The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I havent had any luck with my sd cart port bought from them, and after some googling, many people say they are bad quality, but i dont know.

They are legitimately shit. Really.

Datel have always made great software and absolutely horrendous hardware. I bought a £2 sd card adapter from eBay for the wii/GameCube and threw the Datel one away. Datel one kept crashing, refused to load most items from SD and barely fit in the slot without getting stuck.

Back in the day I bought a Datel Equaliser cheat cartridge for the N64. That was great until it broke. I then won a free N64 Action Replay from N64 Magazine. Fantastic! ...it stopped working after a few weeks.

I do have a spare sd adapter that works perfectly if anyone wants it, just let me know and send me the postage amount.

Yeh, it's the disc you're buying it for, really. Just so you can launch stuff without a chip. I just went with a chip because it was $5 or so and not that hard to install, and got myself a better SD adapter online for like, $2.

Did you ever get the non-SDHC card?

Yeah, I actually had one in my old camera, so i just concluded that it was the adapter.

I bought two of those. Got to the UK within a week and worked like a dream. Could load backups from SD too without a problem when the Datel adapter wouldn't even let me boot up the Swiss file browser.

Thanks, im buying this!

Managed to get a CiB copy of Wario World for $25. Can't wait to play that again. With this I've finally gotten all of the games that I used to rent as a kid. Now I'll start getting stuff I've never played.

This game is the definition of mediocrity imo, but congrats anyways!

I have two white eneloops whose only purpose in life is to exist in my wii remote... and that wii remote's only purpose in life is to launch melee on my wii.

One man's trash. I really liked the game. Maybe by Treasure standards it is mediocre, but it's still better than a lot of games on the cube.

Yeah, I guess that is true. I did end up beating it, and even completing it 100%, so that probably means i had more fun with it than i remember. The bonus levels that were kinda Super Mario Galaxy-like were neat!

I remember really enjoying it.

Side, for the chip alternative to an SD Card Launcher to get GBI, does it require sodering? Can someone link me to information about the various ways to get GBI?

Finally had a chance to hook my GameCube up and give Swiss a proper go. Thanks everyone in this thread for reminding me and telling me of all the stuff that Swiss can do because holy crap this is fun.

Forcing Mario Kart DD, Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and a bunch of others into 480p/576p widescreen has made for a great afternoon.

I am already getting a soldering iron for GC Video and SNES RGB...

xeno gc is incredibly easy to install, and cheap. just a matter of placing it over the correct chip and soldering the points in the PCB that are exposed, no wires involved. significantly easier than rgb modding a snes mini (which is easy anyway)

and then just burn swiss to a mini dvd. easy

Where is the best place to buy a xeno chip?

ehhhh

places.

look on assembler games. there's a guy there who sells chips for every console. You may also have local sellers, I got my saturn modchip from rob webb at consolegoods, and it works perfectly.

Any advantage in using a Xeno over the SD Media launcher? Already have to open up my guinea pig system to reattach the HDMI board (lost the ability to bring up the video menu) so if it's worth it I might as well toss a Xeno in there too.

it's permanent, allows flawless backups via mini dvd and it safeguards you incase you lose the media launcher disc. It also enables full region free.

you can actually download the media launcher disc from certain sites and burn it to a dvd. but there's not really any need, as you can just burn swiss or gbi to a minidvd and use that with no issues on a modded gc.

Sold. I ran a 16 player Double Dash LAN a couple months ago and, when I found out a disc was toast, was extremely disappointed when the SD launcher couldn't run the game without killing the LAN connection (too slow in the initial load). It'll be nice to have an alternative that would actually work.

yep, works for me. It's why I sold my SD launcher!

I actually wanted to play double dash LAN with some mates last week, so I copied their disc via cleanrip on my wii, burnt it to minidvd and it worked perfectly.

I'd actually rather have the SD Media Launcher so I don't have to deal with discs.

Though I'm already going through all the work, it wouldn't be too much more to go and purchase a DVD burner and discs. Though I would have to throw it into my server at this point as my main build is in a M-itx now.

They would work with the first model and RGB-modded Jrs., yes.

Also, it has come up - at the very least, in the Upscaler/CRT and Genesis threads.

I wish there was a directory of all of the retro threads at the end of the OT for each retro subject. Would make it easier to keep track of things.

Edit: Wow, can't believe I missed that.

But they would actually work with the SNES? I'm surprised I haven't seen these mentioned before.

The SNES cables work with any RGB compatible system (via mods or native support) that has the Nintendo multi-out. So SNES, AV Famicom, N64, PAL GC and anything else I'm forgetting.

That's weird, I never got that with my svideo cable on N64. And besides, svideo on N64 is still an improvement since it doesn't have composite flaws like rainbow banding, dot crawl and fuzzier image.

I have a capture card and all the relevant cables + XRGB3 so I'll do a comparison over the weekend for those interested.

The general retro op should have links to all the retro threads.

So here we are in 2016. The NES is being brought back and there are still no GCN titles on the virtual console.

Nintendo went through the trouble to make a GCN adaptor and got the factories spinning up GCN controllers again. All we need are the titles! Melee is getting big, Super Mario Sunshine is making waves in the speedrunning community.

It's an untapped market full of potential.

Eh, whatever. Homebrew does what Nintendont.

I have my entire GameCube library playable, via native hardware compatibility, on my Wii U with native GameCube controller support via the adapter, and support for Wii U Pro controllers and Dualshocks.

Plugged my GC back in the for the first time in a long while. Ugh, looks like shit on my HDTV. Can't believe those component cables are going for nearly 400 now. Hopefully when these mods hit the market the prices will fall back to earth. No way it's worth that much when I have the Wii Component cables, Dolphin, and a Nintendont capable Wii U. Retro gaming prices are completely out of control.

How much are you thinking is reasonable? I can see the homebrew cables still hitting ~$100 due to the cost of the FPGA involved.

To me the part that seems unreasonable is that they're that expensive when there are better solutions out there today. People can charge whatever they want for them of course, but it just seems like the retro games market is getting swallowed by collectors trying to hoard stuff rather than people actually playing and appreciating this games/consoles. It's also ~3.5x what I remember seeing them for a scant year ago.

The internal mod is apparently going to be $50-$65. The external mod is probably going to cost more (sans paying for installation) since there is more development and production/manufacturing involved, but I wouldn't expect it to be over $100. My blind guess not knowing everything involved would be about $20-$25 more.

As much as I want one, it's tough to weigh whether it's worth it. I already have a Sewell HDMI adapter for my Wii (which is legit, I recommend it). But I also like the GC more and there's the Gameboy Player...

Those are high ball BIN prices. Recently sold prices are are mostly in the low to mid $200 range. Still too much. I got mine for $140 from a fellow Gaffer.

Probably looks best on a CRT HDTV if anything.

I'd like to know more about this Wii HDMI adapter. I still have my OG Wii and am worried for when my current TV dies on me. A lot of TVs here in the UK don't com with component ports these days. How is the HDMI adapter? Any reviews?

Thanks.
