The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I never found it disappointing at the time, or a few years ago on replay. Still my memory's hazy, I might be a little off base here. But I'm thinking: you get plenty of chips to rotate through, and those should be your primary attacks against enemies with significant health (just like in the Battle Network games). As you go on you get stronger chips (like you mention), and I think you also get to upgrade your buster. As far as early difficulty... I find most MM games to be that way (due to boss weaknesses) and many action RPGs too (due to character starting off weak). I don't find it to be a problem, but rather it just makes you feel that much better once you get past it.
I haven't played any of the Battle Network RPGs, so I don't care about those. Judging Network Transmission as a Platformer, it's so badly flawed! I mean, basic enemies take like 20-30 shots (or something, I forget the exact number) with the normal gun. That is just unacceptable, when special weapons are extremely limited in quantity and you can't just use them all the time or you will quickly run out. It's ridiculously unfun to actually play because of the horrible enemy health level balance. It's also quite difficult early on; there are some parts early one with long stretches with very limited numbers of chips. It supposedly gets much easier once you get more chips, but that kind of difficulty "balance" is, as I said, completely backwards, and anyway, I stopped playing instead.

As for action-RPGs being like that, I don't think so... I mean, there are some maybe, but difficulty where the game is hard at first and then later gets easy isn't normal in any genre. Other Mega Man games definitely are nothing like it, except maybe for the MM Zero games, which are just stupidly difficult all around. And no other Mega Man games, even the hardest ones (Zero 1, X6, MM&B GBA...), have basic enemies that take anywhere near as many shots to kill as NT. What were they thinking?

Sure, Network Transmission isn't a terrible game, but it's disappointing and below average.

It's not as great as classic Mega Man or X. But I found it to be enjoyable, and definitely an interesting take on blending different sub-series.
It's one of the least fun 2d/2.5d Mega Man games I've played. I've heard that the Wonderswan game is pretty awful, and the WS Color game mediocre, but I haven't played those... of what I have, the worst are probably Mega Man Network Transmission, Mega Man II (Game Boy), and Mega Man X6. And that last one isn't nearly as bad as the other two.

Yeah, the comparisons I made were pretty sloppy I guess. MMZero series is probably the most apt though. They start out stupid difficult, but by the end of the game become fairly easy. It's weird, but it works. I enjoy all those games too, for whatever that's worth.

Unfortunately my disc went missing a few years back, so I can't comment super specifically. I did skip around an LP quickly though, and I'm not seeing what you're talking about. The primary weapon is very weak, yes. But chips, even at the start, seem plentiful enough. They almost all have several uses and generally kill normal enemies in a couple of hits. I don't remember ever running out much, and watching some one else play, that still seems to be the case. Do you remember what sections gave you trouble?

Personally I preferred NT over X6 and even the first GB game. I could see why someone might prefer more of a pure approach though.

I should fire up NT Warrior again but correct me if I'm wrong - Once you use up your chips I thought they just went back into your folder and had a random chance of coming back again? Even if they didn't, I don't remember ever reaching a point where the buster was the only option.

How is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles?

By yourself? It's alright. If you can get all the equipment for multiplayer plus three other people it's a blast.

until Seik's thread gets here: would this be what i want for an RGB modded N64 on XRGB mini? just checking before i go in on it, i wanted to wait till retro game accessories came back but she's on hiatus for a bit.

Isn't this the same guy from who papersleeves got his Saturn cable that fucked it up?

At this point I think I'll just do like him when I'll have a XRGB (One day...;_;), by this I mean buying all European and plug it via a converter.

If I could add 5 games to my collection it'd be DK:JB, WarioWorld, Pikmin1/2, and Luigi's Mansion...whatcha say to that GAF?

Anything else or something instead of the above listed??

My solid 10 GameCube games are RE4,Z:WW,Z:TP,Z:CE,Z:MQ,Z:FSA,MP1,
MP2:E, SM:SS, and RE:1 remake.

I picked up XIII at a car boot sale this morning for £2 this morning. GC games are stupidly rare compared to Xbox and PS2. Is the game any good?

I also got Wave Race for £3 from the same car boot sale a few weeks ago. Seller had JUST sold F-Zero GX for the same amount. Oh how I cursed.

Glad I bought some component cables for like 35 bucks on Nintendo's website around the time Twilight Princess came out for the Gamecube. Still pisses me off that game doesn't support 16:9 on the Gamecube. Nintendo got lazy.

less to do with lazy and more to do with the Wii version coming out, would have made the gc ver. the best hands down.

