Just ordered Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Paper Mario TTYD.....it begins

I'm planning on buying a UK GC and component cables then mainly buying NTSC titles and using freeloader. For games that dont support Progressive Scan the component cable will still make things look better than RGB right?

Nah, RGB is better than component for 480i. But only marginally.

Not really, but you can force games into 480p using a program on an sd media launcher and get more of your money's worth from component. The program even forces another optional graphical effect.

I can no longer play modern, broken PES so I'm hoping to find if there are any authentic (i.e. Based on reality) football games on the gamecube.

Not fifa though.

I hear that International Superstar Soccer was released on gc. ISS 2 and ISS 3 apparently.

Can anyone advise which of those are the better game, or if there are other games I haven't mentioned please make a suggestion.

I do have Mario Smash Football before anyone asks, it is awesome, but not the kind I'm after here.

Picked these up recently, screens taken from a Wii with component cables in widescreen(from left to right: Bloody Roar Primal Fury, Star Fox Adventures which I played and beaten when it was 1st out but finally own it for the collection, 1080 Avalanche and X-Men Legends):

I'm having a hard time figuring out a fair value for these online and was wondering if the inhabitants of this thread might have an idea.

I've got a DDR Mario Mix set with the game and dance pad (no box), and both Donkey Konga 1 and 2 and three sets of bongos (again, no boxes) to potentially go with (keeping the last one for Jungle Beat because you better believe I ain't gonna get rid of that!)

Any ideas?

My gamecube and component cable deal on another forum fell through as the seller realised he could sell the cable on eBay separately for twice what I was gonna buy the stuff off him for :(

so now I'm deliberating a gc with rgb or just buying a wii and getting a component cable :hmm: think I might just go the gc route as I'd love to own the console again.

That sucks. I wish everyone could get 480p from their cubes. I wonder if any progress at all has been made on a GC HDMI solution?

Not to rub it in, but just to sorta illustrate what a shame it is, I forced RE2 into 480p last night and it looked like I was playing on a slightly over powered PC. I really wish I had a capture device so I could compare Dreamcast and GC forced 480p on Resident evil ports. I think the GC might come out on top... Damn shame comp cables aren't in everybody's reach.

I honestly don't see myself getting GC Component Cables and it's a shame as I have the perfect capture card for it.:/

I won a relatively cheap auction for Eternal Darkness. I actually know nothing about it except it was made by Silicon Knights and Dyack. It has a good reputation, is it justified?

That opinion will vary depending on the person. I believe the reputation it has is justified, as it's actually my favorite survival horror game of all time, surpassing even Silent Hill 2. It's not scary to me (no game is) but the atmosphere, story and gameplay are all incredibly unique and totally awesome.

I don't think it's aged that well (partially because it was originally going to be on the 64) but I think it's worthy of at least one play through due to it's uniqueness. I've never played another game like it. Enjoy :)

It's a good game. It kind of sucks that once you learn to play it well you'll never see an unscripted insanity effect again =[

It's a weird game. I never beat it but it is a singular experience. I'd recommend knowing as little as possible going in, so be sure not to read up on it too much or anything. And if you're prone to...hmm, how do I put this...quick reactions...try to remember the game is going to try to mess with you, and to take it in stride as much as possible. :)

I played it for the first time this year. It's very good and definitively justified.

It's the only game that's ever made me throw the controller and run to the other end of the house, lol.

I always keep a Maximillian save file for messing with insanity effects on a whim.

My first play-through was awesome. Very tense, good use of sound. Tried again a few years later and didn't think it held up too well, especially the combat. Definitely have a go, I think you'll have fun on your first time round.

Ok, so I haven't been able to fix this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=839147

and oh god I just want to play TTYD already :(

I guess my best option is to dig out my Wii from storage and play it with component cables on the HDTV?

That or try to find an old CRT locally. Though I'd hate to buy one that has a similar issue seeing as I couldn't really test it before buying..

Wii U being able to read GCN disks would be so convenient with HDMI :(

Damn it looked like you were so close. Did you mess with all the settings in the end?

Four games added to the collection today: Kirby Air Ride, PoP: Sands of Time, Sonic Adventure DX, and Star Fox Adventures. That brings me up to 33 games.

This was, however, at the cost of a bunch of older games, mostly 64 stuff. I made a thread a while back about getting back intro collecting retro games, and it's weird because I have a totally different mindset now about game collecting. The oldest system I have physical games for is now the PS2. I feel like anything before that comes with a ton of undue stress. I was fretting over CRTs and battery saves and such more than I ever sat down to play. Collecting was compulsion. Now I don't think I ever want to collect anything that I can't just play in my living room on my main television.

I was bitten hard by the collecting bug and in two years spent hundreds of dollars only to find out that PS2 and up is where I really like to collect. GameCube has been my absolute favorite, so I'm thankful to have figured that out. Next up, I plan on tracking down Fire Emblem.

