The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I just got my hands on copies of Skies of Arcadia and the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Pokemon Bank for Gamecube. I lost my mind, but kept my cool buying em. I never thought I would get these for my collection but it totally happened! And for a super great price. Gamecube is cool.

I own most all of the rare titles including some new but still need the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Box with the big box. Hopefully I can find it for a decent price soon.

True but that's a recent game entirely about fan service and a community OT entirely devoted to appreciating that fan service. You go in there and you know what you're in for, and really none of that bothers me in the slightest. It's the awkwardness in the context of this thread and for one guy only to carry on like that.

Completely dead? Maybe you just need to tweak the POT.

All this P.N.03 talk
and butts =D
make me want to give it a go this week. I'm stuck in Dragon Warrior II right now anyway.

Gotta get myself a GameBit and a multimeter, one of my GameCubes is having that problem where it's not reading discs consistently and it looks like a relatively simple fix. Thanks!

The trial missions in P.N.03 were definitely quite a chore, especially during the last couple of missions. But once everything is unlocked, you can just concentrate on the main game itself, which lasts for about an hour and a half. So all of the boring stuff happens during the first couple of runs.
I have replayed it dozens of times using different suits or tactics while also concentrating on speed or a high score. Sure the environments are repetitive, but I think there's just enough variety with the introduction of different and harder enemies along the missions.
Of course, the development of the game was kind of rushed and there was a lot of potential that went unutilized. However, there's only one thing that really can affect my enjoyment and that's the size of the small digipad on the gamecube controller that has to be used in order to pull off energy drives. It's quite hard for me to push the directions precisely enough as it has to be done rather fast at times which results in a failed attempt and a broken combo chain. The controls themselves are not bad, but quite tight actually. It's just not easy to master them.

This guy knows what he's talking about. The game is certainly not for everyone, but that doesn't mean it's bad. And people who complain about the controls - they rarely say why they're bad. No, you can't shoot while running, but that's because the game isn't designed for that. It's a corridor shooter, not a Tomb Raider.

What I missed most from P.N.03 was content. Once you've unlocked the thong suit, there's little else to do - and you can have her bare-assed in less than ten hours, both runs included. If Mikami had more time with it, I'm sure he would've included extra modes and made the game at least slightly longer.

Also, I don't think the controls are difficult at all, it's not like you need to remember a lot of button combinations or such. But people always start playing with expectations, and when P.N.03 gives them something completely different they frown and call the conrols bad. That's really how it is.

And why don't people like talking about her butt? I know I know, it's a thread for discussing GameCube games, but her butt is a big part of P.N.03 in all seriousness. For me it's no more strange than talking about Link's funny facial expressions in Wind Waker (just an example).

I also love Vanessa as a character - she has more going for her than just a fat ass. Even though the game only uses text dialogue (almost no voice), they manage to give her a sarcastic, "I don't take you crap" attitude. She's a very cool character without trying too hard. I like that a lot.

I've been collecting Gamecube game for a few years now and I've recently hit a milestone. I've filled up my old movie rack:

I'm going to need to get another shelf from a thrift store or something soon, I've been putting new games like the ones below by taking out sports titles and storing g them in my closet for the time being:

A majority of the games have been local purchases through thrift stores, flea markets and conventions with a few harder to find titles coming off Ebay. I think it's coming along nicely.

Wow. Do you have any kind of calculation on how much that have cost? :)

Really impressive collection, hats off to you.

Are there any good tutorials on using this thing and homebrew on the GC? Right now I'm super disappointed with my experience with the SD Media Launcher, but maybe that's cause I'm not using it properly.

What are you looking to do with it? I ended up going the saved game route and get by with just two 59 block cards. Would be much easier if I got myself an SD Gecko a.k.a. SD memory card adapter which I might just build my own one day. I'm only using it for GBi right now and probably won't go much further than that.

Nice collection. With Gamecube starting to increase it's nice to have a head start on collecting for it. Looks real nice!

It's hard to get a total cost down. the ones I got from Ebay like Gotcha Force, Megaman X Collection and Skies of arcadia were purchased by reselling doubles. There are also quite a few that i've gotten through trades. If I had to guess I'd think maybe I've spent ~$1,500 over the last few years. Many games I've found for $2-$5.

That's a lot of GC games. I'm nearly done picking up GC games but my collection is only about one of your shelves. Can't say I'm totally done, since like once a year I get an itch to get a game.

On another note, I saw this SD Media Launcher cover someone made. Thinking about cleaning it up and editing it some. But I'm lazy and don't have Photoshop anymore.

I'm jealous of you people who can just walk into a thrift store and buy gamecube games. I never find anything but terrible sports titles.

I have to use Amazon =/

Ebay is typically better than Amazon. Prices tend to be a bit lower, and good listings will have pictures.
I actually prefer shopping on Amazon, and dat 1-2 day shipping helps. I only use ebay when there's an item that's not on amazon or when I can find a better deal.

I am more of an eBayer because I find that pictures are more common, so I can see what I am truly getting ;)

I have been looking for an original Night Trap red box for Sega CD, and it's helpful to see what the condition is like.

eBay accepts PayPal, has pictures, and you can work the angles in searches for a potential deal. I've always gone to eBay first for used games. I used to go to Amazon first for new games but they upped the price for free shipping and now charge tax... It's more 50/50 with eBay for new games, far as I'm concerned.