If your Gamecube has a modchip you can force 480p on certain games. It works with RE2 and RE3.

didn't know this, pretty interesting

yeah, i knew wii version was 16:9 and for some reason thought it'd work with the motion controls, learned my lesson quick that titles not built from the ground-up for wiimote play don't often go well, Metroid Prime Trilogy being the exception

There are definitely certain parts of that game that seem designed for Wiimote play. The shooting gallery in that town, and horseback archery are WAY easier with motion control.

yeah, it's all the other bits that just kinda threw me off...mind you, i dug most of (read: non underwater) parts of Skyward Sword

still eyeing this cheap freeloader for Doshin play, but now the SHMUP thread has me looking at Radirgy...japanese games'd work fine too, yeah? really like the style here

They should be fine, as far as I'm aware. You need a separate Memory Card for Japanese save files though, apparently they don't play nice together on the same memory card as saves from other regions.

ah, shit...thanks for the heads-up! just got a big-ass card, so i'll have to move some stuff around..ive got doshin on another but that save file is practically animal crossing size, it's crazy

I dunno, I've got a Lupin the 3rd GameCube save file on my big ol' 1019 memory card that I got on there by using my Action Replay as a Freeloader. Never really had a major problem with it, though the graphic (or maybe text?) for it looks glitched on the Memory Card menu, IIRC.... Reads/writes fine, though.

IIRC Devolution app for Wii (it requires you rip and verify once your own GC game discs to play on a BC Wii) forces widescreen on GC games. It even smoothens framerate for GC games cause it runs on Wii's hardware.

My inevitable quest to acquire all of the Gamecube Zeldas (including those promotional discs) is going to be...an expensive one :(

For now though, I'm getting some cheaper games out of the way. Freedom Fighters, Tony Hawk 3, 007: Nightfire, and a personal favorite - The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age are all on the way. I haven't played any of them for years, particularly curious to see how Tony Hawk holds up.

Yeah they are expensive. I have the Windwaker/Ocarina of Time Combo Disk that I got when I bought my GameCube back in 2003. They are going for $150+ now which is more than the Console package cost originally. Glad I held onto it!

..and with Mario Sunshine coming in from a fellow gaffer, that's it, my GC library is done.

unless someone fucks up & puts Cubivore on the cheap to try out sometime, which isn't likely with GC prices on the rise. Tried Baten Kaitos and couldn't really get into it, so there's that...oh yeah, still looking for impressions on Sonic Heroes!

Picked these up over eBay recently:

I've played all the Paper Mario's but this one.

That's a good feeling. :)
Out of curiosity, how many do you have?

hmm...i wanna say 30-40? ill put pics up when everything's arrived & i printed out proper covers for the cheap GS buys, feels pretty well rounded but im curious to see what others might say im missing, heh

again beyond cubivore, i debated RE 2/3 but hearing no real bonuses to speak of kinda didn't make it worth hunting for me, though i might bite if i saw proper bleemcast versions again

It's the best one.

i still havent played the original or finish SSS but this man ain't lyin

Is Kirby air ride worth picking up? Please note that it's pretty damn hard to find, at least in good condition. My local store has 2 copies but both look like they've been through a oven and a shredder. Is it worth paying $30 on ebay?

i was curious too, i still have games on the Kirby collection i've not played but heard good things on this one

I'm so jelly of all you people that have Ikaruga :(. I can't find that game ANYWHERE.

i just gave up & got a good copy for $25 on ebay, i had zero chance at finding it in gamestop at this point

It's not an amazing game, but it's a decent pick up. City Trial is the hidden gem of the series.

Just picked up the official component cables at a local retro game store yesterday. Hooked them up to my old crt but when I entered progressive scan mode the picture turn black and white and doubled. Is there a good 4:3 crt that supports progressive scan or do I need to to with an HD crt?

hello fellow gamers, first post on gaf here, and what better thread to post in than my favourite console thread?

I got these last year at the goodwill .99 cents each. sealed new in box.

That is like... the jackpot man, amazing find. Man I love looking at these cheap valuable finds, altough sometimes I wonder how people can think like even a dollar is almost to much for a sealed game lol

your in for a treat. PM:TTYD is one of my top 5 gamecube games

Mabey I'll post my gamecube collection later today, if I have the time

I remember getting a copy at Gamestop for $17 and a few months later seeing another one for $25. I guess they caught on and started raising the price lol.

DC port for life though :P

oh yeah, still looking for impressions on Sonic Heroes!

It's a cool idea with mediocre execution.

Stage design doesn't really take advantage of the potential for different paths and puzzles offered by having speed, flight and power characters with you at the same time and the levels tend to drag on too long, even repeating sections in some. You need to play through the same levels four times in easy, medium, hard and fetchquest varieties to unlock the true final boss and while it brings back the Sonic 2 style half pipe special stages it kinda fucks them up. Control is a little more twitchy than the Adventure games but it's still playable.

It's nothing great, but it's decent enough if you like the Adventure games.

Been rebuilding my collection that I sold off a few years ago. Got most of them back over the past couple of weeks. Some of these games are surprisingly expensive to buy now, especially if you want the black label versions (and who doesn't?). Thankfully I kept the actual system with the Metroid Jewel because I'll be damned if I could find another one of those.

Heh, I've got 2 I think! One from the system, and one that I won from Nintendo afterwards :D

Also hi! Haven't seen you round GAF.

I'm new here, finally decided to register after lurking for so long.

Yeah that comp is where I got mine, I don't remember what the contest involved though, probably something silly.

I always wanted a cool, unique center jewel for my system. Well, ever since I realized how easy it was to remove. Surprised they didn't make more than they did.

I remember CUBE magazine at one point came with fascia templates that you could slot an image into, and slot that into the GameCube. Tacky but also kinda cool at the time.
