting with different characters/vehicles. Once you find one that works for you it makes a huge difference. That's one reason I suck at the story mode compared to the grand prix and such, I'm just not as good with the Blue Falcon as I am with some of the other vehicles.

My collection so far:

Animal Crossing
007 Nightfire
Baldurs Gate
Baten Kaitos
Baten Kaitos Origins

All CIB. Still a bunch I want to get.

I'll take some 480p GC vs. Wii shots in a bit... hopefully today sometime. I have literally nothing to do, so uh... yeah.
I'm interested to see if there's any more of a pronounced difference compared to my 480i shots.

I don't think there will, since being interlaced will be noticable in motion, but with relatively motionless stuff I tried to focus on in screens it should be essentially the same.

Even so, still interested to see.

It's so good, either through a Wii or GameCube, GC games through component is a revelation after being used to composite video!

It's weird because I remember comparing the two (Gamecube composite and Wii component) when I first got a component cable for the Wii, and it really wasn't too different as I remember. I was a bit disappointed how it didn't change much I think. But this.. wow!

Although, the composite cable had been chewed at by a mouse in the barn, so maybe that is degrading the composite picture for more effect, but maybe not. I put some tape around it...

It's kinda weird, honestly, because the shots of the GC you posted looked incredibly blurry. I was just playing F-Zero GX last week, and it looked far sharper than that... but yeah, we'll see.

Took some crappy, perhaps less-than-convincing iphone pictures of the Wii and GC via component.

GameCube on the left, Wii on the right

F-Zero GX running at 480p:

Killer7 running at 480i:

What the shots don't communicate particularly well is the difference in color. The GC looks quite a bit better, particularly looking at it in person rather than through some iffy cell phone pictures. I should probably take some more Killer7 shots. While the GC and Wii were actually pretty close in F-Zero GX, the difference was more pronounced in Killer7... as can be seen pretty clearly in the last shot.

So, if nothing else, I guess it calls into question the previous comparison shots between the system that showed a massive difference. It's definitely there, and probably more pronounced on bigger TVs, but at least in these shots, it doesn't look to be night and day.

Maybe I'll take some better shots after a few more drinks.

I took some quick iPhone shots of my games collection. Also have four Wavebirds, bunch of memory cards, Game Boy Player, and some wired controllers too, including a Spice colored one.

My collection has been played hard by my boys and myself, too. We played so much F-Zero GX, I bought a second one because the first got ratty!

Baten Kaitos is an outstanding two games I would like to add. Gotcha Force, Custom Robo, 1080 Avalanche, Mario Party 6 (dunno why we never got that one) and a handful of others. Lost Kingdom and its sequel maybe.

Surprised I haven't been seeing this in most of the collection pics. It's my most "prized" (relatively uncommon lol) GC game amongst the Resident Evils.

It could be to do with my capture card, it's probably not as good at upscaling to larger sizes compared to an HDTV, but your shots definitely demonstrate the difference in colour better than mine.

It was pricey for a little while before it got reprinted (this was back in like... 2004 or something?), but like a lot of games that got reprints, the price is going back up.

I just picked mine up for $50 recently, despite it coming down from a $150 used price tag I was seeing used everywhere.

Been replaying my GC games, and I remember why the GC is tied imo for best console ever.

Nintendo really needs this stuff on the VC.

Mario Party 4 imo is the best Party game of all time
SMS best 3D mario
Super Mario Baseball is really fun
First pikmin
Sonic on Nintendo for first time
Mario Kart Double Dash

I really hope that they allow the games to run with the full cpu and gpu benefits of the wii u, so that the games run at a smoother clockrate.

If anyone has a hacked wii, play sonic the fighters on Sonic Gems Collection on the GC and then through devolution, there is major difference if you pay attention. It feels much more responsive and fluid.

I would really love both wii and GC games on the e shop.

Is the S-video supposed to offer better picture quality than regular composite cables? My Gamecube still looks kinda crappy on my HDTV (a 22" Toshiba 22AV500U) using an S-video set I got for $10. :/

Yes but just a little. Component with progressive scan enabled is where you will really notice the bump.

