See, what you don't seem to understand is that that's entirely not what we're talking about. The opportunities for private funding in Canada *for anything*, not just sports, are much more limited than in the US. That goes for first time athletes as well as gold medalists.
This is an issue that runs a lot deeper than this one olympiad or the olympics itself. It's an issue that goes right to the core of Canadian culture itself and has to do with risk aversion and unwillingness to fund things that are considered frivolous. Those stories in the WSJ? They don't really happen here on the same scale, pre or post medal. If they do, they're often supported by American money, not Canadian, and that tends to lead to a diaspora of Canadians. Look at all the Canadian coaches for other countries in these games, for example. Even in events where we haven't medaled well for decades.
It also has to do with the fact that we just have less money in our entire economy, so there's less to go around when there *is* private funding.
It's a complex issue that, imo, you know very little about and are all too willing to build strawmen up about.
