That was alright, I guess.

Sorta better than an average episode of Smallville.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. This was far better than the average episode Smallville.

That was decent. Nothing more really. Better production values than your average Smallville episode, and more characters/superheroes, but in the end, it was still Smallville. Lots of fine cheddar in this episode.

This is like Tom Welling's 3rd or 4th episode directing though, and he does seem to have some talent there.

Tess has a million different allegiances it seems.

That was pretty good though. Just wish the villain was better.

Yeah. Just another SV episode.

Welling directs episodes? News to me.

Yep. Hes done one a season for like the past 3 seasons, plus this one. And each one Ive felt was well directed, especially given the resources the show is working on. I think he has a second career lined up when Smallville ends. Probably suits him better since hes a pretty private guy.

I recognize that cape CG shot from a few seasons ago. :lol

Fate's costume definitely doesn't suck. Stargirl looks 100% faithful too.

They've done that "reuse old footage" before thing. That cape thing was from all the way back in season 3 I believe. A kid who could see someone's death touched Clark and instead of a death, that's what he saw. Nice callback.

Loved Fate's costume. It actually was the most movie-quality one they had. The others were good too, especially considering the budget.

Where is all this footage coming from :lol :lol :lol ?

That was the only part that had me WTFing. :lol

Except for the shouldhavebeenCGI wings.

FUCK YES. I loved it. This is coming from a Marvel > DC guy who doesn't know as much as he should about the JSA. Now I want to get some back issues.

Though I disagree about the CGI wings simply because they would have looked overly CGI.

Spike Spiegel said:
Definitely not.

SPOILERS

Haha, I literally yelled out "YES!!" and my mom was like "I take it that's what he looks like in the comics?" :lol

DoctorWho said:
Courtney's suggestions on how to fix up the Watchtower were good.

Definitely. I don't expect it to happen much with Johns not writing every episode but I'm hoping as the show goes on, and hopefully in season 10, we start to see the JLA become more of a "family".

There's a lot of potential to be had there.

DoctorWho said:
They try to avoid using it for the most part but that is his Green Arrow voice. Still better than Bale's Batman.

Yeah, though at first it felt like Hawkman was channeling his inner Bale. :lol It fit though. Actually I think the way Ollie does his voice is the most logical way to have a "realistic" look at super heroes hiding their voice.

Spike Spiegel said:
Courtney takes some shots at the Justice League, and the back and forth between Ollie and Carter is just too much. :lol

EDIT: Fate says Luthor is still alive.

Haha yes. Loved the Ollie/Carter stuff. I want a sitcom spinoff.

The JLA isn't a family and doesn't act like one. The League is just an elite task force. That's one of the core differences between the groups.

that was soooooo great. the fight scenes were pretty amazing for smallville.

and DR FATE AND MARTIAN MANHUNTER!!

oh my god both of them looked tooo good. loved to see the real martian in form! Too bad we didn't appearances of bart and cyborg, hopefully we'll see more of them soon (maybe during the "apokolips"?).

Oh and the nod about lex luthor being alive, hopefully they start looking into that angle for the finale season. Checkmate stuff with waller was pretty cool as well, i have a feeling we'll see luthor's name behind that organization.

:lol :lol @ when his mouth closes. I want a gif of just that.

By the way, this episode has the makings of an obvious sequel in season 10 where we get to see other members of the team. Lantern, Flash, etc.

i was sad we didnt get to see green lantern in the flesh after being hinted at in the trailers so much. but that final fight scene was pretty damn impressive for smallville. sure it was short, but it was badass. doesnt happen very often.

and im a comic noob, can someone explain the Checkmate group and its members? is "Agent Mercer" from the books?

Tess' character was created specifically for the show but there's a lot to learn about Checkmate and Suicide Squad:

Loved the MM getting his powers back.

And that bit at the end, damn that bad guy got owned quick, especailly when all 4 attacked him at once :lol

Great episode. :D

I wonder how the ratings were, and whether they'll be discouraged if the ratings were bad.

Ratings were good!

TV By the Numbers said:
The first hour of “Absolute Justice” averaged a 1.1 with adults 18-49 and 2.6 million viewers, with the second hour averaging a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating and nearly 3 million viewers (2.94). It was Smallville’s best numbers of the season with viewers and adults 18-49, and its best Friday since the last Friday Night Smackdown! aired on the CW in September 2008.

The CW said:
A 2-hr SMALLVILLE provided The CW with our best Friday night since Sept 2008 in all key categories, including adults 18-49 (1.2/4), men 18-49 (1.5/5), adults 18-34 (1.1/4), men 18-34 (1.3/5) and total viewers (2.8mil).