Sweet collection! Custom Robo was a lot of fun.

Bleh I don't feel like coughing up over $100 for component cables, so I guess I'll continue playing Twilight Princess as-is.
Or not. I'm not sure how I feel about this game.

Alright, I think this is the perfect place to pose this question. I need help with a dilemma:

Should I get rid of my Gamecube and keep the Wii for my GC library, or hang on to both?

I'm trying to thin out most of my gaming collection (watch the Buy Sell Trade soon!), because I have too much stuff (which I never play anyhow) and it's gotten to be quite ridiculous and crowded. Still, I find it hard to let go of a lot of Gamecube games, as I find a lot of the games in my GC collection to be pretty charming (where's the love for Cubivore, you guys? I haven't seen it in any of your collections).

Most charming of all is the system itself- small, cubic, has a neat GBA attachment, is super durable and reliable. I even have the component cable, which I think I must have ordered the last one of before Nintendo took them off their site for good.

However, the Wii is also small and space-conscious, looks pretty cool, plays all my Gamecube games, along with my Wii games (which I'm also keeping most of), has a bunch of nice emulation capabilities, and seems semi-reliable.

The Wii seems like a better system to keep around, but...it's honestly hard to say goodbye to that Cube.... What say you, Gamecube-GAF?

I used to have a pretty hefty collection, but I had to sell it all off, so I've started over. Currently I have:

Cubivore (snagged for $8 at a pawn shop)
NHL Hitz 20-03
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2
F-Zero GX
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart Double Dash

...and that's all. I miss my games :(

I'd say keep it. The cash you sell it for won't be enough to fill the hole it leaves in your heart, and you can bet your butt that if you regret it, by the time you want to buy one again they'll be costing a lot more.

That plus... it's such a cute little console. It won't take up much space to keep it around :P

I've regretted and eventually reaquired almost every video game I've ever sold.

I think everyone goes through the trimming the fat phase. You've been warned.

:<

I totally understand the urge to have our videogame collections in our lives. I pretty much can't bear to let go of any of my beloved PS1 games (high degree of nostalgia there). Same goes for a small faction of my PS2 and Dreamcast games. Gamecube has surprisingly ended up as a stack of 20 or so games that I think are really neat. But with stuff like backwards compatibility and emulation, I kind of feel like the consoles themselves are not as important anymore.

Do you have a GBA player? If not you should get one, then you have an excuse to keep your GC.

I'm with you about the collection culling, I've done it a few times. Gamecube and Dreamcast are the only older systems I bothered to keep in the end, and I'm glad I did. Except the Dreamcast stopped working a few months ago and I had to turf it.

I find it so hard to find gamecube games where I am. Local thrift shops like Goodwill never have any, at the most they'll have a few PS2 games lying around. Even pawn shops have barely any.

Even gaming stores normally don't have any bar 1 franchise I've found, which can stock normally between 10-20 of them. This makes hunting for games pretty limiting. I've tried visiting markets (flea markets) and have never seen a single gamecube game for sale. I almost never see any video games for sale. Never seen a gamecube game at a garage sale either, no matter how many I check out. Ugh.

So this pretty much means I'm stuck to ebay and online methods. Suppose that's not too bad though.

Yeah, I do have a GBA Player (got it for 99 cents!) and I've used it only a few times, but it does make that Gamecube all the more attractive.

I'm in a similar situation. I very rarely find GC games in pawn shops (though there have been times!) and mainly use eBay. That said, Gumtree has been surprisingly good for the occasional pickup as well.

That's true I actually got the console itself from Gumtree. Also got a 3ds and Pokemon White off gumtree for $100

Truth. My "sell the games" phase came when I was about to leave for college. I wanted beer money. What did I give up for all those Keystone Light Tallboys??? Snatcher complete in box, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and many others...... What a colossal mistake. Never again!!!

Me too, so many games I had that will now cost me an arm and a leg to reacquire. For gamecube my most valuable game was probably killer7 which now runs from about 70-100$ but on n64 I sold a boxed copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day with the manual. Now it sells for around $200 here.

PAL games can get expensive.
