The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Can confirm that Crazy Taxi has the proper Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack, that's the main reason I picked it up over the HD digital release.

Sonic Gems may be worthwhile for Sonic CD alone, depending on how much you enjoy Sonic CD, though the HD digital release is actually quite a bit better.

ah, cool! thanks man. i wish 2 went over, i dug that one where for some reason others dont seem to

yeah, i got that Sonic CD & like it, it'd be cool to have it on disc (beyond my OG sega-cd one heh) but the game gear ones are a cool bonus

Sonic CD in Gems Collection has a shorter activation time for time travel at least.

ah, that's kinda helpful too! replaying on PSN makes me realize how little i remember where the damn machines in the future are sometimes too

^yup, i need another one just because of it!

speaking of, is freeloader still the cheapest way to play it? my wii was region-free, but its unhooked at the moment & i don't recall my options on a US GC

That depends on modchip prices and their (chip/freeloader) respective availabilities I spose. I'm not really sure as I'm in PAL land and only have PAL games.

Crazy Taxi on Gamecube has the proper soundtrack, but it doesn't have all the licensed stores and all the character voices were re-recorded by Acclaim for the worse. The new voices are terrible.
To be honest, I still think the best home port of CT is the Dreamcast version. The triggers work so well with it too.

lol, did you know Sega payed for the product placement in Crazy Taxi? Sega gonna Sega.

^
Wow, I could swear that there were KFCs and Pizza Huts in the GameCube version. I don't have it with me now to check though, maybe I'm misremembering.

I wonder if I'm remembering correctly. After a google search the statement about re-recorded voices are definitely correct, but why would they need to record new dialogue unless the locations were changed? Hmm, maybe the voice actors has contract issues with other platforms.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, yellow label, stickers on case, case + disk are fairly worn (those light scratches) but not in bad condition, manual looks mint, $30. Yes/no?

I think it is too much for its condition. A few bucks more and you may, may grab a black label.

^i say yes; that shit is going up and that's a good price for a complete version, best entry in the series...jump on it!

Wow... I'm gonna have to check out how much my collection is worth. It's all mint.

I just got $40 for complete, decent-ish shape Luigi's Mansion on eBay. Was shocked.

I got it for US$ 24 last month on ebay. A complete black label, with all the inserts and folders.

Actually, I bought quite some games from the same seller. I got luck and got (all CIB black labels with all folders):
- Pikmin US$ 23
- Luigi Mansion US$ 24
- 1080 Avalanche US$ 12
- Animal Crossing (with mem card) US$ 24
- Rogue Leader US$ 13.50
- Rebel Strike US$ 13.50
- Mario Golf US$ 13.50
- Metroid Prime US$ 13.50
- Metroid Prime 2 US$ 13.50
- Super Mario Sunshine US$ 25.50

It gave a boost on my collection. I still need to find decent and chep copys of some games (Zelda, Paper Mario, Eternal Darkness).

Sure prices are higher, but you just have to have patience to find good deals.

Man, I just remembered that I need to pick up Metroid Prime 1 and 2 again... I sold them when I got the Trilogy, but I later came to my senses and realized I'd rather have the GC versions of those games... Why, you ask?

- Motion controls don't belong in these games. Metroid Prime 3, sure, but the first 2 weren't designed around it.
- Missing graphical effects. Ice beam just ain't the same.
- I liked MP2's difficulty the first time around.

Actually, there's a lot of Gamecube stuff I still need, and it's really just a matter of me getting in a GC sort of mood before I plunk down mad skrilla to finish this collection off. Because as it stands right now, my GC collection is an embarrassment. Girls won't even talk to me because of it.

Word, it took me at least 5-6 years to build my collection but the thing is almost all made of deals. My most memorable deal was when I got two copies of PSO I-II+ for 20$ at the flea market, but there's one that doesn't have a manual. My second is the Gamecube itself, it came with a GB Player, two games, a memory card and two controllers for 24,99$.

That feel of money well spent.

Man, I just tried to play Ikaruga again (now that I got my hands on a PS->GC converter). Aghhh, that game is impossible. I can credit feed to get up to level 4, but at that point, it's just death after death. Like I'm practically only alive until my invincibility runs out. Crazy stuff. Worst part is the thing that's killing me isn't even something I can hurt... it just keeps spinning and emitting waves of alternating colors. Feels much nicer on a dual shock though, even though I think the GCN controller is among the absolute best for 3D games.

Played some more Path of Radiance too. Chapter 17 seems like a significant difficulty spike. I got this though. :)

Also, I can't believe how much Luigi's Mansion has shot up to. I remember eBaying a copy CIB for 15 bucks a couple years back. I guess I should have filled the holes in my Cube collection sooner... I thought we'd have more time!

Aw yiss, got my Twilight Princess for 45 bucks complete on Ebay! It came in the mail yesterday. With that, I don't think I have any more personal "must have" games on the GC.

yeah...for me, that was PS1 games in college. i totally keep a list now.

i found 4 gamestops in my area which look like they carry GC games; i'm told they're at huge discounts (not expecting many in cases, much less manuals) so i'm gonna go hunting tomorrow. gunsmith got me a copy of Super Monkey Ball for like $1.30, and i think i found Puyo Pop Fever for about that price.

man i'd love to find Ikaruga, TP etc but chances are i'll just find a few fun titles for well under ebay prices.

