The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

i'm still amazed that was a thing, didn't even notice it got that hot but as soon as reports came in, i killed it with a quickness

still on my sega kick; dreamcast (VGA > HDMI > XRGB) looks fantastic but now i wanna get some of the GC ports, trying to see if i have anything worth trading for Skies or PSO, heh

ps as a Naka fan, would i dig Billy Hatchet? bums me out that i only go looking for this after all my local Gamestops cleared out their GC stock, i was so sure Zelda TP would drop below $25 or whatever before they shipped it off (presumably to destroy) but nooooo

I had my Wii from AU launch day, with WiiConnect24 enabled the whole time and it still runs like new, maybe I'm just lucky?

Not on 24/7 anymore, since everything's been transferred to the Wii U, but yeah, never had an issue.

Also interested to hear about Billy Hatcher, have been somewhat interested in it for a while, but never played it.

Maybe because you just didn't see it yet. It took a while for me.

I saw it when I played Xenoblade after a while, little black dots started blinking everywhere, because it fucked up the GPU. It died like a month or two after. :/

Our launch Wii (which I left to my parents when I moved out) started showing it in the sandstorms in NSMB Wii, but it hasn't deteriorated since (I turned off WiiConnect24 as soon as I saw it). It doesn't get used too often these days but I'm surprised that it has held up pretty well.

I always wanted a jet black GameCube. But I never had the money when they first released, now I don't have the money or time to spot for hours on eBay.

I still contend that NGC has one of the best controllers.

I hooked up the ol' cube yesterday. Will have to take a few pics of my collection later when I get home from work. I still don't have any memory cards, so all I did with it yesterday was play around with the Game Boy Player, but even that brought back the memories in a big way!

I have to hit up the eBay this weekend after I get paid to get a couple of memory cards. They're only about $10 each for 251s so it's not a huge deal.... I just wish I knew where all of mine ran off to!

damn, i noticed my wii was displaying little black flickering dots, always assumed it had been like that from day one, just never noticed, bah now i know why, mine still works though i only play it very infrequently for half an hour or so

If I'm not mistaken they both look like mini DVDs and so should work on the Gamecube. Don't bother with the action replay. You can't enter codes with that version (seriously, Datel?) and I hear the bulit-in ones are kinda crap (infinite lives and other zero imagination things). Wii versions will probably only work if your Wii is on like Firmware 2.1 (before the clock!).

I hear they don't work on platinum gamecubes. This video seems to confirm. Not sure which 1.06 that is though and since google isn't case sensitive it seems 1.06b doesn't work with platinum but not sure about 1.06B.

Like has been said, you can use a Wii and homebrew instead. Just be careful about leaving the Wii on standby with memory cards in, especially with that stupid connect 24 nonsense (damages Wii GPU and heats the memory card slot).

Gamecube Action replays work on Platinum Gamecubes. At least on my Platinum Gamecube it does, though I have one of the original limited edition Platinums. You can also add codes to it. Maybe I have some different version of the action replay but mine came with a memory card where you can add new codes to it and such. (ignore all this if you're talking about a Wii Action replay or something)

Those new versions are disk only, do not come with the memory card, so you cannot enter codes (stupid).

And the older models, with memory cards, are now too expensive due to F-Zero AX discovery.

My Game Cube has been boxed up for several years now and I have been wanting to go back and replay PN03, plus use the GB Player again. Time to get it hooked up. I think the Wii will remain disconnected after seeing those component cable comparison shots, although my only options are to use it on an HDTV or via composite cables on an old Samsung GXTV. Are there any issues with playing non 480P GC games on HDTVs?

It won't look quite as good, but still playable. I played via composite cables on an HDTV and it was playable. I'd expect it to be much nicer via component though, but I'm still waiting on the appropriate cables.

I'd probably pick up PSO if the price was reasonable. I guess it's so inflated because it's an exploit loader, and Plus is inflated just because of the price of the original.

The deinterlacing will probably make the picture look even crappier than it would just from scaling.

