That's what I saw, Hamelin was just trying to stay balanced and prevent himself from tumbling due to the Korean skater's fall.
:lol

Home cookin'. The Korean got robbed.

But then, in Korea, back in 2002, their soccer team robbed Spain of three goals and 'won' the game... so its karma, in a way. Still, the Korean dude got robbed tonight.

I'm American but not a stupid blowhard nationalist.

I thought Ohno was the best skater of them all coming into these Olympics and some of his qualifying runs showed how skilled he is but when it counts the most, he's not the best.

"Most decorated Winter Game Olympian" my ass, Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden won several golds.

I'd rather be them.
Nobody on TV was hyping Ohno to be hands down the best skater. They all said he was good and make it to the finals (which he did in every event). When your in the FINAL medal run its obviously a little bit different considering the best of the best are there.

That was a nice way of saying he doesn't deserve all the hype.

I can't wait for us to destroy Canada in hockey, take the gold, and rip their hearts out. It's not good for America if Canada is happy.

Ohno is old news, he needs to relax. Basketball is technically made by a Canadian regardless of what his citizenship became after the fact. Who cares what is the deciding factor for the best country. Just be happy with how your particular country is doing. As long as Canada beats their own personal records im more than happy :D

He did a pretty dam good job of making all the finals did he not? He passed both Hamelins for bronze even after they pushed him and knocked him out of first in the 1000.

Making the finals is not what it's about when you are one of the most talked about athletes in these games.

Some back the hype up.

See Shaun White.

See even Lindsey Vonn.

Don't see Apolo Antohn OhNo!!!!!

Pretty sure men's team pursuit is a guaranteed silver for Canada.

We are DEFINITELY tying our Turin total. We are in the final of men's pursuit, so we are at least assured of a silver. Add to that a men's hockey medal and a men's curling medal, and we will have 24 medals guaranteed, which would tie Turin's total. Canada has a good chance of beating their all-time total.

Did anyone watch bobsled today? So many crashes. Damn.

TV Masturbates to the fact that he was going to break the US medal record. Blame them for hyping it through the roof. You know how many specials NBC can concoct out of that?

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
My big thing with the medal count that gets me defensive is it seems illogical to say the "overall medal" winner is the country with the most of one kind of medal.

I can understand that different organizations might value one type of medal count over the other, but I just don't see how you can use the term "overall" and not count 2/3rds of the medals when making that determination. Note- I am NOT saying winning the overall medal count as I define it is better than winning the gold medal count- just that it doesn't seem right to call them the same thing.

Quality over quantity, baby.

Well, correct me if I am wrong but he was defending champion on the last race and he was fourth for most of it until he desperately tried to do the impossible.

Plus, the top Korean skater or one of them wasn't even in the final because he wiped himself out.

I'd say that's underachieving in something you have won before.

Again, I think both evaluations make sense from a certain perspective, but look at it this way:

If the whole thing were a tournament where each of the particular events were a qualifying round, the golds would be the ones to get into the final round. Of course, then the final event would be merely who can count the highest with gold discs, but...

What? Have you not been paying attention to NBC's specials?? When Ohno won the race in 2006 he had NEVER won the 500M previously. Not in a single world cup. I dont think he won the race in any world cups after either. The 500M is just so crazy that all sorts of things happen (Hint: Canadian got it handed to him by the Korean falling). He overachieved in 2006.

So we can agree that Joannie Rochette's performance had no quality.

All this talk about who's winning the olympics is dumb. You don't win the olympics. Your athletes go out and make your country proud. And you're free to take it however you please, whether they win or lose by .01 seconds, or overcome some great obstacle to make it to the end and say "I did this". They are there to inspire everyone watching, regardless of standings.

Anyway, when NBC breaks down the medals, they always point out who is in the lead of the total medals and who has the most gold. Tonight Costas, said how many the US had won and where that put us in our olympic history, and then said how Canada had the most golds, followed by Germany. You can recognize more than one country for their achievements without being a dick about it.

I tend to avoid anything with Bob Costas and Jay Leno on it.

He is heralded as ONE of the best skaters though and it's not just because he won Dancing with the Stars.

To say his Olympics was a success is something I can't agree with at all.

Plus, every race is batshit crazy in that sport.

what was our[canada] initial projections again? I remember hearing CTV project 1 or 2 golds and 10-15 medals total.

Canada was projected to be competing for top spot in the medal count. They messed up, but the last few days done really well.

I thought the gold vs. total medal count was stupid in the Beijing Olympics, and I think it's really stupid now. Personally, I'd rather see my country(Canada) have a great quantity of medals in various disciplines than fewer, but golder, medals... but it really doesn't matter... I'm really proud of how Canada's performed at these games (it's really nice having a lot of gold medals for once and our total medal tally is very solid), and I tip my hat to the US for performing brilliantly. 30+ medals is spectacular no matter how you slice it. No one wins the Olympics. You can only lose them by being bitter whiny assholes, so please kill yourselves or shut the fuck up.

Definitely within reach.

There's a big element of chance. I doubt anyone predicted Canada would have 10+ medals. So, some of our athletes have performed better than expected. Others have just missed the podium.

All you can do is try and fund these programs as best as possible. Your top 5 world-ranked athletes may not always perform as expected, but by building a solid program you remove ensure results in an acceptable range.

So, lets say a country has 33 medals, and they are ALL bronze; are they better than another nation that has 24 medals, but half are gold?

whose prediction? doing some googling.
CTV tv had 1-3
forbes and WSJ had 27 with 5 gold.
there's a CTV article on a 29-6 gold prediction
CNN has 29-10 gold.

so yea, seems we've exceeded [read doubled] alot of peoples projected gold medal count.

oh Canada, will you ever stop seeking approval from mother England?

Approval? England's been bitching about the games ever since it started. Apparently they wanted us to look bad to make their pathetic go at 2012 look better in comparison.

They didn't have the best olympics they could have, that's for sure. I'd say their showing was unfortunate, but to have enough programs and athletes a hair's breadth from gold is still impressive.

The other question is: would that 33 bronze country be better than Kazakhstan, who only has 1 silver? Fuck yes.

Definitely. It's hard to put numbers on the medals, but the color does matter to some extent.
Anyway, congrats to everyone who won a medal (whichever color it is).

Essentially, that country with all bronze medals, never won anything, they finished 2 places behind the winner the most.
That country does not exist.

But it really depends, do you dig range or gold? Do you dig both? How does it compare to your nation's previous record.

Did this other country win most of it's gold in penguin herding, staring contests, and rock paper shotgun?

Until the Olympic committee starts putting a point system to these medals, it's all up in the air. Although in my opinion a gold medal is worth at least 5 bronze. So yeah the other country is "better".
