I do honestly want to apologize if I've been a bit of a dick the last few days or so- obviously this is a really dumb topic to get worked up about. And I am honestly very happy for Canada and what they've done lately- games started out on a pretty rough note but the athletes have really been bringing it the 2nd week of competition.

The only thing that pissed me off was when in the last few days I posted updates of the "overall" medal count, about how the US was leading and Germany probably wasn't going to catch up, etc., there were literally 5 Canadian posts within a half hour correcting me and citing the IOC medal count history, and the BBC and Austrian TV's medal tables, etc.
I don't know about the rest of Canada-GAF, but I definitely think you're one of the more level-headed Americans. The only thing that annoys me are the constant conspiracy theories of "home cooking" or fixing because the Games are in Canada. The attacking of the Games in general, calling it the Glitch games etc, is pretty silly too.

Honestly this is single handedly the most annoying thing in this thread. All the Bullshit FUD that Canadians spread around how the US team is so much more well-funded than everyone else. US athletes only get a shit ton of money AFTER they become gold medalists. Were on the same level as all the rest of the athletes in terms in funding for the games if not worse off.
Yeah, I don't know why people kept defending the Canadian funding even when it was not entirely clear how much the USOC was spending.

See, what you don't seem to understand is that that's entirely not what we're talking about. The opportunities for private funding in Canada *for anything*, not just sports, are much more limited than in the US. That goes for first time athletes as well as gold medalists.

This is an issue that runs a lot deeper than this one olympiad or the olympics itself. It's an issue that goes right to the core of Canadian culture itself and has to do with risk aversion and unwillingness to fund things that are considered frivolous. Those stories in the WSJ? They don't really happen here on the same scale, pre or post medal. If they do, they're often supported by American money, not Canadian, and that tends to lead to a diaspora of Canadians. Look at all the Canadian coaches for other countries in these games, for example. Even in events where we haven't medaled well for decades.

It also has to do with the fact that we just have less money in our entire economy, so there's less to go around when there *is* private funding.

It's a complex issue that, imo, you know very little about and are all too willing to build strawmen up about.

REALLY.....

After all the Strawmen that Canadians are CONSTANTLY spouting off in this thread your going to accuse us of it? Considering how little Canadians know of US funding and yet you guys all act to be experts in it.

I was actually accusing you specifically of it. You've contributed rather heavily to the level of snark in this thread.

It's more than a little silly to deny that the american olympic team was the best off finacially going into these games. 7 of the top ten earners in these olympics are american, and you'd see the same trend looking at the top 100 as well I'm sure.

Im pretty sure the NHL players make more money than anyone at the olympics, but yea I guess your not counting them.

Why make this tread a shithole after two weeks of pleasant banter?

In the last 2 weeks the Americans were OK because they were the top dog, but since Canada jumped ahead of them in gold medal count last night, they got upset. Their ego is bruised

Honestly all I tried to do is enlighten everyone of the situation but I can see that people are still ignoring everything. Just like the Canadian situation is not clear the American situation is not clear either.

The "best off" American athletes are PAST gold medal winners. American corporations only fund known winners. Its a completely different situation for the rest of the athletes.

Yu-na Kim begs to differ.

Any NHL player in the Olympic made more than $8-million dollars last year? because that's what she made

Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin all make over 8 million a season. And other players too, if we're talking about yearly salaries.

he's strictly talking about endorsement deals, which i imagine would push the above far higher than Yu-Na.

Bode has been wanting to go home for like five days. I didn't know this but Aksel Svindal is already back in Norway.

Bode is cool, but Ligety has been a pretty big disappointment IMO.

It's sort of nice, they'll both end up with a gold, a silver and a bronze each from this olympics.

can Morrison medal in snowboard slalom today?

All three have a (slim?) chance.

Anderson won a gold in the World Championship last year.
Morrison won bronze in the same event.
Lambert won his first world cup in January.

They showed like 5 different angles on it on CTV and one of the angles pretty clearly showed the stick was below the crossbar by the time it touched the puck.

Anyone got a video of the first Canada goal against the slovaks yesterday? Dunno , but it appears to me marleau's goal was an illegal high stick.

EDIT:

http://www.fanshots.com/video/491/Canada-vs-Slovakia-Patricks-Controversial-1st-GOAL-Video
It doesn't matter how high the stick is when the shot is taken, as long as it's below the crossbar when it makes contact with the puck. On the replay, by the time he touches the puck the stick is well below the crossbar, just a bit above his waist.

Just over half an hour until the mens team pursuit finals. If its HALF as fun as the short track stuff was last night, we're in for a few pages of hilarity.

What about bobsled? And really upset them in hockey? We've beaten them once.
We'd be pretty upset if you beat us in hockey tbqh.

Or you could, you know, cheer? For the silver they earned, and maybe even - sportingly - for the team that beat them?

I prefer neptunes' explanation, it gives me more faith in humanity :)
People leave events a little early to beat the rush to the bus and skytrain. It happens in hockey games all the time even if we're winning. You don't want to be fighting thousands of people to get out of the venue area. Not to mention the Canada vs Slovakia game! As soon as we lost I turned off the TV and booked it out of my house :lol

My god I love those speed skating spandex outfits. If this was the only even I would be more than happy to watch two weeks of it. Anyone know where to get high quality pictures of the speed skaters?

Brutally intense in the 30km... two in the lead... two in the pursuit group. Mindgames will follow before the finishing sprint.

Reading the last few pages tells me the Canadians must really hate the summer Olympics.

Nope, I love em. There arent nearly as fun as the winter games for Canadian medal purposes, obviously, but I still get caught up in watching sports Id never watch otherwise, much like the winter games. I vividly recall watching Donovan Bailey win gold in Atlanta.

Clara Hughs probably bitchslapped our entire women speed skating team pursuit team for losing to the US. She did not look happy sitting on the spectator stands watching this speed skating so far.