But I'd still rather use Wii with component over Gamecube with composite or RF. I'd have to see comparisons for s-video, and if RGB SCART was an option I'd probably go with that assuming GCN component cables are out (for me, they are!). I'm in the US though, so no SCART.

I'd imagine it's inflated do to how active the community is still. Granted I haven't logged in in at least a year.

Xbox version is cheap, not that I could play it since I don't have the system. No idea if there is still a community for it though. Edit: Apparently it was tied to XBL and is gone due to that, and no private servers.

There is no community for Xbox version, in fact it's not even worth $0.01 due to Xbox Live being required to even play single player. I don't think anyone has hacked that yet. So unlike GC, Xbox version is unplayable currently.

I should have clarified that I have component cables for the GC too. I never tried it on an HDTV, but the little TV I would be hooking it up to had some pretty bad lag issues when I tried running some PS2 games, via a PS3, on it previously. I'm hoping that won't be the case with the PS2/GC hooked up directly to it.

TV settings could also be at fault. Disabling any video processing the TV does can help with that. SD content probably gets processed more than HD content.

Took a picture of my collection, just for fun:

And here's also stuff that's damaged, missing, or needs cleaning: http://i.imgur.com/zO9iak9.jpg

I probably won't be picking up more for a while, but I know a bunch of stuff is missing from here. REmake mostly, but also Lost Kingdomses, XD, Odama, Battalion Wars, Chibi Robo, Beyond Good and Evil, replacement Master Quest. Probably plenty of others too. Open to suggestions. It seems like I've covered so much ground with the system, but there's still so much more to go.

Not that happy about owning Nightfire, Bounty Hunter, or Spiderman, and Rainbow Six seems like more of an Xbox or PS game. Other than that though I'm pretty content with most of the games that are there. Gamecube had so many good games. :3

I guess I should give it another chance. I always lost interest when I played it, but it was admittedly only a few times.

Finally, I lost the thread but on NeoGAF we had someone who wanted to play Four Swords Adventure by replacing GBAs by a full set of 4 Gamecubes with GBA players... I eventually did it too last year! Unfortunately never plugged on the whole thing (I havn't 4 TVs) but I have all the shit needed and tested it in 2 players mode :)
I'm sorry. What?!! Where is this thread? I need to see this.

Even I didn't go THAT far...

Here's my Cube collection:

Japanese:

American:

(The paperless case holds an Action Replay.)

I have a purple launch Japanese Game Cube, modded to play American games, the ethernet attachment, a purple GameBoy Player, and I believe I still have a purple screen add-on for it somewhere as well, making the system look pretty tall with everything attached.

My collection is on the smaller side; sold a number of titles off years back. Some games were also replaced by Wii versions, like Metroid Prime (got the trilogy), Biohazard 0, and Biohazard 4. Got rid of Double Dash because it was crap (sorry...it was) and sold off Smash Bros. Melee when Brawl came out. I have a Japanese and an American copy of PN03 because I got the U.S. version dirt cheap brand new in 2003 or 2004. Also used to have American versions of Beach Spikers and F-Zero GX. This is because I used to work at a game store and would often bring my own games to display or play during downtime. I got tired of bringing my Japanese Cube to play the imports, so I picked up American copies just to play at work, LOL.

At one point, the Game Cube was my system of choice during the last console generation, but releases dried up and many multiplatform titles ended up being the worst on this system, so I stopped playing it before the PS2 and Xbox. When I look back at this system, my favorite titles were Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX, Beach Spikers, PN03, Biohazard, RE4, MGS TTS, and Soul Calibur II. The latter was my favorite version of the game, because Link was a much better guest character than out-of-play-is-this-really-the-best-character-you-could-have-chosen Heihachi on PS2 and LOL-LOL-YUCK-Medievil Spawn on Xbox. Not the best system for Nintendo's own first-party titles IMO, although there were certainly some solid titles. I also enjoyed a lot of the EA Big titles on this system back in the day.