Yeah pretty much.

Googling found this though so I guess it's an actual problem with some sets?

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=198444

I think I spoke too soon - I'd thought I'd cracked the overscan problem but I haven't. On closer inspection the two SIZE options are V SIZE 50 for 50Hz signals and V SIZE 60 for 60Hz signals. Both control the vertical size (height) of the screen, and do not affect the horizontal size (width).

It's puzzling. I've gone through all the options in the Service Menu (1 - 39), and while there is a vertical size adjustment option which works well, there is no option for the adjusting the horizontal size! Perhaps there is a sub-menu I haven't seen. Anyhow, it looks like I'm stuck with the overscan for the time being.

my old samsung tv which seemed to be a clone of a toshiba missed off a bit of picture at the sides so it tried to fix it in the service menu but i couldn't find the option for the horizontal size, i could adjust the vertical size and move the picture up/down and left/right but not the horizontal size so i just had to leave it.

The one thing I do know about it is the fake console errors.

Screw it, went the Wii with component cables route after realising it was mostly nostalgia causing me to want the little purple box again and nothing else. The games will look better through component on the Wii on my HDTV.

Managed to nab Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos for around £20 each too.

Got a GameCube around launch, but sadly my GameCube collection is small compared to my N64 and Wii collection. I think I have around 30 games. I love this console and I'm probably going to work on adding to the collection over time. During this era was the rise of mainstream PC gaming, so there was a lot of stuff to play.

I'm really regretting getting rid of my Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn copies, but a highschool kid gotta get money to buy more game :::::::(

Yeah highschool me had no source of steady income unfortunately and cared little about collecting/keeping games even if I enjoyed them, needed to trade them/sell to buy more, I was caught in the gamestop cycle, such a viscous cycle that haunts my Gamecube particularly even today.
:( dumbass kid.

Are there any interesting uses of the GBA linking outside of Four Swords, Crystal Chronicles, Rayman 3, Wind Waker and Pac Man Vs. I should know about? I love when it's used well, but not that many games took advantage.

The new games you got for those better be worth it.

I never sold any of my games as a kid as I knew I would want to play them sometime in the future. Gotta think long term yo!

Sadly, I only lost some games =(

Even as a kid I knew that shit was fucked up, if funds were low, I opted for 1:1 game trades with friends instead.

Animal Crossing let you download the island to the GBA—there was a rather large money cheat here that I of course never took advantage of 😉—as well as download a pattern editor for the Able Sisters' shop. You could also transmit (some?) NES games to a GBA and play them there. These were all disconnected-operation things, so you could take them on the go and (where applicable) come back later to re-connect to the game.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for answering.

I was just looking at the list of games that support it and was wondering if people had experience using the GBA link with any of the following games:
- Road Trip: The Arcade Edition
- Mega Man X: Command Mission
- The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
- Any Harry Potter game
- Anything else of real interest really

Anyone have any experience with Dakar 2? apparantly hooking up to the GC allows you to play the unreleased GBA version of the game...

Well, my el-cheapo GC cable arrived from Japan!

As expected, the plastic housing around the D-Terminal side is gone. But that's fine, I think! There's no actual damage to it, and it looks like the plastic was removed VERY carefully.... must have needed it gone to fit in something?

The Gamecube side though, HOLY HELL NINTENDO. I have pretty big hands, and this thing is MASSIVE. I know they've got the chip that handles conversion in there, but it's HUGE!

IMAG0302_zpscqgsrapu.jpg

Component cable is the same way, I was really surprised to see how big it is.

And couldn't you get audio out of this huge-ass thing too, Nintendo? Honestly. It's kind of funny that you STILL need to have the system plugged into the composites for sound.

Checked around, and it looks like you can order a $10 connector from Solaris Japan that turns the D-Terminal cable into a Component cable. They are identical.

it's a digital video port isn't it? I wonder if there were DVI cables planned.

Outputs video and audio signals digitally. They must have figured that if digital was a big thing, they could easily do that. So strange. I've actually seen a few mods to the D-Terminal / Component cable that involve extracting optical audio out!

that's so amazing

its a real pity that port never took off

FWIW, my favorite use for the connection was transferring my Mario Golf character from the GBA game to Toadstool Tour. Advanced tour is one of my most played games of all time and being able to bring my maxed out character into Toadstool Tour was awesome.

The way I heard it, is D terminal is still analogue. It would make sense then that you can simply buy an adapter cable for stariaght componenet connection. Plus it still has the same encoder chip as the component cable.

There is hope for an all digital video and audio solution from the cube in the not too distant future.

Yup! Some Japanese display devices have D-Terminal instead of Component, since it's a more compact version of the same thing, I guess. My XRGB Mini has it, which is how I'm going to hook this badboy up.

Also, WHOA. That is some news! YEARS later.