In terms of Smallville episodes, this is the highest rated Smallville of the season in total viewers, adults 18-49 (tie) and men 18-49.

Competitively, Smallville ranked #1 from 8-10pm in men 18-49.”

Last week, it beat the Dollhouse finale too.

I really liked this episode but one thing that bugged me is that Clark did almost nothing. The only power he used was his heat vision. He could have ended everything instantly if he ran around and caught the ice dude right away.

Yeah that's more of a problem with the character of Superman.

rewatched the end fight scene, and thats damn impressive for Smallville imo. Never have I seen so many flashing lights at once! and then the Martian part?? thanks for the budget increase CW

Just watched it on DVR. Great episode.

I watch Smallville regularly and this "movie" didn't disappoint. I'm not an avid follower of the comics and whatnot but like others here have said, Dr. Fate looked really good. Hawkman was OK except the helmet.

The writing was very tight and polished and the feel was pretty good.

I was laughing @ the villian because it was the same kid that played Young Bison in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chin Li.

I agree that Pam Grier looked awful.

How do they get the AGES of the viewers? o_O

Nielsen ratings. The industry only uses the households that have Nielsen boxes, which are registered to know who watches it. If you don't have a Nielsen box, they don't actually know if you watched it or not.

My thoughts on this episode.

It was better than average Smallville for sure, but not by much. I was more impressed with Legion than this episode, maybe cuz I had too much hype.

Maybe because I watched "The Watchmen" a few months ago, it felt like I was watching Smallville's version of The Watchmen, with an old superhero team... with entity with future abilities and gruffy voice, and a bird guy. Dr Fate was the Dr Manhatten of this group (and by no coincidence the coolest of these new guys).

The villain Icicle guy was terrible for first few appearances, he got better towards the end. WTF is with Jackie Brown showing up and working with Tess?

Checkmate... Suicide Squad... Apokolips?

Serious comic reference name dropping than usual. I hope they do follow through...

People that don't follow these comics and DC universe must be scratching their brains or wondering what was so good... like I was... it had less impact on me overall as I am not big in comics, but I can respect what they were trying to pull off.

Hawkman was f'n ridiculous... when he's out of his costume, the actor is alright, but oh man that mask is :lol with Batman gruff voice to boot.

And hells yeah for giving Martian Manhunter his powers back!

Great episode.

some small quirks:

-At first I was a little disappointed with the Nabu helmet, being golden (looking more plastic than polished gold) but then that would make too much a contrast with the gloves and cape used. But the whisperings were a really nice touch.

-Hawkman wings were too small.

-The villain was meh at first (meteor freak-of-the-week flashbacks),
although the Checkmate thing made that he´s a little more than just an angst teen type, what explains how he was defeating experienced heroes.

And I´d recomend reading the Golden Age. The part of the government "hunting" heroes is explored there.

And to think that this show revolved over Clark fucking crying "Lana" weeks after weeks after weeks.

Medalion said:
Yeah that was a good one.

Also I literally LOLed when they flashed Windows 7 on screen... product placement as usual.
And don´t know what is worse. When they live in a world where mice are nowhere to be seen (just type, type, type for everything) or where a highly übber advanced surveillance system runs on Windows (or MacOS, or any other real OS).
Always a LOL worth moment.

A lot of care was taken I can tell to get Dr.Fate just right. From the neck up, he's badass which is probably why there was so many close ups of the helmet and his glowing eyes. The costume still looks bad from the cape and suit, but it's what you would expect from a budget series like this.

Hawkman.. I dunno, is corny as fuck even if they had the most badass costume, guys that base themselves off birds and are not Angels I don't particularly buy. Not too fond of Stargirl either.

I still like League's appearance overall better, it was simple and didn't try to overreach as much... and Persuader was too cool.

I agree with you. In the end, great script or not, it must fit a limited budget. Lucky for us it was a great episode. :D
Another point where the budget gets in the way is the guest stars appearances.

p.s. The funny thing is that the coolest costume effect (Dr. Fate glowing eyes) probably was the cheapest to do (just some leds and battery).

I just finished watching and all I can say is...

Loved the whole thing, but I'm kind of easy to please. :D

Not long before MM got his powers back, I was thinking to myself that it sure would be nice if he could get his powers back.

I enjoyed seeing Waller brought in and I was like "Pam Grier! WHOO!"

And did anyone burst out laughing when Stargirl was talking to Hawkman about Icicle and Nelson said, "Jack Frost nippin' out our toes!" :lol

good tv movie. im glad it pretty much lived up to my expectations. it was kinda funny they used the floating cape in space again i had forgotten about that. everyone even got about a decent amount of time, maybe too much chloe and not enough clark but thats normal.

Budget........

If Fate can be done with a limited budget imagine they did a JLA movie...