Nightfire is a really solid game, it's no Timesplitters 2 but still

I guess I should give it another chance. I always lost interest when I played it, but it was admittedly only a few times.
I like it in multiplayer with some of the cheats/unlockables enabled. The single player might be okay but I never liked it.

I love long-distance grappling. Any game with alternate means of fast travel (jetpacks, vehicles, etc.) is a win for me.

Ever play "random" weapons and get a set that spawns with the golden gun? One hit kills all day, every day.

Skyrail and Ravine are the best maps by far. Sentinel wars from opposing sides are always fun. And Ravine has a great number of glitches for advanced means of warfare. (Stand on an obscure cliffside and launch sentinels while people wonder where you are.)

Placing tripmines and timed mines in the skyrails is always hilarious.

Oddjob wars are neat too, because he has an OHKO hat that is wildly inaccurate over a long distance.

Yep, Nightfire was great. Developed by Eurocom too.

I have Timesplitters and Nightfire, for some reason Nightfire has had infinitely more play in multiplayer.
Bots + Skyrail + those little remote control tanks/helicopters + grapple hooks just made for an endlessly enjoyable time.

i have a GC & 4 swords + component and would totally buy a GBA just to get more people playing that shit..locals here are lame. dying to see what i missed out on

At a game convention I saw a 5 CRT, 5 GCN, 4 GBA link Four Swords setup, along with a 10-Player Saturn Bomberman setup.

Not enough people to get a full game for either

Gamecube OS Easter Eggs

Hold the Z button while turning on the Gamecube and hold for alternative sounds when the system boots up.

Hold the Z button on all four controllers for Japanese voices when booting up.

Turn on your Gamecube with no disk in the system, it takes you to a menu that looks like a cube. On this menu, you can hear ambient sounds playing in the background. If you record this screen for a little bit, (you need the audio.) and speed it up 16x in any basic program. You'll hear a little tune. That tune was actually the Famicom Disk System Startup theme. Nintendo made the Famicom Disk System in 1986, so it's cool that they'd add something like this to a newer console.

http://www.eeggs.com/tree/8439.html

Actually, I think you can load the system menu at any time by holding A as the console boots up (the "G" logo will begin spinning around faster and faster until the menu appears).

I'll take a picture of my modest collection soon. All the games in it were bought new (except for a Monopoly game someone gifted me) and shortly after their release.

After selling my Pokémon trading cards away for little to no money and instantly regretting having done so, I think I've never sold anything else of mine away, and that includes my GCN collection... I did gift my launch black console and some gamepads to my cousins along with a copy of Melee when I bought a Wii, though.

My only player's choice game is Pac-Man World 2, which I bought for Pac-Man Vs. after reading about it in Nintendo Power, and it was really worth it (and Pac-Man World 2 wasn't half bad, either)... Hey, now that I think about it, Pac-Man Vs. would be an amazing game to re-released on the WiiU! It was great fun whenever I invited friends over to play since pac-man is a lot simpler to play than, say, Melee.

My GameCube Collection

[Missing Super Smash Bros. Melee because my friend is borrowing it]

Had to print out some cover art because the games were loose, and for some, my printer was running low. Lol Need to make some newer ones soon. :)

My babies.

The one on the far left is my original Jet Black GCube I got in Xmas 2002, I put a Smash Bros. skin I bought from GameStop like in 2005 or 2006. The others I found at Thrift Shops and painted.

I have a very special GameCube collection...

I own all but four of the in store, kiosk demo disks for the GameCube... and I'm trying to get the last four.

I also own the somewhat hard to find Soul Calibur II demo disk, along with a few others.

If anyone out there has any GC demos to trade, let me know....

Only one i've got is the disc that came with Double Dash.

Btw anyone have any thoughts on Wario World?

Btw anyone have any thoughts on Wario World?

It's a decent platform/brawler, just kinda short. Has some nice dedicated platforming areas like Mario Sunshine's FLUDDless challenges and does some neat things with perspective in certain areas. Worth a look if you're a Wario fan or want to flesh out your Gamecube collection.
