The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Did all copies of them come with the ereader? My wife had a copy of + and e+ and I searched her house last time we were in Japan for old game stuff and didn't find an ereader.

The first game was stand alone, the second e+ game had 2 releases one without the e-reader and a box set version that had the e-reader included. The game that came in this set has a notification on the back that it was part of the set so it's easy to spot if it's split and sold alone.

Oh I have been looking for protectors. Nobody makes them, so (at the moment) I have resorted to "manga bags" :(

That's better than nothing at least they will be partly protected, you share my pain in the lack of protectors if only someone woud think of the people who collect the Japanese games but i guess it's a very small niche. You did an amazing job to track down a full set, they look in pretty good shape too.

Why were there so few games in Japan? Was the GCN not popular there?

It wasn't. I want to say the sales breakdown was somewhere in the ballpark of 50% NA, 25% EU/PAL, 25% Japan.

Not exactly those percents obviously, just somewhere in that general range.

Holy shit, I just found out how rare and valuable the component cables are when I was looking at SNES prices on http://videogames.pricecharting.com/ and clicked on the GCN tab on a whim.

Holy fucking Christ. I picked up my cable in 2006 with my copy of Twilight Princess at a Gamestop for about $5. When the hell did it start getting so damn expensive?

I'm kind of paranoid about breaking or losing it now, lol. Could someone re-upload that video linked to in the OP that shows that the cable is really durable or something? I need to see it to calm my nerves, lol.

Man...I've only in the past couple of days realized that some of my old game stuff I have is worth a lot of money now. I almost shat my pants when I found out that my copy of Ducktales 2 I got for Christmas when I was four (that game is way too fucking hard for a preschooler, haha) goes for almost $200 on ebay, and now this...I'm so glad I convinced my parents to never sell any of my old game stuff!

...I guess I kind of need to start a serious Gamecube collection now, since I already have the most expensive part of it out of the way, right?

Seems a bit out of date on that site, ebay bids are going for $300+ for GC cables.

I guess I'll hug mine closer lol

So the price of GC cables has now doubled from last year's (already high) price of $150? wtf?

Nah, people might ask for that much but few actually sell. Looks like the ones that actually sold go for closer to $200 or a bit less unless they are new or include the box.

They were $150 *with box* last year. They have shot up.

They weren't that low, prices haven't gone up that much since 2013. They were around $150 for the cable only (that's when I got mine) and now are around $180-$210 depending on luck/timing.

Lot slower compared to 2010-2012 where they doubled in price in a year and a half or so.

I remember humming and hawing over them for $50. Still blows my mind.

I know the GCN outpurs a digital signal from that port. The cable actually converts it to analog (component) video.

I wonder if someone can use the digital out port to work with a homebrew cable and do straight DVI or HDMI for digital video quality.

There's this... DVI output via an FPGA. Not sure if anyone's made an actual cable out of this stuff yet.

I think even a decent mass production run (if they can work out the unique jack design) would still cost quite a bit of money. Like more than buying an old Wii and component cables for that.

Yeah but there are other games going for over $100 and plenty games over $80, so it's not cheap to collect for the GC.

First bid ending in 5 hours, 6 bids @ $305.00 (not in box)
Second bid ending in 11 hours, 5 bids @ $280.00 (not in box)
Third relevant bid ending in 27 hours, 1 bid @ $250.00 (not in box)

It is amusing and horrifying that Nintendo's failure of the GC coupled with the GC high quality games and such has resulted in this heavy hitting collector's market. I got out of the game a few months ago but this thread reminded me I still have my component cables so I thought I'd do a quick check.

Them cables are just too much for me even if I really want them. Just hope that someone else can start making them to drive down the price.

Jesus. I still have mine and I intend to use them when I eventually pick up another GameCube. But man, am I tempted to sell.

That's pretty sudden.

Just going back 2-3 weeks they are around $200 or less, with the higher ones being new or including the box (or other stuff).

I believe I now have all the games released in Japan (not all variants, but that wasn't my goal either), 279 in total. Sorry for the grainy pictures.

