Jason's Ultimatum
Member
Good day, ladies and gentleman. Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are back for another go at the titular character, Jason Bourne. Unfortunately, there's no title yet for film, so if someone wants to make a mock title picture, I'll gladly post it in this OP.
ALL NEWS, PICTURES, VIDEOS, INTERVIEWS, ETC GOES IN THIS THREAD.
What I'm going to do is give a timeline of Bourne4/5 news that follows in the form of Q&A. So let's begin:
Q: When was a sequel to Bourne 4 announced?
A: On February 22, 2008, Variety reported that a sequel to Bourne Ultimatum was in the works, and that both Damon and Greengrass were on board.
Q: Great, so Damon and Greengrass were back. Was Tony Gilroy back to pen the script?
A: No, Gilroy submitted one draft for Ultimatum and left, and the studio seemed to like it, but Damon and Greengrass didn't like Girloy's draft at all. In fact, Damon was pretty pissed. On October 16, 2008, it was announced that George Nolfi, who co-wrote Bourne Ultimatum, would pen the script.
Q: Why was Damon pissed at Gilroy?
A: As mentioned, the script was supposedly awful; a career ender if Gilroy's Ultimatum script was put up on Ebay. Damon later apologized. In Gilroy's defense, he was asked to submit a script, take his money, and go work on Michael Clayton. Gilroy didn't want to work with Greengrass again after what happened to his Supremacy script.
Q: Were Julia Stiles and Joan Allen set to return, too?
A: Yes
Q: I read Josh Zetumer was hired to write a 'parallel' script. What does that mean?
A: It means that Zetumer's script was going to be combined with Nolfi's script.
Q: So what happened?
A: By August, 2009, Nofli was set to direct The Adjustment Bureau, with Matt Damon starring. Though word has it Greengrass was pissed that another writer was brought on board without anyone notifying him, so he bowed out of the film. Greengrass's statement was that he felt he did all that he could with Jason Bourne, and that it was time to move onto other projects.
Q: So Greengrass was out. Does that mean Damon was out, too?
A: Yes, Damon and Greengrass are close friends, and Damon has re-iterated time and time again that he wouldn't do another Bourne film unless Greengrass was to direct. On February 1, 2010, Damon said another Bourne film was at least 5 years away, and that he's waiting for the right script to come along.
Q:Why not bring Doug Liman, the director of Bourne Identity back?
A: Universal banned Liman from directing another Bourne film. It's a known fact that Liman is very difficult to work with, and Universal didn't play any of his games. There were huge fights on set during the filming of Identity.
Q:Great, so no Damon and no Greengrass. What's next for the franchise?
A: In June, 2010, it was announced that Tony Gilroy was write a script for The Bourne Legacy. That October, it was announced Gilroy would also direct the Bourne Legacy, and that Matt Damon wouldn't return. The film would be released on August, 2012.
Q: If Jason Bourne wasn't in the film, then why bother?
A: Bourne Legacy was a sequel that was concurrent with Ultimatum, and that it featured a new government spy program. Jeremy Renner played Aaron Cross, a super spy enhanced on pills, or CHEMS! Cross needs to viral off to make his enhancements permanant, or he becomes stupid, thus making it easier for the government to track and kill him.
Q: So how did the film do?
A: Bourne legacy was met with mixed reactions. As for the box office numbers, it did around the same as Identity.
Q: So the ending to Bourne Legacy was a bit anticlimatic. Was Aaron Cross's story over with?
A: No, Universal planned for a sequel to Legacy, and in October, 2013, it was announced Justin Lin would direct Bourne 5, and Andrew Baldwin would pen the script. The released date was set for July, 2016.
Q: But I read rumors that Damon and Greengrass were back to do another Bourne film?
A: Well, in September, 2014, it was announced Damon and Greengrass were back for another Jason Bourne Film, with Justin Lin and Jeremy Renner's Bourne Legacy sequel pushed back to a later date.
Q: Thank Christ! So Damon and Greengrass finally found an idea for where Bourne could go next?
A: Yup! Throughout the years, Damon and Greengrass would keep talking about making another Bourne. Damon even went to Jonanthan Nolan, Christopher Nolan's brother, to take a crack. Jon Nolan couldn't think of an idea.
Q: So who's writing the script?
A: It has been said Greengrass and his longtime editor, Christopher Rouse, came up with a 'strong' concept for where Bourne goes next, and that Damon would help with the writing, too. I mean, why not with the trio? Damon won an Oscar for best screenplay, Greengrass is a great writer that not many people know about, and Rouse has been on franchise since Identity.
Q: Any plot details yet?
A: Not much is known, except that Damon and Greengrass were inspired by Snowden, and the film takes place throughout an austerity-riddled Europe. The film starts in Greece, and ends in Las Vegas. That's it.
Q: Who's returning to the film besides Matt Damon?
A: Julie Stiles is the only actress to be back. Alicia Vikander was announced in May, 2015 to star alongside Matt Damon. In July, 2015 Tommy Lee Jones was announced to play a superior CIA officer, and in September, 2015, Vincent Cassel was announced to play the assassin on the hunt for Bourne.
Q:When does the film start shooting?
A: The film started filming this week. Frank Marshall tweeted the first pic:
Q: What about the amazing film composer, John Powell? Is he back?
A: As of this time, he's not confirmed to be back, but hopefully he will. He did an amazing job on setting the tone of the films.
The Bourne Enemy is a rumor floating around the web. Supposedly it was listed on some site listing the movies coming out in 2016. Cant' find a link, though.
Film will be released on July 29th, 2016.