Buying a Freeloader is way easier (and probably cheaper) than getting a hardware mod done. Also way more legal. :)

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, yellow label, stickers on case, case + disk are fairly worn (those light scratches) but not in bad condition, manual looks mint, $30. Yes/no?

I paid a little less or maybe the same for a like-new copy on eBay around Christmas. (To be fair, it was a Player's Choice edition as well but in perfect condition)

I bought a boxed D terminal cable from a carboot sale for £1 getting home thinking i got ripped of as i would never be able to use it.
This thread made look at the prices of them on ebay:)
It will be for sale soon are the ebay prices realistic?

Just started Star Fox Adventures though my PAL Wii with component anyway to force 480p?

Can someone remind me what the deal was with the NTSC GC and RGB Scart??.

I bought a NTSC GC (im in the UK) and i can remember i couldn't use a standard RGB Scart cable i had to buy a custom made cable that had 2 sockets on the end, one went to the Analog A/V port and the other to the Digital A/V port on the rear of the GC.

But i cant remember for the life of me why this was needed?

What possible can be wrong with the button config, the whole megaman series uses, what 2 whole buttons??
It's an issue for some, not others.
Basically the jump and shoot are backwards compared to what people are used to on the NES.
For that reason, I got the MM collections on PS2. Was cheaper, and with the larger d-pad/more natural feeling controls (to me), I just preferred it there.
Definitely doesn't make the GC version somehow awful though.

It used the yellow composite video cable for Vsync. Without it you just got a really crisp B&W image.

NTSC Gamecubes don't output RGB from the regular AV port, but PAL ones do.
On the other hand, PAL Gamecubes don't output S-Video, whereas NTSC ones do.

holy crap, hit 4 gamestops mostly raided long before but they're practically giving these things away, got:

Crazy Taxi
Custom Robo
FF CC
Midway Arcade 1
Rampage total destruction
Star wars rogue leader
star fox assault
soul calibur 2
puyo pop fever
Gun
shadow (it was like a dollar, man)
donkey konga
harvest moon: wonderful life
animal crossing
bomberman generation

and other random stuff like ps2 shinobi, contra, atari anthology, data east anthology (wii), deathsmiles, dj hero 1, sega tennis & some other stuff, i don't think i even broke $70, and the non GC stuff i listed here is easily more than half of that.

bummed out that one place i knew had geist & sonic r/other stuff i was curious about wouldn't even check, they just insisted they don't carry them anymore (they're usually in drawers in yellow sleeves like the unwanted ps2 games), but i really can't complain overall. wish id've known back in january or so, not like i had a great chance at zelda TP, ikaruga, cubivore etc but one cashier said he scooped up RE 2 & 3 for like $2 each, that must've been cool. so yeah, if you don't mind printing out covers & never having manuals, take a look around before they're gone!

ps not sure if anyone else was looking, but i found a freeloader for $10, might just grab to play doshin the giant again.

I told you :D

Btw if you ever find a Luigi's Mansion, i'll buy it from you.

Question, my cousin is going to be in Tokyo for a few days and I'm wondering if its worth having him try to look up some used game shops for things like component cables(they are d terminal over there right) i saw people saying how cheap they where so maybe its worth it? Anything else that might be a good idea to have him look for?

Grabbed both Mario Golf and ikaruga for $30 this morning. Not bad! Ikaruga was missing it manual though... :/

I tried to hit up Gamestops around here when they started blowing out the GCN stuff, but they were super unhelpful ("uhh if you want something specific I'll look in the back, otherwise no, you can't look through the envelopes"). Decided to say screw it :(

Does anyone here have any experience with Swiss? I had heard of it before but apparently it can also force widescreen with some pretty good compatibility, I didn't know that.
I'm pretty interested really.

Well that sucks for them. Could've boosted their preowned sales.

Dude, nice haul! I remember when my EB was clearing out GC games, I only got to pick at the final leftovers, but got LotR: The Third Age and Spiderman for $5 apiece. Could be worse I guess.

Also, got excited at seeing that cheap Freeloader, then found that shipping to AU would be $36, dangit!

damn, sucks that shipping is so high for some of you out of the country guys...are there any shipping services you could use? i know there's supposed to be a few for japan stuff to get here, anyway

yeah, that's exactly what i think this one place did (it was a moviestop, never saw one of those before)...i was kinda pushy, so one place printed out a short list of what they had left, another woudln't take out the envelopes but it was dead so the guy just read them to me one by one, haha.

Does anyone know if the 3rd party "shockwave" wireless GC controller works? It caught my eye because of the giant dpad. Has to be better than the original gamecube, right?

HxTn1Ns.jpg

Solution to the expensive hori controller?

I was looking for Pikmin 2, but that one is quite expensive in good condition...

Yeah, that one was a surprise to me. I liked it less than the first game, but it stayed in my collection all these years, and I never would have thought it would come to gain so much value.

I was actually eyeballing those controllers on eBay. I just got two WaveBirds, but I'm really wondering if this controller will do good as my 4th wireless controller.