Oh damn. That's an awesome collection, dude!

man... almost makes me want to sell mine, getting crazy with these things.

I think I got my cables right around Metroid Prime 2: Echoes release, or a little after its release. Called Nintendo for em. Never run into another pair again.

A public service announcement on Gamecube Component Cables:

You can make your own if you find a cheap / damaged D-Terminal Cable from Japan. I bought a set for something like $70 (or was it less?) and re-terminated them in Component.

The only really important piece that must remain undamaged is this:

The wires inside are even color-coded.

This is good advice, but aren't D-Terminal cable pricey now as well?

They're more expensive than they should be, but here's one on Yahoo Auctions Japan with a Buyout Price of $120.

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e159476949

New in a damaged box is $150:

http://page16.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u75525636

The search term in Japanese is: D端子 ゲームキューブ

Another sidenote about the D-Terminal cable: If you've got an XRGB Mini, this thing actually plugs directly into it. The Component connection on the XRGB Mini is D-Terminal only. I've got a switchbox of component things (PS2, Gamecube, OG Xbox) that I've got connected to this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410327-REG/Canon_0976B001_D_Terminal_to_Component_Video.html

That then connects to the D-Terminal jack on the XRGB Mini. Works flawlessly.

I just won Kirby Air Ride, I didn't notice at first, but its actually a Canadian version, is the only difference the text on the box plus maybe a French option in the game?

The prices seems to have come down for it on eBay a bit, I remember it being higher awhile back.

I'm playing Metroid Prime right now. I set the game to hard difficulty because... I don know why. Them Fission Metroids are legit fuckers!

Hah. The first time on hard mode I got stuck on the hive mini boss. Those wasps were killer.

I died once there, which surprised the heck out of me. lol

Meta Ridley is a giant sponge for damage too. A charged plasma beam is a mosquito bite to him in his second phase. Yeah, I don't think I'll be touching hard mode on Echoes... I can't stand damage sponge enemies.

I think i remember reading something a couple years back that Nintendo re-issued some of those Gamecube controllers, i think they came in white or something... Any truth to that or did i misread something? I am looking to grab a new controller and original Cube controllers, the standard ones from back then are still somewhat pricey hmm...

They put out new ones when Wii launched. And then they made a lot of white ones with a longer cord in Japan that people have been buying up until the Wii U ones for Smash came out.

Yeah, both the white controllers and the Smash ones seem pretty widely available. They are the same thing apart from the color of the controller and the Smash logo instead of a Gamecube one. Can easily get either for $25-$30.

I don't think you will find the white ones in stores. May find some Smash ones. Easy to get them online though, Amazon has the Smash ones for $25 right now.

Weren't the triggers downgraded on the newer ones? I know I at least heard something got changed/downgraded later on.

Not sure if that's the case with the Smash version too though.

Weak yen means importing the brand new Smash GCN controllers from Japan is cheaper than buying good condition used original controllers, lmao. I recommend going that route.

They are different, it's not too significant though. Smash controller is the same as the white controller, looks like they used the same manufacturing for them, just painted different.

Ah. I've never had my hands on one of them but I'm glad it's not too significant.

I've got an original one that's in a pretty great condition but my second controller is falling apart so that's good to hear.

I actually prefer the new ones. Everything feels a bit tighter, which I'm totally okay with. The plastic feels a bit more rugged as well.

Oh my, now I just have to get my hands on one.

I just wish they still made WaveBirds, I've never actually owned one of those. Unfortunately even used ones seem to be a pain to get over here.

It's so funny; the actual controllers are like, $5 and under around here. The receivers though, they're $30.

See those prices sound great to me but they aren't priced like that over here and the shipping costs just kill it if I go with overseas ones.

But hey I guess those prices are great if you need a new WaveBird and still have a working receiver? The controllers aren't that cheap over here either though. Dammit.

At least I'm not looking for one of those Hori controllers. ...Yet. :l

What has been lovely is buying PAL GC games and forcing progressive scan on them through Swiss. Compatibility is a bit iffy but I've been able to save a decent amount of money thanks to it.