I never use Paypal anymore, Amazon does have pics(just isn't as common) and not everything has tax from them, though I see what you mean.

My word, what a collection. In comparison, I have around 20 or so. There are a few more I want to get, maybe in good time though.

I've kept spreadsheets for all of my retro collecting, because I'm a bit crazy. For GameCube I have 27 titles and have have spent $240 over the last two years, which is when I started. Most expensive game is Twin Snakes for $24.73. I've really been focusing on the best exclusive GameCube games and have six left on my list of to-gets. For every system I always end up with a few lingering titles, because the cost never seems to line up with how much I want them.

Gotcha force is pretty much the only remaining game that I want to add to my collection that's not available elsewhere, but goddamn it's near $200 now. Ugh.
I had a chance to get it for a few bucks once, but I didn't know it was rare so I let it go because I thought the game looked mediocre so I let my colleague have it.

One of my biggest failings as a collector to this day...

PN03 was fun although I totally get why it's not for most people.

Resident Evil 4 was made better because of that game. Definitely think PN03 allowed them to mess around with the camera and movement to where we finally got the now-standard 'over the shoulder' view.

Mostly use the gameboy interface. I found a recent build I think, but there was no info on how to put it on the card and where files needed to live. I think I got it set up right, but only 1 of the 3 modes will load, and honestly I didn't find it vs the default worth all the money and hassle to get it loaded. I think it was just the default GB Interface. I couldn't get ULL or LL modes to load at all. I'm pretty disappointed in the build quality of the SD memory card adapter itself. For how much this thing cost, it feels like a cheap chinese knock off that cost 50 cents to build.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just pick up the JP version when I head over there this summer. Doubt I want to listen to the dialogue anyway.

Are the ports of the four Zelda games both good ports and direct ports (IE not modified from their original versions)?

I have never played a Zelda game and would like to, the promo disc sells for only like $45.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are altered. They have button labels changed at least to match the coloring of the GC controller. They also run at 480 like the Wii Virtual Console. There may be other minor changes... I'm pretty sure OoT is based on the later N64 releases and doesn't have the religious references and Gannondorf's blood is green.

That version of Majora's Mask is also garbage, it has really bad slowdown and crashes. As far as I know the NES games are the same and fine and Ocarina of Time is pretty good on GC plus actually supports rumble which the VC release didn't.

The only game in the Collectors Edition that had problems is Majora's Mask. The game is prone to crashing and has a lot of slowdown. But this is the way I've played the game myself for the very first time and personally never ran into any crashing. All the games have some changes made to them however. Different coloured buttons, new text, 480 instead of 240 and couple other things.

A local store has the component cable for $200.

Should I just go ahead and get that, or what for whatever "plug and play" option comes out later this year? I am not sure what lies ahead with that, so weighing my options..

I got the impression the plug and play HDMI option will be relatively cheap, at least compared to component cables. We don't know for sure though.

Last I saw, Badass Consoles said they would have some news "soon." Looking forward to it as well.

That's what I am nervous about. "Cheap".

I have been checking their website regularly, and there are behind schedule on the UltraHDMI mod for N64. I wonder if that means they have been pushing GCN development, or the company is facing a snag. Not sure!

You might as well wait and the gcvideo-lite cable standalone implementations will surely be cheaper than the OEM cables but they will still be constrained by the price of an FPGA and custom manufacturing which means it will still be pretty expensive.

I saw mention that some of their boards were delayed, which was out of their hands. Don't remember if that was for N64 or GC.

I rebought the original Metroid Prime last year, after selling it when the Trilogy came out. Finally got around to starting it last night. It's been like 7 years since I've played Metroid Prime 1, and the game is still just absurdly good. While I'm obviously familiar with how the game works, I'm kind of amazed by just how good of a job the game does of teaching you the mechanics without being too obvious about it. And it's great to see all these environments again -- the level design and atmosphere are definitely better than in the sequels.

Oh, and I'm really glad I can play this with a Gamecube controller again. The game was built for these controls, and I'm glad I finally remedied my mistake in trying to use Trilogy as a substitute.

I feel that Echoes has a similar high quality of level design, not because it´s effective at teaching mechanics but because it assumes you've played Prime and instead it focuses on being a real test. Teaching the player is important but I'd actually prefer a game to be more rewarding at high levels of play than low levels, because it's extremely satisfying.

Prime 1 is amazing, I just think 2 has a lot of unrespected value and that puts it on equal footing for me. And the environments are cooler than Prime's fire world, ice world, ect.

Also totally agree on the Gamecube controller thing, best controller for the games made for it IMO(Resi4, Melee, Prime, F-Zero GX)

Yeah, to be clear, I love Metroid Prime 2, as well. I replayed that one last year, and I think I actually liked it better than I did the first time I played it. That game brings the gloom like nothing else. Was a bit of a pain in the ass to rebuy both of the games on GC, but I'm glad I did.

I hope the build quality is good. I'd happily pay $100 for a decent pair of cables.

Glad you got the GC games again. I have the first two on GC, Corruption and the Trilogy on Wii. I like both the GC controls and the Wii ones for different reasons. The GC game controls were built around the controller, and they worked very well. The move/look system on Wii is so simple, but beam switching doesn't feel as fluid as the C-stick. With regard to Metroid Prime still holding up...yes it certainly does. The game will, IMO, continue to hold up really well in the future. It's a timeless classic (just like Super).
